As everyone knows, Disney has been having a blast while turning its cherished animated classics into live-action movies. And while some of these, like The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King, ended up being tremendous hits, others were labeled failures that nobody, not even Disney, wants to mention. I
n spite of the opinions of the fans, the company is continuing with its live-action remakes of the same storylines that we have already seen.
One of the more controversial of these adaptations is the planned adaptation of Snow White which is going to star Rachel Zegler. The movie has already been criticized for several aspects, such as the casting of the lead actor, the visual effects, and how the Dwarves are portrayed in the film. Others, as usual, took issue with the movie being accused of being woke.

Between the Temples (Nathan Silver)
In a state of arrested development after his wife unexpectedly died from a freak accident, Ben Gottlieb (Jason Schwartzman) is suicidal, pleading to a truck to just run him over and begging that he be fired from his job as cantor at the local Jewish temple in upstate New York. While this set-up may not scream comedy, Between the Temples is in fact hilarious, packed with endless jokes and adoration for physical gags while we witness Ben find new meaning...

Ken Page was best known as a stage actor, with Deadline referring to him as one of Broadway’s most familiar character actors, but he did earn several film credits over the decades as well, appearing in films like Torch Song Trilogy, The Kid Who Loved Christmas, I’ll Do Anything, and Dreamgirls, as well as TV shows like Gimme a Break!, Family Matters, Touched by an Angel, and more. Page also did a good amount of voice acting work – with his most popular credit coming when he provided the voice of Oogie Boogie in the Henry Selick / Tim Burton stop-motion classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. Page would go on to voice Oogie Boogie again for the Kingdom Hearts video games, the video game The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, and the ride walk-through short Haunted Mansion Holiday. Sadly, it’s being reported that Page passed away in his sleep...

A few years ago, I was talking to the host of a popular Disney-theme-park podcast when the conversation invariably led to where it always does between two Disney adults: Why do we love Disney so much, when everything it does seems tailor-made to piss us off?
This was in 2022, in the midst of a particularly brutal public-relations war sparked by the so-called Don’t Say Gay bill, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ legislation prohibiting public schools from including materials about LGBTQ+ identities in their curricula. Many Disney employees were outraged by the bill,...

No one will confuse "A Song Of Ice and Fire" with an old-fashioned fairy tale. George R. R. Martin, author of the still-incomplete epic, is not shy about admitting his influences, though, and classic fantasy is one of his greatest.
In "A Dance With Dragons," Quentyn Martell's doomed quest to marry Queen Daenerys Targaryen is compared with the tale of the Frog Prince (apparently a bedtime story in both Westeros and our world). This time, a princess' kiss does not make the frog into a romantic hero — Quentyn is kissed only by dragonfire. "The Frog Prince" was first told by the Brothers Grimm in the 1800s, but one can easily draw parallels to an earlier, even more famous French fable: "Beauty and the Beast."
In the 2012 "A Song of Ice and Fire" calendar, artist John Picacio drew 12 drawings of the series' most famous characters. For October, he picked Sansa Stark and Sandor Clegane/The Hound,...

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a decade since Moana first set sail on her journey and captivated audiences across the globe, but our favorite Disney heroine is finally making her way back to the big screen for the exciting chapter in her story!
This time around, Moana is once again going to take to the sea for another adventure, but this time, it won’t just be Maui and Heihei joining her.
“In the first film, Moana goes on this epic adventure and she really comes into her own as a wayfinder and it was so important to us as we were making the second film that we didn't try to reinvent who she was, but that we started to expand her world and we really started asking ourselves what's next for Moana? What new kind of leadership goals can she have in this film? It...

Generally, when one is at a film festival, the goal is to see new movies. Part of the appeal of film festivals seeing movies that either might not come out for months, may only go to streaming, or worse yet, never secure a release at all. But every so often, an anniversary or special screening of a cult classic is worth carving out time for. That happened at this year's Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, when a brand new 4K restoration of director Adam Wingard's "The Guest" debuted for the first time anywhere. I'm here to say that this wildly underseen thriller has never looked better.
For those who may not be familiar with "The Guest," the film stars Dan Stevens as a soldier who shows up on an unsuspecting family's doorstep claiming to be a friend of their fallen son who gave his life in the military. He...

Harry Potter brought a world full of magic and wizards, where anything seemed possible. The first movie, titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was released way back in 2001. And even after several decades and eight movies later, the franchise is still loved by millions. Based on the novels of acclaimed author J.K. Rowling, the project also brought forth three new faces out in the open.

“The Wild Robot” director Chris Sanders was feeling a little lost himself.
In 2020, he ventured into live-action filmmaking with “The Call of the Wild,” an ambitious, imperfect adaptation of Jack London’s 1903 novel. Sanders got to work with Janusz Kaminski, Steven Spielberg’s regular cinematographer, and it allowed him to direct Harrison Ford as a grizzled frontiersman. But the film opened a few weeks before the pandemic shut down movie theaters.
For the first time in his career, Sanders had delivered a disappointment.
Then DreamWorks Animation, the studio where the filmmaker had made “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Croods,” wooed him back. He looked at the projects the studio had in development or owned the rights to and quickly zeroed in on “The Wild Robot,” a book by American author and illustrator Peter Brown about a high-tech machine that washes up on an island inhabited by animals.

Tim Burton is one of our most distinctive filmmakers. Whether you love him, hate him, or land somewhere in the middle, there is no denying that Burton has a voice and that voice has become rather valuable. From proving that "Batman" could be an A-tier superhero franchise to producing undeniable classics like "Beetlejuice," he's been making his mark on cinema for decades. Burton's biggest moment came in 2010 when his live-action take on "Alice in Wonderland" hit theaters. Divisive though the movie may be, it made box office history at the time -- and what's more, it laid the groundwork for the next decade of blockbuster filmmaking in Hollywood, particularly at Disney.
In the modern era, a big blockbuster film making $1 billion or more at the box office is not all that uncommon. To date, 55 movies have made at least that much money worldwide. Rather crucially, though, the vast majority of...

When Josh Gad joined the voice cast of Disney's animated movie "Frozen," which came out in 2013, he probably didn't think that he was about to become part of one of the biggest pop culture juggernauts in recent history. Both the original and its 2019 sequel, "Frozen II," made buckets of money at the box office, while the first movie also scored an Academy Award for best original song (thanks to the inescapable earworm "Let It Go"). Plus, Gad's character Olaf, a living snowman who wants to experience summer, became a breakout success on his own. So does Gad have any regrets about his "Frozen" experience? Yes, actually. He wishes he'd changed his voice a little more for the character.
"If I could do it all over again, I would not have lent that snowman my voice. I would've created a different voice," Gad said while participating in an interview at Fan Expo Canada,...

Hideaki Anno is a prolific director in the anime world. You might know him from his most celebrated creation, the Evangelion franchise. While the director is surfing his successes with one hit film after another, it seems that his one dream production is far from his control.
Anno was previously involved in the animation of Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Thus, he has always wanted to remake the movie on his own terms. There have also been rumors that the director wants to create an anime series out of the source material left out during the movie’s creation.

Josh Gad reveals the “big mistake” he made when it came to voicing Olaf in Frozen.
“If I could do it all over again, I would not have lent that snowman my voice. I would’ve created a different voice,” the actor shared during a recent interview at Fan Expo Canada. “It’s very weird being in a supermarket and having a little child go like this …” slowly turning his head to the side.
“That was my first big mistake,” Gad added. “But, you know, people tell me I have a very unique voice. People seem to like my voice, so I try to give it to them when I can.”
The Beauty and the Beast actor lent his voice to Olaf, the wildly popular snowman, in 2013’s Frozen as well as its 2019 sequel. He has also voiced the character in several Disney shorts. Gad is expected to join Kristen Bell...

A little over a year after its release, the Live-Action Remake of The Little Mermaid has left the public consciousness (aside from the Disney Jr. animated series Ariel). The movie caused many to rethink and ask, “Why do we need all of these remakes?”
The once profitable trend that Disney could rely on for money is drying up.
The film’s first teaser trailer currently holds the record for the most disliked trailer for any Hollywood production. With over 30 million views, it has 3.8 million dislikes.
At the world wide box office the movie made $569.6 million against a reported $240.2 million budget (before advertising costs and theater cuts). Initially Disney was said to have made a small profit from the film. Not as much as the billion dollar success movies like the 2017 Beauty and the Beast or the 2019 Lion King, however, it turns out that the original reported budget wasn’t accurate...

George R.R. Martin is an author who needs no introduction...but today warrants one anyway, because we're diving deep into his career for an exclusive, in-depth discussion with the man himself. Over the past 53 years, Martin has established himself as one of the most important voices of our time in the genres of fantasy and science fiction. He began publishing stories professionally in 1971, when he sold his short story "The Hero" to Galaxy Magazine at the age of 21. After that, he wrote numerous works of short fiction before releasing his first novel in 1977, the space opera Dying of the Light. Along the way, Martin won both the Hugo and Nebula award, gained many more award nominations, and published dozens of stories, earning him a reputation as a rising star of speculative fiction.

The Oscars race is wide open this year, and so is the question of which film will win the coveted TIFF Audience Award.
With A-listers like Selena Gomez and Angelina Jolie and breakout stars like Mikey Madison and Gabriel Labelle, the 49th annual Toronto International Film Festival concludes on Sunday after screening 278 films over its 10-day run. Following Pedro Almodóvar’s stunning melodrama, “The Room Next Door,” taking the Golden Lion at Venice, attention shifts to the Canadian festival to see which film will get a significant boost in the early days of the best picture race.
While some films here scream awards potential, others are destined only for commercial success, while others are just blips in the massive lineup. Below are potential awards contenders from other films screened at the festival and Variety’s predictions on which film will win the TIFF Audience Award on Sunday, Sept. 15.

We open on a world bathed in concrete gray. There’s a powerful government, a postapocalyptic class system with a telling name, and an unassuming teenager primed to start a worldwide revolution. Sound familiar? That’s because it’s the underpinning of most popular dystopian young adult franchises, including Uglies, a mid-aughts novel series by Scott Westerfeld that has finally been adapted to film (now streaming on Netflix). Unfortunately, while Westerfeld’s books were memorable trendsetters in the genre, the long-awaited movie feels like a collection of YA clichés. And...

In the world of George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, one colloquialism is that "words are wind." This is the Westeros equivalent of "actions speak louder." Martin has proven the emptiness of promises correct by having failed to deliver the sixth book, fittingly titled "The Winds Of Winter."
With no new story to discuss, one pastime in "Asoiaf" fan circles is debating why Martin is taking so long, and if he even intends to finish at all. One theory, which notes the hiatus coincided with the premiere of television adaptation "Game of Thrones," is that Martin lost interest in telling the story as prose. Remember, he spent the '80s and '90s as a TV writer after his third novel, "The Armageddon Rag," flopped. He pivoted back to novels with "A Song of Ice and Fire" because his screenplays weren't being made. With...

Vertical has released the first trailer for a new horror comedy titled Your Monster, which stars Scream and Abigail actress Melissa Barrera in the lead role as a woman who falls for the literal monster in her closet.
Directed, written and produced by Caroline Lindy, this Beauty and the Beast-inspired tale is based on Lindy's short of the same name, and also stars Tommy Dewey, Meghann Fahy, Edmund Donovan and Kayla Foster. Producers include Kayla Foster, Shannon Reilly, Melanie Donkers, and Kira Carstensen.
Barrera was asked about the comparisons to Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve's classic fairytale in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.
"So many people have been asking about the Beauty and the Beast reference, and it didn’t begin as that at all. Originally, in the script, it was more of a banter-y comedy with this monster as a guide. But once we got on set, the...

"I'm a mess!" "No you're not!" Ahaha listen to the monster! Vertical has unveiled the official trailer for an original horror comedy musical called Your Monster, created by the filmmaker Caroline Lindy. This first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in the Midnight section, earning some rave reviews (I saw it there - it's a very good time!). After her life falls apart, soft-spoken actor Laura Franco finds her voice again when she meets a terrifying, yet weirdly charming Monster living in her closet. A romantic-comedy-horror film about falling in love with your inner rage. The monster is an actual giant, hairy, big guy kind of like a live-action Beast from Beauty and the Beast. But he's also just a metaphor for her "inner rage" – or maybe he really is real? Watch the film and find out. Your Monster stars Melissa Barrera as Laura, with Tommy Dewey as the beast,...

Rachel Zegler is receiving all the heat for her upcoming film, Snow White. The film cast Zegler, of Latina descent, as the titular character, which was a move welcomed by many. However, Zegler bashing Disney’s original fairy tale hasn’t helped the film a bit. Amidst the controversy, The Hunger Games actress’ performance at Elsie Fest in New York City is receiving appreciation.

George R.R. Martin may be best known for writing A Song of Ice and Fire, his sprawling epic fantasy series which was adapted into the mega-hit show Game of Thrones by HBO, but he's written a lot of other works too. Martin's career as a writer goes all the way back to the early 1970s, where he first made a name for himself writing short fiction and novels that spanned the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. In those days, he hadn't yet created Westeros; that means he has quite a catalog of stories which are set elsewhere, from the cold depths of space to strange alien worlds and even historical periods on our own Earth. And if Martin has his way, we'll see more of those non-Westeros stories get adapted to film in the future.

Emma Watson just doesn’t jump into a role unless she fully gets to understand and transform into a character. Watson has been on a hiatus from films for a long time but fans are still ready to go watch her back on screen anytime. The Harry Potter star famously turned down Emma Stone’s Oscar-winning role of Mia in La La Land.

The curse of success is a fascinating thing in Hollywood. It has always been a "What have you done for me lately?" business. In the case of director Andy Muschietti, in the fall of 2017, he delivered Warner Bros. the biggest horror movie of all time when he nailed an adaptation of Stephen King's much-beloved novel "It." While King's novel had previously been adapted as a TV miniseries in the '90s, Muschietti's take on the material resonated with audiences in a way that nobody could have predicted. The great news for all involved is that King's novel is an unwieldy beast that no one movie could possibly hope to contain.

Lilo & Stitch is coming back in 2025, and there are good reasons this is one Disney live-action adaptation we're looking forward to!
Disney has been on a tear in the last decade with live-action adaptations of past Disney animated films. While some may slam them as inferior compared to the originals, the box office successes of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid show there is an audience for them. True, some have been less than stellar (Pinocchio), and hopes for the upcoming Snow White are low, to say the least.
Yet Lilo & Stitch is different. The 2002 film was arguably the last great hand-drawn animated Disney film, grossing $273 million. It spawned its own cartoon series spin-off, the Stitch's Great Escape ride at Disney World and the character is still popular. So having it join the live-action trend seems inevitable and there's reasons to be excited for it.

Helena Bonham Carter is a name synonymous with eccentricity, bold outfits, and a penchant for quirky roles. But her personal life, too, has been no less dramatic, filled with its own twists and turns. One particularly colorful chapter began in 1994 when she became romantically involved with Kenneth Branagh on the set of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

But wait…this was a classic love triangle. Well, Branagh was still married to Emma Thompson at the time. The affair concluded not only in significant emotional upheaval for the Harry Potter actress but ultimately led to the end of her marriage in 1995.
Thompson, however, being the high road-taker extraordinaire, later stated in a 2013 interview that she’s no longer interested in revisiting old conflicts as she made peace with Bonham Carter long ago.

Emmy-nominated actress Anya Taylor-Joy has said she is eager to take on the role of Elsa in a possible live-action adaptation of Disney’s hit animated movie “Frozen.” In a recent interview, Taylor-Joy said portraying the ice queen would allow her to show off magical abilities on screen. She also believes the singing, dancing, and acting demands of the role are challenges she is ready to take on.
Known for her breakout performances in “The Queen’s Gambit” and the upcoming film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Taylor-Joy sees potential in playing Elsa. “It would be very fun to shoot ice out of your hand,” she explained to Vogue Hong Kong. As the eldest sister to several young nieces and nephews, Taylor-Joy thinks being Elsa in a live-action film would thrill her family. “I would love for them to be able to say ‘my auntie is Elsa,'” she remarked.

Nothing can stop the momentum of Deadpool and Wolverine. Marvel's most unlikely dream team continues to break box-office records six weeks into its run, proving itself to be the force to be reckoned fans were hoping it would be, with its performance worthy of Marvel Studios' classic days of non-stop box office domination.
The film has now grossed an incredible $1.2 billion, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. If you've been keeping up with its performance, you probably already knew that because it accomplished that incredible feat just in under two weeks; not bad for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first foray into R-rated territory.
The film's momentum continues to carry it through week after week, as it has held onto the top spot at the domestic box office five of those six weekends, regaining it after Alien: Romulus took it on its opening weekend. And that success has...

The 51st Telluride Film Festival officially kicked off Friday afternoon with the world premiere of Piece by Piece, an animated documentary about the innovative singer, songwriter and record producer Pharrell Williams, as the Patron Preview screening at the Werner Herzog Theatre. And the consensus of those in attendance was that the film is a truly original, outside-the-box, rollicking good time.
Directed by the great Oscar-winning documentarian Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom), the taut 93-minute film — at the request of Williams, who experiences sounds visually, something known as synesthesia — employs Lego animations to illustrate Williams’ journey from the projects of Virginia Beach to the heights of showbiz, and the bumps he has experienced along the way. (Neville had never previously worked with animation.)
Williams is not only the film’s subject — and opens up as never before during interviews with Neville in which they are both Lego-ized — but also one of its producers.

Known as Hermione, the brightest witch of her age, Emma Watson became an overnight sensation when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was released in 2001. But what most don’t know is that her journey to stardom was almost derailed by the very thing that made her famous.
As a child actor, Watson was thrust into the spotlight at just nine years old. While the Harry Potter movies catapulted her to global fame, it also took a toll on her mental health. The actress almost quit the industry while filming for the last few movies. It took a great deal of strength and her passion for the project for her to continue with it, despite feeling immensely burnt out.

Disney has made a mint over the past 20 years by remaking its classic animated films as live-action movies. While the reboots are often savaged by critics, the box-office success of Will Smith’s Aladdin, Emma Watson’s Beauty and the Beast and Jon Favreau’s Lion King guarantees the practice will continue for years to come. That’s not just speculation either — live-action versions of Moana, Lilo and Stitch and a Lion King sequel will all hit theaters by next year.
Live-action remakes of nostalgic childhood favorites are money in the bank, but despite the recent (relative) failures of Onward, Seeing Red and Luca, don’t expect Pixar to jump on that Disney bandwagon. As everyone knows, Disney has been having a great time turning its cherished animated classics into live-action pictures. And while some of these—like Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, and The Lion King—turned out to be enormous hits, others were regarded as flops that no one—not even Disney—wants to talk about. In spite of the opinions of the fans, the company is continuing with its live-action remakes of the same storylines that we have already seen.
One of the more controversial adaptations is the one that is planned and stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White. It has received criticism for a number of things, such as the casting of the lead actress, the CGI issues, and how the Dwarves are portrayed in the film. Others, as usual, took issue with the movie being accused of being woke.

If the idea of a live-action Minions movie makes you shudder, you’re not the only one.
Chris Renaud, who directed the first two and fourth films in the Despicable Me franchise, shot down the potential of a live-action treatment of the mischievous banana-loving helpers.
“God, I hope not,” Renaud said bluntly when asked by Film Hounds if there was a possibility of Illumination and Universal exploring live-action movies within the franchise. “That’s my answer.”
Studios like Disney have found box-office success in remaking animated classics, such as 2019’s The Lion King and Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Alice in Wonderland (2010), all of which have crossed the $1 billion box office threshold. Upcoming films like Mufasa: The Lion King and a live-action Moana hope to recreate that profitability.

Blu-ray collectors, rejoice. The Criterion Collection unveiled its November 2024 slate of releases this week, and the month looks like an embarrassment of riches for cinephiles looking to expand their physical media collections. The boutique distributor will be rolling out six new titles, several of which have long been coveted by Criterion fans: “Funny Girl,” “Paper Moon,” “Demon Pond,” and “Scarface,” along with new 4K editions of “Godzilla” and “Seven Samurai.”
William Wyler’s 1968 film adaptation of the musical “Funny Girl” marked Barbara Streisand’s big screen debut, turning the actress into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars overnight and earning her an Oscar for Best Actress on her first nomination. The film quickly became a cultural phenomenon and has remained one of the most popular (and quoted) movie musicals of all time.
Peter Bogdanovich’s “Paper Moon” is widely regarded as one of the greatest showcases for a child actor in film history.
