In a landscape where South Indian cinema is reaching new heights, Ags Entertainment is poised to make its mark with its most ambitious project to date. “The Greatest of All Time” (“Goat”), starring megastar Vijay, is the company’s 25th production.

Archana Kalpathi, CEO of Chennai, Tamil Nadu-based, Ags Entertainment and creative producer of “Goat,” sat down with Variety to discuss this high-stakes venture, the company’s strategic vision, and her perspective on the current golden age of South Indian filmmaking.

The action thriller, directed by Venkat Prabhu (“Maanaadu”), features Vijay as an agent with Indian intelligence agency Raw (Research and Analysis Wing) entangled in a mission that spirals into a years-long saga. Thalapathy Vijay, who is gearing up for the release of his much-awaited film Leo on October 19, has already started shooting for his next project, tentatively titled Thalapathy 68. The film, directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by Ags Entertainment, marks the second collaboration of Vijay with the production house after the blockbuster Bigil (2019).

According to reports, the team of Thalapathy 68 has wrapped up the shoot of a song featuring Vijay, Prabhu Deva and Prashanth. The song is said to be a jolly friendship number, composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja and sung by him as well. The choreography for the song was handled by Raju Sundaram, who has worked with Vijay in several films.

Well-known Tamil film producer Suresh Kamatchi, who is known for having made blockbusters like ‘Maanaadu’, has explained why he chose to release his upcoming thriller film, ‘Jiivi 2’, directly on Ott instead of first opting for a theatrical release.

Participating in a press conference organised by the team of ‘Jiivi 2’, the sequel to the critically acclaimed thriller, Suresh Kamatchi said: “I must respond to the grievance that the film’s director Gopinath has expressed. Gopi, during his speech here, said that he felt bad that this film was releasing directly on Ott before being released in theatres.

“To be honest, all of us feel bad about the fact that this film is coming out only on Ott. To be frank, all of you know the kind of opening that small films get in theatres. Take for instance, the case of the Tamil film, ‘Maamanithan’. It did not evoke a desired response in theatres.

Sharing the 1.5-minute long teaser, the director wrote: “Life is a beautiful highway!(sic).” The teaser features glimpses from the world that Simbu’s character inhabits in the film. Set against a rural backdrop, the video hints that the film might narrate the story of a man hailing from a humble background, and becoming embroiled in interpersonal conflicts. The track ‘Marakkuma Nenjam’ (can the heart forget?), sung by Ar Rahman, can be heard in the background. However, the teaser of Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu does not reveal too much about the plot of the film.

The much anticipated Venom: Let There Be Carnage had an impressive first weekend out the gates, ringing up $6.5 million for Sony from 595 screens; an average of $10,886 per theatre.

Starring Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson, the superhero sequel is already on $US469 million worldwide – Australia being one of the last major markets to release the film. Not too shabby for a title that is said to have a $US110 million budget.

No Time To Die continued to perform in its third weekend, generating $3.9 million to advance to $26.5 million. The Bond title will easily overtake Godzilla vs. Kong, which finished on $27.9 million, to become the highest grossing film of 2021 so far.

Universal stablemate The Boss Baby: Family Business bowed to $1 million from 313 screens. With previews, the title is tracking at $1.5 million.
