Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington's stage version of Othello has set an all-time Broadway record. While both actors are known primarily for the screen, Washington and Gyllenhaal have also made their foray onto the stage. Washington is a previous Tony Award recipient, winning Best Leading Actor in a Play in 2010 for his role in Fences, which he later adapted for the screen. Gyllenhaal has been in productions both on and off-Broadway, including Sunday in the Park with George and Little Shop of Horrors. The actors currently star together in Othello.

Per Deadline, Othello has now broken the record for the highest-grossing play in Broadway history. In its previews at the Barrymore Theater, the Shakespeare play managed to bring in $2,818,297. This makes it the top-performing eight-performance play in Broadway history, breaking the previous record held by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which made $2,718,488.

A few months ago news broke that Nolan’s mysterious upcoming project is an adaptation of ‘The Odyssey.’ Universal Pictures announced that Christopher Nolan’s next movie is a global action epic based on Homer’s ‘The Odyssey.’ It will use new IMAX technology and hit theaters on July 17, 2026.

The movie already has a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Elliot Page. Production on the movie has already begun, with Nolan writing and producing alongside Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner.

Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ is one of the oldest stories still read today. It tells the tale of the Greek hero Odysseus and his challenging journey home after the Trojan War.

‘Children of Blood and Bone’ is a 2018 romantic fantasy novel by Nigerian-American author Tomi Adeyemi. It’s her first book and the start of the ‘Legacy of Orïsha’ trilogy. The story follows Zélie Adebola, a young girl trying to bring magic back to the kingdom of Orïsha after the ruling class, the kosidáns, wiped out the maji, her people who once wielded magic.

Adeyemi spent 18 months and 45 drafts writing the novel, drawing inspiration from books like ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘An Ember in the Ashes,’ West African mythology, and Yoruba culture. She was also influenced by the pain of police violence against Black Americans.

The book was a huge success. It debuted at number one on ‘The New York Times’ Best Seller list for young adult books and received praise for tackling themes like oppression, racism, and slavery. It’s also a coming-of-age tale about young people finding the power to make change.

Elton John and Brandi Carlile have teased another song from their upcoming collaborative album, Who Believes in Angels? “Swing for the Fences” is a buoyant pop-rock moment from the pair of musical legends and friends.

On the anthemic rock track, the pair offers up a slice of hope and encouragement. “Go on and swing for the fences/Take a shot at the moon,” they sing on the catchy hook. In the vein of the album’s split nature between their two styles, the song is one of the more Carlile-led tracks.

Universal Pictures has revealed the new trailer for the horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, opening in theaters on March 28. The film has been rated PG-13 for terror, some violent content/bloody images, suicide-related content, and brief strong language.

In the movie, a lone, spectral woman shrouded entirely in black appears on a family’s front lawn without explanation and warns them “Today’s the day.” Where did she come from? What does she want? When will she leave? Only The Woman in the Yard knows.

From Blumhouse, the most successful global brand in horror, comes a new original chiller starring BAFTA and SAG nominee Danielle Deadwyler as Ramona, a woman crippled by grief after she survives a car accident that takes her husband.

Seriously injured, Ramona now must care for their 14-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, alone in her rural farmhouse. Then one day the woman takes form in their yard.

“Today’s the day,” The Woman in the Yard eerily sings in the second official trailer for Universal & Blumhouse’s upcoming horror thriller, and it reveals a closer look at the supernatural nightmare ahead for a fractured family.

Spike Lee has shared the first look at his latest film, “Highest 2 Lowest,” with lead actor A$AP Rocky in a prison jumpsuit. The first-look image was posted just 24 hours after A$AP Rocky was found not guilty in a semiautomatic firearm case.

This exclusion from the 2025 BAFTA Awards shortlist has sparked conversations about the possible reasons behind Washington being snubbed from the British award.

Famous actor Denzel Washington has not received a BAFTA nomination again, this time for his performance in Gladiator II. The British film academy revealed its shortlist on Wednesday, continuing Washington’s 45-year absence without any awards from Britain’s top film prizes.

Washington, 70, plays Macrinus, a former slave who plans to take over Rome in Ridley Scott’s historical movie. He was on the first top-ten list but didn’t make it to the final six choices. Instead, actors Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”) and Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”) were recognized for their supporting parts.

It’s noticeable that something is missing because of Washington’s great success. He has received nine Oscar nominations and won two, along with over 270 awards, in his 40 years of playing. The British Academy still ignores his acts, even the ones that have won important awards elsewhere.

Viola Davis is about to be the next American president — at least on-screen. The venerable Egot'ed actress, known for her work in films like Fences, The Woman King, and literally hundreds of other projects for big and small screens (to say nothing of her Broadway stagework), is set to star in director Patricia Riggen's new action thriller, G20, which has finally secured itself a release date. And it's coming to audiences on Prime Video starting April 10, 2025.

In new, exclusive reporting from Variety, the Davis-fronted film will also feature Anthony Anderson, Clark Gregg, and Antony Starr, the latter of whom is perhaps most well known for his devious and diabolical portrayal of superhero Homelander in Prime Video's acclaimed and wildly unhinged series, The Boys.

Dune and Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has stated that he has no intention of helming any more movies in the franchise after his planned Dune: Messiah adaptation, but that doesn't mean Warner Bros. will stop making them!

According to scooper Daniel Richtman (and backed up by a report from World of Reel), the studio is planning to move forward with at least one more Dune movie and a second TV series.

HBO's Dune: Prophecy was not as acclaimed as the films, but it reportedly did pretty well from a viewership standpoint.

The first two movies were big successes, but a fourth chapter would still be somewhat surprising given the direction Frank Herbert's saga goes in after the second book. Villeneuve has shown little interest in adapting the later novels, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune, as he feels the story starts to become too "esoteric.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind the awards season’s buzziest movies continues with Netflix’s The Piano Lesson, the adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning August Wilson play that was directed by Malcolm Washington in his feature-helming debut. Washington co-wrote the script with Virgil Williams, the Oscar-nominated so-screenwriter of 2017’s Mudbound.

The film, which features a stellar ensemble including Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. It hit theaters in early November and began streaming on Netflix on November 22, and has since picked up a Best First Feature Spirit Awards nomination for Malcolm Washington and several supporting actress noms for Deadwyler.

Malcolm and Williams teamed to work on the script to get to the root of Wilson’s play, the latest in the playwright’s Century Cycle series to be adapted to the screen.

In Piano Lesson, the story is set in the 1930s and revolves around the Charles family’s prized heirloom piano. One brother (John David Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it, while one sister (Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past.

“Every family has a history, stories from the past that inform the present; an origin story,” Malcolm Washington says. “Ultimately this story is much bigger than me and my family — it, like the Black American experience, is an inter-connected web of stories that span space and time.”

In addition to Mudbound, Williams, the longtime Criminal Minds writer-producer, previously teamed with Denzel Washington, co-writing the Washington-directed 2021 drama A Journal For Jordan starring Michael B. Jordan and Chanté Adams.
