Malcolm McDowell and Simon Baker in The Mentalist (2008)

Trivia

Red Sails in the Sunset

The Mentalist

Edit
The reason the camera pays so much attention to the boy sitting at the counter at the truck stop is because he is Simon Baker's son Claude, and because Simon was the director of this episode.
When Jane parks his car and stops the Citreon it can be seen "settling down". This is because the car used a unique self-leveling suspension that was designed to provide a smother ride. This feature, which moved the bumpers off the regulation height, caused the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to ban the car from sale in the United States. This probably explains why Jane's car is always seen with a 1970s era license plate.
The favor Bret Stiles repays to Jane is owed to Jane for the help Stiles received from Jane in the prior season's episode, "His Thoughts Were Red Thoughts."
The 1935 song "Red Sails in the Sunset", which gives this episode its title, plays on the radio while Lorelei dyes her hair.
Gigi Rice the actress who plays Lorelei's mother Dana Martins is only 10 years older than Emmanuelle Chriqui who plays her daughter Lorelei.
