Amazon and Eon are bringing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang back to the screen, and Matthew Warchus has signed up to direct the movie.

Eon Productions might be taking its time over wherever the James Bond saga is going next, but it’s got a different Ian Fleming-linked project up and running with Amazon MGM. Seems to be coming together a bit quicker, too.

As had been reported over the last week or so, a reimagined take on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is now heading towards the start line. Enda Walsh – who wrote Small Things Like These – is writing the screenplay for the new movie, and Ian Fleming’s novel will be the basis of the script.

We now learn too that things are sparking into life at speed. Matthew Warchus has signed on the dotted line to direct the movie, his first since Roald Dahl’s Matilda: The Musical a couple of years back.

Matthew Warchus (Matilda: The Musical) is set to direct the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang reimagining in the works from Amazon MGM Studios and Eon Productions, Amazon said Thursday.

Warchus will work from a script by Enda Walsh (Small Things Like These). The film, which Deadline told you about first, is in early stages of development and builds on Eon and Amazon MGM’s partnership on the James Bond franchise.

The first half of 2024 was pretty unkind to a lot of movies. The box office was on life support for most of that period and it all felt kind of bleak for anyone who pays attention to such things. The most depressing part was that quite a few great movies were being hung out to dry, including "The Fall Guy" and "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," among others. "Abigail," the latest horror movie from the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, was also a big disappointment theatrically. Fortunately though, it's finally finding its audience.

Comedy legend Mel Brooks and “Sex Education” star Asa Butterfield have joined the voice cast of the upcoming animated feature “The Land of Sometimes.”

Based on an original audiobook by Francesca Longrigg with a screenplay by Tony Nottage, “The Land of Sometimes” follows twins Alfie and Elise as they embark on adventures with mystical creatures after being transported to a magical island by the Wish Collector. The story explores themes of family and self-discovery.

Brooks and Butterfield join the previously revealed cast that includes Ewan McGregor (“Obi-Wan Kenobi”), Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”), Alisha Weir (“Matilda: The Musical”) and Jessica Henwick (“Glass Onion”). Much like fast-food chains make sure their menu items have just the right amount of sugar, salt and fat to make their products addictive, Netflix delivers action movies that feel as if they were created in a lab.

That doesn’t make them any less enjoyable as long as you recognize their artificiality and don’t mind signing on for it. The latest example is The Union, featuring a terrific cast led by Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, exotic locations, high-energy action sequences and sufficient doses of light-hearted humor to assure us that no one involved is taking the proceedings too seriously. It’s a pleasant enough diversion that you’ll likely instantly forget until the inevitable sequel comes along.

Over 50 years of British sci-fi television, the genre went from one golden age to another. The 1970s gave us bleakly devastating visions of the future, the 1980s gave us space invasions and comedy, the 1990s blended crime drama with sci-fi, and the 2000s remade shows from the 1970s and gave us Christopher Eccleston as two kinds of god.

Then came the 2010s, the birth of transatlantic co-productions and streaming. British sci-fi television was no longer the cheaper, shoddier counterpart to its US equivalent. The production values were glossy, the cast reached A-list heights, and the writing was what you’d expect from the most recent golden age of television. The age of cheap and cheerful sitcom-adjacent British science fiction was over… almost.

Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson (Luther) have been tapped to star in Down Cemetery Road, a thriller series for Apple TV+ based on the book from Gold Dagger Award-winning author Mick Herron.

The project comes to Apple following the streamer’s work with Herron on Slow Horses, its hugely popular espionage drama based on his Slough House novels. Thus far airing three seasons, the show starring Gary Oldman has garnered multiple BAFTA nominations and has been renewed through Season 5.

A writer on that series, Morwenna Banks, will serve as lead writer and exec producer of Down Cemetery Road. Elevated horror can be wonderful. Packed with subtext, visually stunning, often emotionally devastating with standout performances across the board, the subgenre is full of greats. But sometimes you just want exploding bodies.

If this is you, with Abigail you have come to the right place. From directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who are part of the collective called Radio Silence, this is a genre mashup which begins with an Oceans 11-style set up where the loot is a little girl our gang of professional criminals will be holding for ransom. But when they get to the vast mansion where she is to spend the night, something is very off, and things head into Dusk Til Dawn territory. This lot have very definitely come to the wrong place.

Radio Silence have been occupied with the last two Scream movies of late, but Abigail is much closer in tone to 2019s Ready or Not.

“Abigail” the movie isn’t altogether bad, but Abigail the pint-sized, pirouetting villain could use some serious … rehearsal. It’s hard to imagine a slasher movie about a vampire ballerina stuck in a “Usual Suspects” situation lacking bite. Their latest, Abigail, offers a reboot of 1936’s Dracula’s Daughter, a hypnotizing work that still stands as one of the best follow-ups to 1931’s Dracula. Mardi Gras is long over, and Halloween is still months away. But over the next four days in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Overlook Film Festival will celebrate the strange and unusual with a salute to horror that couldn’t be timelier.

“As we are talking, we have just seen two brand-new horror releases — ‘Immaculate’ and ‘Late Night with the Devil’ — have the highest openings for those distributors in their histories,” festival co-director Landon Zakheim told IndieWire. The Boiling Point TV series, The Banshees of Inisherin, Rye Lane and Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical are among the U.K. Casting Directors’ Guild Awards winners for 2024.

The sixth CDG Casting Awards, handed out Wednesday evening in London, also honored the likes of the theater play Dear England, a TV adaptation of which Sky has just unveiled.

Competing for the awards were productions that premiered between Sept. 1, 2022 and Dec. 31, 2023 and they were selected as nominees by members of the guild. The Casting Directors’ Guild represents casting directors in the film, television, theater and commercials industries in the U.K. and Ireland.

The cast for this one is absolutely stacked with talent, and the killer premise looks to have been executed by Radio Silence in the most fun – and bloody – way possible. It channels the spirit of their pre-Scream horror hit Ready or Not, and it promises to be a gory good time.

On April 5th, 20th Century Studios will be giving a theatrical release to The First Omen, which serves as a prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen (watch it Here). Two weeks later, on April 19th, Universal will be releasing their latest monster movie, a Dracula’s Daughter project called Abigail. Today, the Motion Picture Association ratings board has announced that they have given R ratings to both of these horror films. The First Omen has earned its R rating for violent content, grisly/disturbing images, and brief graphic nudity. Kathryn Newton of the slasher Freaky can be seen on the big screen this weekend in the newly released horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein, and in just another couple months, another genre project she worked on, the Universal Monsters project Abigail, will also be reaching theatres. While doing the press rounds for Lisa Frankenstein, Newton took a moment to hype up a scene we’ll be seeing in Abigail – and it’s actually a scene we get a glimpse of in the trailer embedded above. Radio Silence members Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the film, while the third member of the trio, Chad Villella, is a producer. Barbie, Saltburn and The Banshees of Inisherin are among the nominees at the UK’s sixth CDG Casting Awards.

Lucy Bevan, Olivia Grant (associate), Lucy Downes (assistant) are nominated in Best Casting in a Film for Barbie, with Kharmel Cochrane (Saltburn), Louise Kiley (Banshees of Inisherin), Kahleen Crawford, Carla Morris & Eliza Heslop (All of Us Strangers) and Jessie Frost (Triangle of Sadness) providing the competition.

Barbie, Saltburn, Sex Education and Ted Lasso are among the U.K. Casting Directors’ Guild Awards nominees for the 2024 edition of its honors.

The list of nominees for the CDG Casting Awards, now in its sixth year, also includes the likes of The Crown, Andor, Slow Horses and All of Us Strangers.

Nominated productions premiered between Sept. 1, 2022 and Dec. 31, 2023 and have been selected by members of the guild. The Casting Directors’ Guild represents casting directors in the film, television, theater and commercials industries in the U.K. and Ireland.

“We are delighted to be celebrating the sixth edition of our CDG Awards, recognizing the outstanding contributions of our members,” said CDG co-chairs Jessica Ronane and Rebecca Wright.

Celebrating “the incredible work achieved by casting teams across film, television, theater and commercials, the awards will be held on Feb. 21 in London in partnership with global casting platform Spotlight.

A Universal Monsters project is coming our way from Radio Silence, the filmmaking team that previously brought Ready or Not, Scream (2022), and Scream VI to the screen. Universal has scheduled an April 19, 2024 theatrical release date for the film, which was once going by the title Dracula’s Daughter. Now it’s going by the less informative title of Abigail, and Universal has unveiled both a trailer and a poster for the film! You can watch the trailer in the embed above and take a look at the poster at the bottom of this article.

Radio Silence members Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the film, while the third member of the trio, Chad Villella, is a producer. “Barbie” may have dominated the global box office in 2023 but when it comes to DVDs it turns out even the dextrous doll doesn’t stand a chance against…well, “Black Adam” as it turns out.

Despite disappointing at the box office, Dwayne Johnson’s mystic anti-hero has soared in the U.K.’s DVD charts, beating out a host of big name titles to secure the 2023 top spot with 80,000 units sold since it was released on Jan. 16, according to the British Association for Screen Entertainment (Base).

“Barbie,” meanwhile, sold a whopping 66,428 units in just two months, having been released on Oct. 23. Despite that, it failed to snag a spot in the top five.

The U.K. and Ireland box office revenue improved 8.3% from £980.5 million ($1.25 billion) in 2022 to £1.06 billion ($1.35 billion) in 2023, according to numbers released by Comscore. However, the number was 23.5% below the 2019 pre-pandemic total of £1.35 billion ($1.72 billion).

2023, the first full year since 2019 without any Covid-19 restrictions, marked the first post-pandemic year to achieve over £1 billion. Prior to the pandemic, annual box office had exceeded £1.3 billion in each of the five years through 2019.
