Behind the scenes at the talent development lab-meets-industry market.
The TorinoFilmLab (Tfl) can be hard to classify. On the one hand, it is a talent development initiative with an emphasis on art and craft; on the other, serious business is frequently done at the annual two-day meeting.
Filmmakers describe it in hallowed tones, referring to a “sacred” space, as sharp-eyed sales agents, producers and financiers attend in search of fresh projects to add to their market slates.

Drylongso (Cauleen Smith)
Writer-director Cauleen Smith made Drylongso when she was in college, 25 years ago, premiering at Sundance in 1998. She has gone on to create dozens of short films, art installations, and more experimental work, focused on similar themes of feminism, racial violence, and Black communities. The low-key hangout movie should have been a stepping stone for Smith, but, as with many other works by Black female filmmaking of the last half-century, it fell out of circulation. – Michael F. There’s always somebody new in the rat race trenches whose motto is ‘how to make friends and deceive people.’ Howard Duff’s photographer uses his camera to extort money from criminals while polishing his image as a grabber of Pulitzer-worthy news photos. But how long can he maintain his charade with mobsters Brian Donlevy and Lawrence Tierney, and how soon will his kissing partners Peggy Dow and Anne Vernon see through his lies? This efficient noir was the first feature directing job from the prolific Joe Pevney.

When Maren Morris released her 2018 pop breakthrough, “The Middle,” the song introduced one of her guiding philosophies with a simple question: “Why don’t you just meet me in the middle?”
Ever since debuting with 2015’s soulful singalong “My Church,” Morris has carved out her space as Nashville’s most thoughtful hitmaker, despite steering her career in seemingly unexpected directions: She’s the only pop singer who could just as credibly appear with Zedd at a Vegas nightclub and perform at the Newport Folk Festival alongside the Highwomen, her singer-songwriter supergroup.

The American movie business started in New Jersey.
Between 1893 and 1896 in West Orange, N.J., Thomas Edison was developing the early motion picture tech, inventing new ways to capture images in motion, and the result is that “you have the only fully operational motion picture studio facility in the world,” says Richard Koszarski, professor emeritus of English and cinema studies at Rutgers University, and expert in the early motion picture industry in New York and New Jersey.
His latest book on film history is “Keep ’Em in the East: Kazan, Kubrick, and the Postwar New York Film Renaissance.”
While companies were setting up production operations and offices in New York City, including Edison, “it’s very difficult to film in New York City. In those days, they didn’t have very good artificial lights,” says Koszarski. Making films required enormous skylights and other sources of natural light.

There are two things that die-hard Cowboy Bebop fans absolutely need from Netflix’s live-action reboot: a Corgi, and music by Yoko Kanno.

A bona fide film classic, George Stevens’ movie is less revered as an excellent adaptation of Theodore Dreiser than for its intense, almost hallucinatory romantic scenes between Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor. A guileless poor boy tries to succeed above his economic background and entangles himself between two very different women. I guess the Academy wasn’t ready to take the glamorous young MGM beauty seriously: both Clift and their co-star Shelley Winters received acting nominations, but not Liz. Stevens’ first ‘fifties picture is perhaps the most balanced of his ‘heavy’ and ‘important’ works, a tragedy that’s too deeply felt to be merely ponderous.

There’s something perversely fascinating about a film as aggressively off-putting as “Infamous,” a lovers-on-the-run crime drama that practically defies you to develop a rooting interest in its two dim-bulb lead characters. Writer-director Joshua Caldwell borrows freely and indiscriminately from several earlier and superior examples of its sub-genre — particularly “Gun Crazy,” “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Natural Born Killers” — while attempting to craft some kind of cautionary tale about the many and varied ways social media can turn the dangerously discontented into sociopathic celebrity-seekers. But as he indefatigably underscores the obvious while steadily escalating the violence, he does little to sustain the attention of his audience while taking an unconscionably long time to arrive at a thoroughly predictable conclusion.
Right at the start, Caldwell makes a serious mistake by borrowing a page from classic films noir and opening “Infamous” with a scene that reveals where everything will ultimately wind up. Maybe...

The first Who album in 13 years opens with a perfectly cynical Pete Townshend lyric: “I don’t care/I know you’re gonna hate this song.” But it’s kind of hard to hate something that feels so familiar. Roger Daltrey sings the lyric and the ones that follow, claiming the song isn’t “new” or “diverse,” with the same anger and conviction as the Who’s earliest music, recorded more than half a century ago, and the melody is almost identical to the opening “I don’t mind” of...

"Thai cuisine is so much more than what most people think. A wide range of regional cuisines from north to south, makes it nearly impossible to cover but the real fun is in trying to taste (and devour) as much as you can," Sayani said.
"There is something truly extraordinary about waking up with the ocean at your doorstep. I couldn't have found a more peaceful, and breathtaking home in Koh Samui. Nothing beats uninterrupted views and pool access," added the actress.
During her recent Thai vacation, Sayani stayed in Airbnb properties.
"My home in Bangkok, was Zen central. It was a peaceful haven, amidst the city. Loved the minimalist design and soothing pallet - less is always more," she said.

The past four seasons of The Detour have taken Nate Parker to nearly every corner of the world, but his strangest destination awaits him in Tuesday’s finale (TBS, 10:30/9:30c) as he prepares to walk down the aisle with his new bride.
TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek of Tuesday’s episode finds Nate attempting a dangerous balancing act, as he struggles to remain true to his family without raising the suspicions of his betrothed. But fear not, Robin has a plan to liberate her brood from its latest predicament — and as always, it’s completely insane.

Those Independence Day fireworks weren’t the only things entertaining us this week.
On the contrary, plenty of TV shows got our attention during the last seven days, thanks to the zingers and one-liners that populate our latest Quotes of the Week gallery.
This time around, we’ve got an uncomfortable moment (though there were many to pick from) between two of The Bachelorette‘s suitors, an extremely basic geography lesson from The Hills‘ Spencer, Roger Ailes’ passionate defense of Christmas on The Loudest Voice and a Detour character who’s totally twinning.

The work of a great, original, natural filmmaker, Wanda continues to confound viewers that don’t recognize honest human reality when they see it. A woman dispossessed, uprooted and adrift no longer has a self-definition, just a basic drive to subsist and find someone who values her. Morals? It’s hard enough just to survive. Director-actress Barbara Loden isn’t Wanda, yet she is — her film erases the distinctions between movies, theater and reality, something John Cassavetes never quite accomplished.

This is a big one, the restoration we long thought would never come. CineSavant tries to explain what makes Edgar G. Ulmer’s masterpiece uniquely memorable, how it works its Loser Noir magic, and why this particular restoration bodes well for a certain class of picture mired in murky rights issues. Meet Al Roberts, a hard luck case happy to bend your ear for an hour, explaining how Fate has Done Him Wrong. This Prc gem transcends Noir pessimism, because a sensible read forces us to conclude that Al is his own worst enemy, a self-made misery man. This hitch-hiking epic carries an extra added jolt: Ann Savage delivers what has to be the boldest, most caustic hell-to-pay performance of ‘forties Hollywood.

The Court of Appeals’ today rejected Department of Justice’s attempt to stop At&T acquiring Time Warner, paving the way for At&T to accelerate the implementation of its plans for WarnerMedia. The company already announced an upcoming streaming platform, which will include HBO Now. I hear WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey and his team also have been mulling a consolidation of the TV networks in one network group.
I hear the group would include all entertainment brands, including HBO, TNT, TBS and Cartoon Network. It is unclear whether CNN and WarnerMedia’s streaming service would be part of it though neither is a natural fit, and Stankey just installed a leadership of the direct-to-consumer platform, which includes TNT and TBS boss Kevin Reilly as Chief Creative Officer.

Steven Soderbergh wasn’t the first filmmaker to shoot an entire movie on an iPhone, but with his latest film “High Flying Bird” he’s proved yet again that it’s totally possible to have a professional, beautiful looking movie filmed with something that fits in your pocket. Here are some other feature films and a few shorts that have made use of Apple’s flagship smartphone.
“High Flying Bird” (2019)
Soderbergh shot “High Flying Bird” on an iPhone 8, which is now capable of filming in 4K resolution. The wealthy and bright realms of power atop expensive restaurants and skyscrapers for high-powered agents is far different than the mood Soderbergh was chasing on “Unsane,” but the film even has a sequence in which the action of a one-on-one basketball match isn’t captured on camera but by teenagers on, what else, their phones.

Is this any way to treat a lady? Lovely Nina Foch just wanted a job, but she instead becomes the fall-gal in a psychologically perverse plan to deny her very identity. Cult director Joseph H. Lewis makes deft use of cinematic suspense techniques to compel our involvement in a bizarre conspiracy: not just convincing a woman that she’s insane, but that she’s literally not herself.

"One of the most poignant and disturbing stories to reach the screen!" Janus Films has released a trailer for the new 4K restoration of this 1945 film noir classic, Detour, directed by filmmaker Edgar G. Ulmer. The Academy Film Archive helped restore this film, which has been available mostly on crappy public domain prints, and it first premiered at the TCM Festival in April. The story follows Tom Neal as a hitchhiker who ends up picking up another hitchhiker, a vicious femme fatale played by Ann Savage who blackmails him in order to maintain the upper hand as they head towards Los Angeles. "Working with no-name stars on a bargain-basement budget, B auteur Edgar G. Ulmer turned threadbare production values and seedy, low-rent atmosphere into indelible pulp poetry." It's always a good time to catch up with some vintage film noir. Here's the new 4K trailer (+ original poster) for Edgar G.

Filmmaker Edgar G. Ulmer was an incredibly prolific director for three decades, beginning in 1933, having completed 37 films. And right in the middle of that run, perhaps Ulmer’s most appreciated work is the 1945 noir film “Detour.” Selected among the first group of films to ever be worthy of special preservation by the Library of Congress, “Detour” is one of the finest examples of gritty film noir in history.

Following their impressively varied Main Slate section and Projections lineup, the full slate for Retrospective and Revivals at the 56th New York Film Festival have been announced. After last year’s Robert Mitchum retrospective, this year’s edition is split into three parts, paying tributing to the late Dan Talbot and Pierre Rissient, as well as spotlighting a trio of documentaries that delve into cinema history.
“For Pierre and Dan, two genuine heroes, everything to do with cinema was urgent. This year’s retrospective section pays tribute to both men, who passed away within six months of each other,” Nyff Director and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones said.
Talbot, founder of New Yorker Films and longtime director of Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, will be honored with personal favorites from Bernardo Bertolucci, Straub-Huillet, Nagisa Oshima, Jean-Luc Godard, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and more. Meanwhile, producer, publicist, distributor, curator, and cinema polymath Pierre Rissient...

Accidents will happen — but new albums won’t. That seems to have been Elvis Costello’s attitude in recent years, as his once-prolific recording career ground to a deliberate halt in favor of a determined focus on themed tours. But come October 12, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will return with “Look Now,” his first album of any kind in five years and first with his regular touring band, the Imposters, in a decade.
The unveiling of the 12-song collection’s contents coincides with the digital release of two preview tracks from the set: “Under Lime,” the album’s leadoff track, and “Unwanted Number,” a song he wrote for the 1996 Allison Anders movie “Grace of My Heart” but never committed to record until now. Both tracks are available immediately with pre-orders of “Look Now” or for streaming. “Unwanted Number” additionally has a lyric video (watch it below), for fans...

By her early thirties, Sandra Bullock was already weary from the whole, complicated looking-for-love process. She was seeing someone, "really sweet," she told Dennis Hensley in a 1996 interview for Detour, but getting to that point had been rough. "For a year I was by myself trying to date and I'm telling you dating was the worst experience I ever had," she confessed. "I seem to have attracted everyone whose intentions were not the best." It's not so much that they were after a slice of her growing fortune or her very much on-the-rise fame (though she said one suitor's ex-girlfriend sold a story claiming he was...

The Warner Archive comes through with a film noir gem that still has the power to make one’s skin crawl, as a pair of circus sharpshooters go on the lam, using their skills to pull off cheap robberies. The clammy feeling of being cut off from society, having no place to go, is expressed in near-existential terms. Peggy Cummins’ cheap tease Annie Laurie Starr promises John Dall’s Bart Tare eternal love, but what good are promises from a psycho?

Remember when Microsoft created a chatbot in 2016 that became “a Hitler-loving sex robot” after 24 hours online? This episode’s cold open sure does, using that particularly bad experiment in artificial intelligence as an opening parable for this anti-tech hour.
It’s date night for Mulder and Scully at a fancy high-tech sushi restaurant — so high-tech that Mulder and Scully are the only humans there, with the food being served and prepared by robots. When Mulder’s order comes out wrong, he gets annoyed, so he decides not to tip the sushi robots.

Style can be the star in Classic Noir, making a less prestigious film more entertaining than one with bigger names. Dennis O’Keefe, Claire Trevor and Marsha Hunt spin an excellent crime-love-murder triangle, for a road picture that’s one of the best Noirs not made by a big studio. Director Anthony Mann and cinematographer John Alton dial up the intensity for an experience as rich as the best pulp crime fiction.

The latest in the proud American tradition of road trip movies, Detour sees Tye Sheridan’s despondent Californian teen Harper bullied into a misguided mission to Las Vegas by the nefarious Johnny (Emory Cohen) and his wide-eyed accomplice Cherry (Bel Powley). Harper suspects his stepfather (Stephan Moyer) has had a hand in the accident that’s left his mother in a coma, and in a drunken moment of madness, hires Johnny to kill him. It’s a fairly formulaic plot that at first could be mistaken for Fargo in the desert – and although it lacks the nuance and brilliant dialogue found in the Coen Brother’s classic film, in Detour, director and writer Christopher Smith works hard way to breathe new life into a road oft-travelled, but there always feels like something’s off.
