Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington's stage version of Othello has set an all-time Broadway record. While both actors are known primarily for the screen, Washington and Gyllenhaal have also made their foray onto the stage. Washington is a previous Tony Award recipient, winning Best Leading Actor in a Play in 2010 for his role in Fences, which he later adapted for the screen. Gyllenhaal has been in productions both on and off-Broadway, including Sunday in the Park with George and Little Shop of Horrors. The actors currently star together in Othello.
Per Deadline, Othello has now broken the record for the highest-grossing play in Broadway history. In its previews at the Barrymore Theater, the Shakespeare play managed to bring in $2,818,297. This makes it the top-performing eight-performance play in Broadway history, breaking the previous record held by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which made $2,718,488.

‘Children of Blood and Bone’ is a 2018 romantic fantasy novel by Nigerian-American author Tomi Adeyemi. It’s her first book and the start of the ‘Legacy of Orïsha’ trilogy. The story follows Zélie Adebola, a young girl trying to bring magic back to the kingdom of Orïsha after the ruling class, the kosidáns, wiped out the maji, her people who once wielded magic.
Adeyemi spent 18 months and 45 drafts writing the novel, drawing inspiration from books like ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘An Ember in the Ashes,’ West African mythology, and Yoruba culture. She was also influenced by the pain of police violence against Black Americans.
The book was a huge success. It debuted at number one on ‘The New York Times’ Best Seller list for young adult books and received praise for tackling themes like oppression, racism, and slavery. It’s also a coming-of-age tale about young people finding the power to make change.

Elton John and Brandi Carlile have teased another song from their upcoming collaborative album, Who Believes in Angels? “Swing for the Fences” is a buoyant pop-rock moment from the pair of musical legends and friends.
On the anthemic rock track, the pair offers up a slice of hope and encouragement. “Go on and swing for the fences/Take a shot at the moon,” they sing on the catchy hook. In the vein of the album’s split nature between their two styles, the song is one of the more Carlile-led tracks.

Universal Pictures has revealed the new trailer for the horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, opening in theaters on March 28. The film has been rated PG-13 for terror, some violent content/bloody images, suicide-related content, and brief strong language.
In the movie, a lone, spectral woman shrouded entirely in black appears on a family’s front lawn without explanation and warns them “Today’s the day.” Where did she come from? What does she want? When will she leave? Only The Woman in the Yard knows.
From Blumhouse, the most successful global brand in horror, comes a new original chiller starring BAFTA and SAG nominee Danielle Deadwyler as Ramona, a woman crippled by grief after she survives a car accident that takes her husband.
Seriously injured, Ramona now must care for their 14-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, alone in her rural farmhouse. Then one day the woman takes form in their yard.

Denis Villeneuve recently revealed that he does not intend on helming a different film first, and his adaptation of Dune: Messiah (though the movie will likely end up being titled Dune: Part 3) will be his next project. Production is expected to get underway later this year, and we now have word on the return of a certain character from the first movie.
Though this won't come as a surprise to anyone who has read Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi saga, here's your Spoiler warning just in case.
Jason Momoa's Duncan Idaho was killed off towards the end of Dune: Part One, but Jeff Sneider has now confirmed that the Aquaman star will reprise the role for the third film.

Timothée Chalamet had a mic-drop moment at the SAG Awards on Sunday, singing his way to a Best Actor win for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet, who was in second place in the Gold Derby odds, beat Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Daniel Craig (Queer), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave).
"I know the classiest thing would be to downplay the effort that went into this role and how much this means to me," Chalamet said during his acceptance speech. "The truth is that this was five-and-a-half years of my life. I poured everything that I had into playing this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan — a true American hero. It was the honor of a lifetime to play him."
After thanking his costars, Chalamet proudly proclaimed, "I know we're in a subjective business, but the truth is, I'm in pursuit of greatness. I know people don't usually talk like that,...

Denzel Washington, a multi-talented Hollywood legend, has been dominating the world of acting, directing, and producing since his debut in the late 1970s. With an extensive filmography that highlights both action and drama movies, it is no surprise that the actor is beloved by critics and audiences alike. While Washington may be most recognized for his role as Robert McCall in the Equalizer films, his influence on the entertainment industry expands much further.
He has won various prestigious awards, including both Oscars and Golden Globes, for his roles in Glory and Training Day. He has also made an impact in theater, winning a Tony for his performance as Troy Maxson in Fences, a role he later reprised for the film adaptation.

In 2011, director Tate Taylor released his historical drama "The Help," a story that focuses on Black maids working and living with white families in the American South in the 1960s and attempts to put the focus on the maids rather than their (often bigoted and controlling) employers. Based on a novel of the same name by Kathryn Stockett, the film stars Viola Davis as Aibileen Clark, Octavia Spencer as Minny Jackson, and Emma Stone as Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, an aspiring writer who takes it upon herself to compile the stories of Black maids, including Minny and Aibileen, to tell the truth about how "the help" are treated — particularly in Jackson, Mississippi. Aibileen works for Skeeter's friend Elizabeth Leeholt (Ahna O'Reilly), a neglectful mother to her young daughter (upon whom Aibileen dotes), while Minny works for the odious and cruel Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her mother (played by Sissy Spacek...

Most readers recall the night of February 26, 2017, when Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty took to the stage at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony. That was the year "La La Land" was nominated for a whopping 14 Oscars, tying the nomination record of films like "Titanic" and "All About Eve." In the Best Picture category, it faced off against "Arrival," "Fences," "Hell or High Water," "Hacksaw Ridge," "Hidden Figures," "Lion," and "Manchester by the Sea." They were all defeated (most would argue rightly) by Barry Jenkins' subdued queer drama "Moonlight."
Of course, when Best Picture was announced, a mixup was revealed. Beatty and Dunaway were handed a backup envelope for Best Actress by mistake. Emma Stone had just won Best Actress for "La La Land," but the "spare" envelope was still backstage. When Beatty opened it in front of an audience of billions, he looked a little confused. He showed the envelope to Dunaway,...

Cynthia Erivo made Oscar history on Thursday morning with her Best Actress bid for Wicked. She is now only the second Black female performer to receive multiple bids in this category, after Viola Davis.
Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West, in director Jon M. Chu‘s big-budget adaptation of the beloved Broadway stage musical. Wicked actually marks her second Best Actress mention after Harriet (2019), for which she also earned a Best Song bid for “Stand Up” (cowritten with Joshuah Brian Campbell). Wicked received 10 Oscar nominations this year, including for Erivo’s supporting co-star Ariana Grande.
Davis was the first to accomplish such a feat, thanks to her double Best Actress Oscar bids for The Help (2011) and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020). While she lost both of those contests, she did win the Best Supporting Actress prize for Fences (2016); she also had a prior bid in that...

Denzel Washington not getting an Oscar nomination for Gladiator II would repeat history, as he also didn't receive a nomination for Ridley Scott's 2007 film American Gangster. Washington is one of the most celebrated actors of all time. Washington's most recent performance was in Gladiator II, the long-awaited sequel to Scott's 2000 movie. In the opening frames of The Piano Lesson, fireworks light up the sky to celebrate Independence Day and a young boy is tasked with keeping watch while his father reclaims a family heirloom. There is no way for either to know that the night’s events will haunt several generations to come, or that liberation — and the fireworks that herald it — can take many forms.

Famous actor Denzel Washington has not received a BAFTA nomination again, this time for his performance in Gladiator II. The British film academy revealed its shortlist on Wednesday, continuing Washington’s 45-year absence without any awards from Britain’s top film prizes.
Washington, 70, plays Macrinus, a former slave who plans to take over Rome in Ridley Scott’s historical movie. He was on the first top-ten list but didn’t make it to the final six choices. Instead, actors Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”) and Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”) were recognized for their supporting parts.
It’s noticeable that something is missing because of Washington’s great success. He has received nine Oscar nominations and won two, along with over 270 awards, in his 40 years of playing. The British Academy still ignores his acts, even the ones that have won important awards elsewhere.
This pattern features some of his most admired parts.

Another year, another BAFTA snub for Denzel Washington.
The two-time Oscar winner has never been nominated by the British Academy and was snubbed again on Wednesday, missing out on a nomination in Best Supporting Actor for Gladiator II. The nominees were Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice).
Washington’s shutout at BAFTA has been one of the most curious and high-profile slights in the group’s history. Over his nearly 50-year career, the actor has accrued nine acting Oscar nominations, winning Best Supporting Actor for 1989’s Glory and Best Actor for 2001’s Training Day, the latter of which made him the second Black man to prevail in lead. His first Oscar bid was for his supporting turn in Cry Freedom (1987), and his other nominations were in lead for Malcolm X...

As Shakespeare wrote, “Life is but a walking shadow,” and Denzel Washington is the poor player who continues to be heard no more, at least in the eyes of BAFTA.
With over 65 film credits, nine Academy Award nominations (including two wins) and more than 270 accolades across a 45-year career, Denzel Washington is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation. Yet, despite his towering legacy, Washington remains an undeniable blind spot for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
This year is no exception. On Wednesday, the BAFTA nominations were unveiled, and Washington, 70, was conspicuously absent yet again, snubbed for his villainous role in Ridley Scott’s epic “Gladiator II.” Playing Macrinus, a former slave who schemes to control Rome, Washington’s performance has been hailed by critics as a chilling and layered turn worthy of awards recognition.

Denzel Washington has been one of the most successful Hollywood actors for nearly five decades. From the iconic Malcolm X to Training Day, Antwone Fisher to Fences, this incredibly versatile actor knows how to avoid being pigeonholed by certain character types. Washington thrives on challenges and frequently returns to the theater to keep his acting muscles as active as possible. In February, Washington will take on the title role in Othello in Shakespeare's classical play, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway.
But despite all his deliberate choices, there is one movie he regrets declining. Years ago, Denzel had a casual interview with Jamie Foxx on YouTube for Grey Goose Vodka, and the comedian asked the legend if there were any project he wished he would have done. Washington took only a few seconds to reply with: Se7en. Washington explained that when he read...

The SAG Awards’ 2025 nominations have not made an already up-in-the-air Oscar race much clearer.
While there was much anticipation that “Wicked” would fare well with the voting body composed of Screen Actors Guild members, star Jonathan Bailey being nominated for Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture is not something that was on too many people’s radars.
Even more of a curveball are the nominations for “The Last Showgirl” stars Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis, even if hindsight being 20/20, it has been evident how well liked the pair are by their peers. Remember, the SAG Awards are what teed up Curtis to win her Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” in what was a close race between her, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett, and “The Banshees of Inisherin” breakout Kerry Condon.
All of this is to say, while the rest of the...

Yesterday evening, a rumour hit social media claiming that Marvel Studios is making moves to recast Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa. The news has received a mixed response, though many fans are eager to see the character back on screen.
After Boseman passed away, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever confirmed that T'Challa had also died. Shuri inherited the mantle and the sequel ended by revealing the hero secretly had a son with Nakia, a young boy also named T'Challa.
While Avengers: Secret Wars' Black Panther may be a Variant, we think Toussaint is going to be aged up before picking up where his father left off in the Mutant Saga. With all that in mind, we're now taking a look at the actors who could take over this role in the MCU.

NBC's Grimm, one of the most underrated dark fantasy shows of the past decade, has now hit streaming. Featuring a likable cast that went on to become familiar faces, Grimm followed a supernatural hunter who battled classic fantasy creatures. A forgotten gem from the 2010s, Grimm was a rare instance when the modernization of classic fairy and folk tales worked as a procedural. It's not perfect by any means, especially in the show's latter seasons, but there is enough to keep fantasy lovers invested from start to finish.
All six seasons of Grimm are now available to stream on Peacock. The show stars David Giuntoli as Nicholas "Nick" Burkhardt, a homicide detective who comes from a long line of "Grimms," which have the superhuman ability to see the mythological creatures known as the Wesen. Alongside his partner, Detective Hank (Russell Hornsby), they solve week-to-week mysteries revolving around the Wesen...

The room was overflowing with emotion, gratitude and appreciation Friday night as the Golden Globe Awards’ inaugural Golden Gala paid tribute to two singular and beloved stars, Ted Danson and Viola Davis.
Danson took the audience at the Beverly Hilton through his journey as an actor as he accepted the Carol Burnett Award for his contributions to television over his long career. It all started when he was given the chance to bring the indelible character of Sam Malone to life on the NBC sitcom “Cheers,” which ran 11 seasons from 1982 to 1993. The creators and executive producers of that series, brothers Glen Charles and Les Charles, were in the audience.
“Everything I have in life acting-wise comes from you all,” Danson said to the Charles brothers. “I can’t thank you enough. You’re brilliant.”

Viola Davis and Ted Danson got their golden moment a couple of days before the Golden Globes.
On Friday, the duo was feted in a lavish “Golden Gala” as this year’s recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award (Davis) and the Carol Burnett Award (Danson) for their respective career achievements in film and television. (Watch their full speeches below.) Traditionally these awards have been bestowed live during the annual Golden Globes broadcast, but that’s not the case this year; instead, Davis and Danson have been asked to present at Sunday’s ceremony on CBS.
Meryl Streep presented the award to Davis, exactly eight years after Davis honored her Doubt co-star with the same prestigious trophy. As for Danson, his wife Mary Steenburgen served as the presenter. The Cecil B. Viola Davis is about to be the next American president — at least on-screen. The venerable Egot'ed actress, known for her work in films like Fences, The Woman King, and literally hundreds of other projects for big and small screens (to say nothing of her Broadway stagework), is set to star in director Patricia Riggen's new action thriller, G20, which has finally secured itself a release date. And it's coming to audiences on Prime Video starting April 10, 2025.
In new, exclusive reporting from Variety, the Davis-fronted film will also feature Anthony Anderson, Clark Gregg, and Antony Starr, the latter of whom is perhaps most well known for his devious and diabolical portrayal of superhero Homelander in Prime Video's acclaimed and wildly unhinged series, The Boys.

Dune and Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has stated that he has no intention of helming any more movies in the franchise after his planned Dune: Messiah adaptation, but that doesn't mean Warner Bros. will stop making them!
According to scooper Daniel Richtman (and backed up by a report from World of Reel), the studio is planning to move forward with at least one more Dune movie and a second TV series.
HBO's Dune: Prophecy was not as acclaimed as the films, but it reportedly did pretty well from a viewership standpoint.
The first two movies were big successes, but a fourth chapter would still be somewhat surprising given the direction Frank Herbert's saga goes in after the second book. Villeneuve has shown little interest in adapting the later novels, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune, as he feels the story starts to become too "esoteric.

John David Washington found himself in a rare situation while promoting his latest film, Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson.” It was his first real press tour in a while, since the rollout for his previous few films (including Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator”) were impacted by the Covid pandemic, then the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“It was a relief to be able to do it like you’re supposed to, as far as getting with the people, right after they see it in the theater, and talking,” Washington says. And after one screening in Paris, his parents — actors Denzel and Pauletta Washington — joined him onstage for the Q&a. “I never thought that I’d be on the same stage with my old man talking about a film that we’re a part of — not in my wildest dreams.”

Denzel Washington made his feature film debut over 40 years ago in 1981’s “Carbon Copy” and in the decades since has played everyone from real-life public figures such as civil rights activist Malcolm X and wrongly imprisoned boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter to crooked cops like Alonzo in “Training Day” and Joe Deacon in “The Little Things” to even William Shakespeare‘s most famed villain, Macbeth, in “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” His latest villainous turn is for the 2024 Ridley Scott sequel “Gladiator II.”
For his prolific nature and exemplary work, Washington has received numerous awards: he snagged his first Oscar nomination for 1987’s “Cry Freedom” and won his first Oscar two years later for 1989’s “Glory.” Twelve years after that, Washington made history when “Training Day” made him the first Black actor since Sidney Poitier (“Lilies of the Field” in 1963) to win in the Best Actor category. Denzel Washington has made it clear that he intends to bring all of August Wilson’s plays to the big screen, as only a niche of viewers was able to see them on the stage. In addition to directing an adaptation of Fences and serving as a producer on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Washington has put his full support behind his son, Malcolm Washington, who made his directorial debut with an adaptation of The Piano Lesson. The Piano Lesson is easily the best of these three projects, as it both examines a complex family dynamic and inserts supernatural themes that ensure that it doesn’t feel just like a filmed stage production. However, the fealty that Washington’s adaptation of The Piano Lesson showed to the original text resulted in a very confusing line that doesn’t make sense when comparing the relative ages of the leading actors.

Not only does the great and discerning Denzel Washington have a commanding presence with an electric charisma and fiery delivery, but he's also one of cinema's greatest orators. His background in theatre and Shakespeare gives him a powerful control over his speech, and his words flow trippingly off the tongue in ways that perfectly fit his characters. We've recently seen Denzel Washington have a lot of fun with his scene-stealing performance in "Gladiator II" as a conniving arms dealer who plans to take over Rome, like the way he over-enunciates the word "politics-uh," poking fun at the current bureaucracy.
This aspect of his performance style made him ideal for his role in "The Great Debaters" as Professor Melvin Tolson, a mercurial debate coach who encourages his students from a tiny, all-Black college in Texas to go up against Harvard University's championship team. Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind the awards season’s buzziest movies continues with Netflix’s The Piano Lesson, the adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning August Wilson play that was directed by Malcolm Washington in his feature-helming debut. Washington co-wrote the script with Virgil Williams, the Oscar-nominated so-screenwriter of 2017’s Mudbound.
The film, which features a stellar ensemble including Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. It hit theaters in early November and began streaming on Netflix on November 22, and has since picked up a Best First Feature Spirit Awards nomination for Malcolm Washington and several supporting actress noms for Deadwyler.
Malcolm and Williams teamed to work on the script to get to the root of Wilson’s play, the latest in the playwright’s Century Cycle series to be adapted to the screen.
In Piano Lesson, the story is set in the 1930s and revolves around the Charles family’s prized heirloom piano. One brother (John David Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it, while one sister (Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past.
Deadline Related Video:
“Every family has a history, stories from the past that inform the present; an origin story,” Malcolm Washington says. “Ultimately this story is much bigger than me and my family — it, like the Black American experience, is an inter-connected web of stories that span space and time.”
In addition to Mudbound, Williams, the longtime Criminal Minds writer-producer, previously teamed with Denzel Washington, co-writing the Washington-directed 2021 drama A Journal For Jordan starring Michael B. Jordan and Chanté Adams.
Check out Malcolm Washington and Williams’ A Piano Lesson script below.

When Denzel Washington enters the room, you sit up straight. You pay attention. After all, you are in the presence of greatness. But even legends can be re-imagined.
Washington is entering a new career chapter, but he’s far from slowing down. As the two-time Oscar winner gears up for his 70th birthday on Dec. 28, he’s stepping into uncharted territory, taking on roles that push his boundaries, nurturing new talent and reflecting on a career that has redefined Hollywood. Not only is Washington’s riveting performance in Ridley Scott’s epic “Gladiator II” at the heart of this chapter, but so is a new personal decision to live a healthy lifestyle.
“It’s been a journey,” Washington says to Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I’ve been on a two-year program to get healthier. At the Academy Awards, I looked at myself and thought, ‘I’ve got to change.

Denzel Washington could receive an Academy Award nomination for a 2024 film he did not even appear in. After receiving a 2025 Golden Globe nomination in the "Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role" category, it is possible that Washington could also get nominated for an Oscar for his work on Gladiator II. Washington joined the Gladiator II cast as Macrinus, an arms dealer and gladiator owner who has ambitions to rule Rome.
Macrinus' backstory in Gladiator II is very interesting, since he was owned by former Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius for many years before finally gaining his freedom. Washington's impressive performance in Gladiator II makes Macrinus one of the most interesting characters in the movie. Following the release of Gladiator II, it has been suggested that Washington deserves an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. However, Washington could also receive another nomination at the 2025 Oscars for a film that he produced.

Ryan Reynolds is, in some ways, a very different actor than Washington. He is primarily known for comedy, frequenting movies like Free Guy and the like. Like Washington, 2024 has also been a fairly significant year for Reynolds' career. Most notably, he reprised his role as Deadpool for Deadpool & Wolverine, the first of the Deadpool movies to be officially part of the MCU.

When Tamara Tunie signed on as the matriarch of CBS’s upcoming soap opera Beyond the Gates, there was a celebration and a sigh of relief from TV fans.
