The opening night film for the second half of Guanajuato 2016 (the one that takes place in Guanajuato Capital) was Jorge Michel Grau’s 7:19, a drama set in the historic morning of 19 September, 1985, when Mexico City suffered a major earthquake that eventually caused the deaths of thousands of people. Grau’s film, based on a script that he wrote in collaboration with Alberto Chimal, happens in one location with only two characters, played by Demián Bichir and Héctor Bonilla. Bichir, who last year was part of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and currently is filming in Australia Alien: Covenant, as well as preparing his debut as director (Refugio), attended the world premiere of 7:19. He was also present because the festival pays tribute to...

Topher Grace’s backstage musical comedy One Shot is getting a Broadway vet in Taye Diggs. The singer-actor has joined the cast of the indie film, about a failed star turned stage manager (Grace) who must wrangle the eccentric cast and crew of a new production to save the show’s opening night. Isaac Rentz is directing from a script by Gerry De Leon and Greg Lisi; Grace, who’s currently in theaters in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, is also producing.
Diggs will play Malcolm, a flamboyant member of the production. Diggs of course got his start originating the character of Benny in 1996′s Tony-winning Rent, a role he reprised in 2005 when the musical was adapted into a film by Sony and Chris Columbus. By then he was well into a film and TV career with How Stella Got Her Groove Back, The Wood, The Best Man, and a run...

Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight has been hotly anticipated ever since the director threatened he might never even make it. But when Django Unchained brought along such oddball and exhilarating casting choices as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx and Jonah Hill, it was anyone’s guess who the director would work with next.
Now Deadline has exclusively confirmed that Channing Tatum and Damien Bichir have both joined a now finalized cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh (among the first confirmed), Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern (for those playing at home, that’s nine names, not eight). Tarantino announced he was officially moving forward with the project back in July, and since then Jennifer Lawrence was among the rumored names of potential casting choices.
Not only are Tatum and Bichir first timers in a Tarantino film, they were also absent among The Hateful Eight...

After earning an Oscar nomination for his acting work in the 2011 immigration tale, A Better Life, actor Demian Bichir proved himself to be a huge talent that mainstream audiences had been generally ignoring. Finally, after years of good work, the man got some recognition. It turns out he’s got ambitions beyond just taking that next step in his career as an actor, however, as Deadline is reporting that he’s now getting ready to direct his own feature, a romantic drama he also wrote called Refugio. The story of Refugio follows one particular character, named Refugio, who we meet through various phases in his life, with the overarching narrative being built on his search to find a long lost true love. Due to the jumps in the story’s timeline, the character is going to have to be played by multiple actors, and due to the fact that he grew up in the circus, Bichir...

He’s set his cast—Eva Longoria, Jose Angel Bichir, and Jorge Perugorria (Strawberries And Chocolate)—and production is just getting underway in Mexico City. The film follows the title character, a young dreamer who’s born in the circus and embarks on a search to find his long lost true love. That character will be played at various points in his life by a series of actors including Demian Bichir himself. The majority of screen time goes to Jose Angel Bichir, who is the director’s nephew. Longoria plays a horse acrobat who joins the circus in Mexico trying to heal a broken heart.
