As the creator of Hellboy and artist of the half-demon hero's many adventures into darkness, Mike Mignola is comics' foremost expert on monsters. Hellboy is an agent of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) and has vanquished every type of monster under the full moon, from vampires to werewolves to dragons to his demonic kin. "Hellboy" comics range from simple short stories to pulp epics as good as any blockbuster movie; you don't get the modern reinvention of "Creature Commandos" without the B.P.R.D.
But what is Mignola's own favorite monster movie? Despite also being the creator of Hellboy's amphibian sidekick Abe Sapien, it's not "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" and its underwater horror Gill-man.
It's James Whale's "Bride of Frankenstein" and Mignola isn't alone; "Bride" often ranks as the best...

Dublin-based post-production house Windmill Lane Pictures is to close with immediate effect, citing the impact of the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strike in the US and the “erosion of competitiveness” of Ireland’s VFX tax credit.

In 1990, the recording studio and post-production house was divided and the recording studios, used by artists including U2, remains in operation.

Some of the most exciting TV shows of all time are horror series, using spooks and scares to churn out some dangerously cutting-edge entertainment. Many TV shows take advantage of the longer-form storytelling of the medium to dish out some delightful slow-burn horror stories that wouldn't be possible to squeeze into a 120-minute feature film. However, many scary series take a more noticeable charge of their narratives, getting to the point quickly with some exciting tales that don't overstay their welcome.
There are several methods by which TV shows find good, fast paces to deliver their horror at. Anthology horror series have to wrap up each of their narratives within the space of a single episode, typically leading to more brisk scares that get to the action quickly. Monster-of-the-week shows have similar mechanisms in place, with neat bottled stories delivered alongside an overarching plot that spans multiple episodes. Whatever the case,...

With production on DC Studios' Lanterns HBO/Max series set to commence very soon, we may have our first glimpse of the look star Kyle Chandler will be rocking as veteran ring-slinger, Hal Jordan.
The Friday Night Lights alum posed for a photo with a fan that was shared on social media, and, as we expected, it looks like Chandler's take on Jordan will be inspired by the Earth One version of the character from Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko's 2018 series.
Of course, there's always a chance Chandler will completely change his appearance prior to filming, but since the actor doesn't usually wear a full beard between roles, we'd day there's a good chance this is indeed his Hal Jordan look.
Chandler will star alongside Aaron Pierre, who will play John Stewart in the show.

Just from watching the trailer, I sat down to watch Werewolves with some low expectations. What intrigued me was the look of the werewolves. They look more practical than they do in movies these days, like they're animatronic beasts right out of an '80s movie. I like that a lot.
Werewolves is reminiscent of films like The Howling and Wolfen, with the same level of cheesiness and plot holes. It’s also fun. The lycanthropes are not as spectacular as the ones in 2010’s The Wolfman featuring Anthony Hopkins and Benecio Del Toro, or Josh Harnett’s werewolf in the Penny Dreadful TV series. These creatures were as I expected with their growling, rivers of drool, and massive teeth. We get occasional information about who they once were thanks to personal items such as dog tags and a protective vest with the words ‘wolf killer’ on it. The action...

Judging by atmosphere alone, Nosferatu is a triumph. Writer-director Robert Eggers has applied his meticulous process to the sighing ossuaries and sickly maidens of gothic horror, adapting Bram Stoker’s seminal Dracula and its illegitimate offspring Nosferatu for contemporary audiences. It's not always clear why one fantasy TV show is popular while another one fails to capture the attention of audiences. However, the most popular additions to the genre in recent years have all been crossover hits that connect with viewers who would typically tune into speculative fiction, as well as a variety of other audiences. These new viewers found themselves drawn into the intricate world-building and storytelling of these projects. Since fantasy has been gaining traction with wider audiences, it's high time that overlooked and forgotten series are brought back to the forefront of the conversation.
While there are some fantasy TV shows that continued for too many seasons, these overlooked series were typically cut short. However, even those who had years of success haven't enjoyed the same legacy as the fantastical projects that will be remembered for years to come. There are many reasons why these shows have been largely forgotten,...

The Amateur star Rami Malek and director James Hawes explain how the upcoming espionage thriller pulls from Slow Horses, which the latter directed episodes for. Based on a 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Littell, The Amateur follows a CIA cryptographer who, after losing his wife in a London terrorist attack, blackmails his agency into training him and letting him pursue the people responsible. The film will mark the latest espionage-themed project for Hawes, who directed all six season 1 episodes of Slow Horses, Apple TV+'s acclaimed spy show.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, both Malek and Hawes explain how The Amateur draws from the spy movies that have come before, while also putting a very modern spin on its subject matter. Though the Jason Bourne films and classics like Three Days of the Condor (1975) are inspirations, Hawes affirms that it's also a "a very 2025 movie." Check...

The French actress and model started her career in theater before making her film debut in 2003 in Bernardo Bertolucci's controversial "The Dreamers".
She achieved international recognition when she appeared in Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" (2005) and portrayed 'Vesper Lynd' in the 'James Bond' film "Casino Royale" (2006).

As HBO's Lanterns series continues to round out its supporting cast, the latest addition is an actor who has played numerous memorable roles over the years, Garret Dillahunt.
According to Deadline, Dillahunt will play a villain, but his character doesn't appear to be anyone we might know from the comics.
Described as a "modern cowboy," William Macon is a "a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who masks his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated facade."
Dillahunt has a lot of experience playing villains, with appearances in the likes of The Last House on the Left, Looper, and HBO's Deadwood, in which he played two completely different characters (really three if you count his cameo in the movie).
Dillahunt joins the recently cast Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) as Hal Jordan.

Over the years, Netflix has boasted an extensive catalog of horror movies and shows, yet even six years later, The Haunting of Hill House still stands out as the platform's best horror series. Netflix always has a strong mix of genres in its repertoire, but horror is one place that is never lacking. Warning: This article contains Spoilers for The Rings of Power season 2, episode 4, "Eldest."
The Rings of Power season 2, episode 4 introduces Tom Bombadil, and viewers may recognize the actor who brings this iconic figure from J.R.R. Tolkien's books to life. The Hobbits have a run-in with Tom Bombadil in The Fellowship of the Ring, but the character doesn't appear in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the book. Tolkien also writes about Bombadil in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, which sheds light on this mysterious and powerful figure though it also leaves plenty up to interpretation. This is precisely why bringing him to the screen can be so risky.
Thankfully, The Rings of Power is doing a decent job of it so far. The Rings of Power season 2, episode 4 introduces Tom Bombadil after the Stranger is separated from Nori and Poppy, and he helps Daniel Weyman's character out of a pinch.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is back for Season 2, and this time around there are a number of new characters to keep straight. With Sauron revealed to be Halbrand at the end of Season 1, the chess pieces are now fully in the open and the Dark Lord is masquerading as yet another new character this season in order to try and forge the titular rings. We’ve also got drama with the dwarves, in-fighting amongst the elves and that guy who most definitely is Gandalf is wandering the desert with a harfoot.
Absent in Season 2 is Nazanin Boniadi who played Bronwyn, who exited the show. But new to the cast are Ciaran Hinds, Rory Kinnear and plenty more filling out this prequel series that tackles J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age. Check out our complete “Rings of Power” Season 2 cast and character guide below.

Tom Bombadil is the most enduring mystery from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. A jolly forest dweller, Frodo and his Hobbit friends first encounter Tom near the start of The Fellowship of the Ring, just after they leave the Shire. Tom apparently possesses great powers, but he's not at all involved in the wider goings-on in Middle-earth. This immortal being just likes to hang out in the forest singing songs and spending time with his wife Goldberry.
The section with Tom Bombadil is kind of its own little isolated piece of the story, and most adaptations of The Lord of the Rings leave it out. However, Tom will appear in the upcoming second season of The Rings of Power, Prime Video's Lord of the Rings prequel series set thousands of years before the story most of us know. Josh Hartnett has had a diverse career in horror, from protagonist to villain, in films like Penny Dreadful and 30 Days of Night. His work in horror anthologies like Stories of Lost Souls has been hit or miss, with weak appearances and disconnected narratives. Despite some missteps in films like The Black Dahlia, Hartnett's performances in horror like I Come with the Rain and Black Mirror have been strong.
Josh Hartnett is a character actor that's slowly made a name for himself in the horror genre, appearing in a wide variety of movies and TV shows of uneven quality. Perhaps most famous for his role as Michael Fitzgerald on ABC's Cracker, Josh Hartnett is a teen idol turned character actor who has shown up in a diverse array of media. M. Night Shyamalan said he couldn’t see anyone else but Josh Hartnett as lead character Cooper in his new thriller, “Trap,” noting that he loved that the “Penny Dreadful” star was willing to “risk everything” with him to make the movie.
The “Sixth Sense” director began self-financing his own films with 2015’s “The Visit,” a gamble that paid off on the very first day of release.
“There’s no way to protect yourself. We’ll all get paid if we’re successful, if we’re not, we don’t get paid. And I don’t think you should,” he told GQ in a video where he talked about his most iconic movies.
He said he wrote the role of Cooper as a “superstar,” but needed an actor who was alright with making a movie that didn’t have a studio’s backing upfront.

Hartnett's performance as Cooper in Trap is praised, showcasing his evolution from heartthrob to versatile actor in the horror genre. With more than 30 film roles, Hartnett's iconic career includes a significant role in Oppenheimer and a return to horror in Trap. Fans of Hartnett's Trap performance should revisit his first horror role in Halloween H20 to see where his career began.
Josh Hartnett's first horror role should be revisited after his performance in the 2024 film Trap. In the M. Night Shyamalan film, Hartnett plays Cooper Adams, a serial killer who is stuck in a maximum-security concert venue. Alongside other familiar faces, Hartnett leads the cast of Trap, with the film focusing mainly on the psyche of a trapped killer. Reviews of Trap praise Hartnett's performance, despite the occasionally muddied storytelling.
Before his work in Trap, Hartnett had a long history of acting in horror and thriller films and the occasional drama.

Amidst the fanfare and spectacle in Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” presentation in Hall H today, the biggest question on fans’ minds may be about one of the most loved, yet least seen characters in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, Tom Bombadil.
During a jam-packed panel presentation featuring the cast and showrunners, fans were treated to details about the upcoming season as well as an epic trailer that teased huge battles, Ents, Sauron’s rise, a Balrog, and the aforementioned woodland hermit. English actor Rory Kinnear will play Bombadil, a sort of merry trickster encountered by Frodo Baggins in the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, "The Fellowship of the Ring." Season 2 marks the character’s long-awaited live action screen debut. Fans of the books were chagrined that Peter Jackson omitted the character from his films.
Kinnear is best known for playing M’s chief of staff in the Daniel Craig-era James Bond films, several characters in Alex Garland’s ‘Men,’ and as the Creature in “Penny Dreadful.”

Dark fantasy genre offers a gritty and twisted take on traditional hero stories with morally complex characters and dark themes. Popular series like Game of Thrones and Supernatural set high standards for high fantasy with dark undertones. Underrated gems like The Magicians, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Penny Dreadful offer a darker and more macabre take on dark fantasy.
Live-action dark fantasy is a rapidly expanding genre with many phenomenal TV shows that offer excitement and thrills. The story of good versus evil has a perennial quality that appeals to optimism and justice. However, in a world thats increasingly chaotic and filled with hate, these stories have begun to feel disingenuous. This has led many people to seek out stories that provide a degree of escapism while also reflecting reality. Dark fantasy is the perfect solution.

Josh Hartnett's modern comeback includes Black Mirror, Oppenheimer, and The Bear. His upcoming film, Trap, is expected to be profitable regardless of its Rotten Tomatoes score. Hartnett may reprise his role in The Bear season 4 and star in more summer blockbusters.
I'm thrilled about how Josh Hartnett has returned to the spotlight over the past few years. Hartnett's well-received and celebrated comeback began in 2023 when he starred alongside Aaron Paul in one of the most celebrated episodes of Black Mirror season 6 titled "Beyond the Sea". Hartnett starred as David Ross in the Black Mirror episode, which takes place in an alternate version of 1969. House of the Dragon‘s world gets even bigger in season 2. With the Dance of the Dragons Targaryen civil war now in motion, the “Blacks” (Queen Rhaenyra I’s supporters) and the “Greens” (King Aegon II’s supporters) must enlist the other Great Houses of Westeros to their cause.
This means that many of the characters we’ve gotten to know thus far, Prince Jacaerys (Harry Collett), Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), Ser Criston (Fabian Frankel), and more, will hit the road to recruit nobles like college football coaches in need of a star quarterback.
“People have to curry favor with the other lords and figure out who’s on what team,” House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal told Den of Geek. “It’s nice because instead of just introducing 18 new characters, we follow characters who we already know going to these new places and meeting new people.”
Condal is exaggerating a bit.

Tom Bombadil will finally appear in The Rings of Power season 2, showcasing his signature singing and whimsical nature. Rory Kinnear will play Old Tom in the series, but the character must sing, or it wasn't worth including him. Bombadil's singing adds a point of light to the dark tone of the show, providing a refreshing contrast to Sauron's evil presence.
Tom Bombadil will officially be making an appearance in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2, and I can't wait to finally hear him sing. This will be the first time the jovial, sing-song character will be brought to a live-action adaptation of Tolkien's works since he was left out of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Of course, Bombadil is frequently omitted for a good reasonhe has little to do with the central plot, and his nature contradicts the darker tones of Sauron's conflict.

A playwright-turned-screenwriter, John Logan made a name for himself — and earned three Oscar nominations — working with some of the biggest names in the business, in genres ranging period dramas, sword-and-sandal epics and spy thrillers.
His credits include Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, Ed Zwick and Tom Cruise’s The Last Samurai, and two James Bond movies directed by Sam Mendes, to name a few.
Logan was, in his own words, shaped by two early influences: William Shakespeare and monsters. The Great Bard led him to drama, theatre, and a career in writing. He was raised on the fantastical world of Dark Shadows, the horror movies of Universal and Hammer, Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, the Aurora monster modeling kits, and Marvel’s Tomb of Dracula comic books. After being excluded from both the classic 1978 animated movie and Peter Jackson's critically acclaimed trilogy, The Lord of the Rings will finally put the spotlight on Tom Bombadil in live-action when The Rings of Power returns for season 2 on August 29.
He first appeared in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, helping save Merry and Pippin from Old Man Willow, an angry tree in the Old Forest, that swallows them. In this series, we'll meet a younger version of "Old Tom" who has left Withywindle behind to make a second home in the ravaged Rhûn.
"There’s a reason why he hasn’t been in prior adaptations, because in some ways he’s sort of an anti-dramatic character," showrunner J.D. Payne tells Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com). "He’s not a character who has a particularly strong agenda. He observes drama, but largely doesn’t participate in it.

This season finally focuses on the romance between Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton) which isn’t an easy road because there’s someone else in the mix, Lord Debling (Sam Phillips). Other storylines include Francesca Bridgerton’s (Hannah Dodd) introduction into society which she doesn’t take too well.
A longtime series writer, Jess Brownell, steps into season three’s showrunner shoes and brings back a mix of old favorite characters into a greater spotlight and new characters to come in and shake up society. Here’s all the actors who are main players and who they’ll be playing in season 3.

When Showtime premiered Penny Dreadful a decade ago, we altogether expected a grand monster mash-up. And certainly, series creator John Logan delivered just that over the course of the three seasons that followed. But he also gave viewers something that we couldn’t possibly have anticipated: a horror drama of uncommon depth and crushing beauty. It is for that reason that all these years later, we still can’t help but hope he’ll reconsider his decision to end the show after just 27 episodes with the death of Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives. (Read TVLine’s 2016 interview with Logan here.

We’re just two weeks away from the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and this morning the august French institution revealed who will determine the winners of this year’s awards. A cross-section of international talent will join “Barbie” and “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig, who will lead the panel, in an effort to undoubtedly compare apples to oranges and try to make sense of a diverse slate of films from directors like David Cronenberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Sean Baker, Ali Abbasi, and many others.
Lily Gladstone, who won several Best Actress awards last year (but not the Oscar!) for her revolutionary turn in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” is the other American joining Gerwig. The actress, currently seen on FX/Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” is returning to Cannes one year after Martin Scorsese and Apple Original Films brought “Flower Moon” to the French Riviera festival for its out-of-competition debut.
