Mortal Kombat 2 must be better than the 2021 reboot to succeed. Recent video game adaptations set a high bar for Mortal Kombat 2. Mortal Kombat 2 needs to stay faithful to the games while delivering a strong, cohesive story.
Mortal Kombat 2 needs to be better than its predecessors, but the challenge of adapting Mortal Kombat to the big screen just got way more difficult. The cast of Mortal Kombat 2 indicates that the upcoming sequel will be even closer to the source material in terms of characters and locations. Several Mortal Kombat characters from the video games have been confirmed for the sequel, including fan favorites that were missing from the first film such as Johnny Cage. Not much is known about Mortal Kombat 2s story, but the film is expected to fix the 2021 reboots mistakes.
Mortal Kombat (2021) had issues, such as the lack of Scorpion and the complete absence of Johnny Cage.

A myriad of sentiments converge when estranged siblings meet to unpack the weight of their father’s recent death in Spain’s Álex Montoya’s third feature “La Casa,” adapted from the Eisner-winning graphic novel by Paco Roca and sold by Latido Films.
The film, which bowed last night, figures in the official competition selection at this year’s Málaga Film Festival, his project “Lucas” having previously swept the fest’s Zonazine sidebar in 2020 – snagging best film, actor (Jorge Motos) and Audience Award plaudits.
Written by Montoya and Joana M. Ortueta, the project serves as a bittersweet rumination on regret, duty and the ties that bind us, proving a reflective journey through collective consciousness that’s held to task as the three work to rekindle a semblance of affection while sifting through hefty and lingering recollections.

Lionsgate Television Chairman Kevin Beggs says a transformed marketplace has taken shape in the wake of last year’s dual strikes and waves of cost-cutting affecting many TV players.
“They’re ordering fewer shows, and there’s a lot of focus on the budget levels of those shows and a little more financial discipline compared to the bake-off streaming wars that we saw leading up to the Covid era,” Beggs said during the company’s quarterly earnings call. “But there’s still a big demand for shows. They need originals. Originals build subs, drive advertising. But the bar is a little higher. They need them to be packaged. They need them to be noisy.”
Beggs put in a plug for Lionsgate’s strategy, saying the shift on the buy-side “really speaks to our strengths of putting together great packages and also delivering on various budget levels and shooting in tax-friendly...

Not every TV and film production will stop amid dual strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America. A host of projects stopped work after writers went on strike against media companies for better pay, streaming data transparency and protections against artificial intelligence (among other issues), and many more have paused since actors walked out on July 14.
There are exceptions, however. SAG-AFTRA’s strike rules allow for work on productions covered under different agreements, and the union can grant waivers or sign interim agreements with independent productions. Below is a list of TV shows and films that fall under those designations; this story will be updated as more productions earn waivers.

Spanish animation shows off its serious side in Cannes’ “Revelations!” showcase, dedicated to new shorts both by promising beginners and acclaimed filmmakers, such as Alberto Mielgo, who scored an Academy Award for “The Windshield Wiper.”
In June, four of the presented titles will also head to Annecy: María Lorenzo’s “Fashion Victims 2.0,” “Lost at Sea,” directed by Lucija Stojevic and Andrés Bartos, Pablo Río’s “Conej Steps Out” and Carla Pereira and Juanfran Jacinto’s “All Is Lost.”
“Animators, or just artists in general, tend to reflect on their times. Some of these films were born during the pandemic and yes, there is this melancholy to them. They are tackling multiple serious subjects,” says animation curator Carolina López Caballero.
That includes elderly suicide, like in the case of Diego Porral’s tender “Leopoldo from the Bar,” where a lonely man walks through ever-changing streets of Madrid accompanied by a massive pigeon.

American Idol season 21 had some extraordinary Hollywood Week duets, but six of them stand out as the best. In recent years, American Idol has replaced the notorious group round with the duets round. The partners, most of whom don't know each other very well, get very little rehearsal time before teaming up to sing a song together. They must learn the tune, work with a vocal coach, and create the choreography. These sessions often last until the middle of the night. The judges then decide whether to keep one or both of the contestants in the competition, or eliminate them.
During the American Idol season 21 duets round, the contestants had the opportunity to choose their own partners. Each duo selected a name for their pairing. The platinum ticket winners, Cam Amen, Kaylin Hedges, Elijah McCormick, and Tyson Venegas, earned the privilege of choosing first. Because of time constraints, not every...

In 1995, Alex de la Iglesia directed his second feature, “The Day of the Beast,” which marked a milestone in Spanish cinema, yoking full-on U.S. genre tropes – a bloody against-the-clock search for an Antichrist – with a bathetic but very grounded Spanish reality, featuring a downbeat boarding house, a local metalhead and the tawdry star of an occult-themed trash TV show.
The film opened the floodgates for other directors, weened on VHS binging, to mix U.S. and Spanish realities. Now nearly 30 years later, De la Iglesia is at it again. A showreel of movies and series made by Pokeepsie Films, the shingle he founded with Carolina Bang in 2009, dazzled at a Next from Spain showcase panel on Monday at Berlinale Series Market. Standouts included the sheer visual boldness of excerpts, their pop out tones, – such as in Eduardo Casanova’s lush pink in “La Pietá” – or mixture of gore, high-production values and comedy,...

Filmmaker Jonah Feingold has always been charmed by the idea of happily ever after. But as a hardened New Yorker, born and raised in Manhattan, he’s not naive enough to believe that’s always the way a love story ends.
In his first film, the modern romantic comedy “Dating and New York,” which follows two commitment-phobic millennials, he let audiences fall for the central couple (played by Jaboukie Young-White and Francesca Reale) for 90 minutes before breaking them up in the final seconds of the story. After the movie, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2021, was released by IFC Films to the world, he recalls getting a few angry emails about the ending.
“I don’t think, in a modern New York dating world, they would end up together,” Feingold, 32, says over coffee at Manhattan’s Marlton Hotel. “I was just trying to be honest.”

Netflix doesn’t publicise the titles it will remove – and users will only be alerted to something’s imminent removal if they happen to select the title in question.
But, with help from the team at What’s on Netflix, we’ve compiled the full list – and you can find the compilation of everything being added this month here.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are ready for the second act of their wedding celebration: the honeymoon. The couple, who recently tied the knot for a second time, were seen enjoying a night out around Italy's Lake Como on Aug. 23. For the occasion, the Marry Me star aptly donned a white dress and matching sandals, while the Tender Bar actor kept things casual in a blue sweater and cream-colored pants. At one point in the evening, Ben was seen holding his wife's hand as he helped her board a water taxi. The two then sat next to one another as the boat sped off into the night. The outing came just days after J.Lo and the Oscar winner exchanged vows at Ben's estate in Savannah,...

Think of Massachusetts as Hollywood Northeast. The state’s scenic, urban and historic settings suit all genres and appeal to filmmakers looking for authenticity, from the choppy waters of Martha’s Vineyard, where Bruce the shark terrorized beachgoers in the blockbuster thriller “Jaws,” to downtown Boston’s office buildings, where Ryan Reynolds’ “Free Guy” transformed the streetscapes.
“Film tourism is a happy benefit of productions,” says John Alzapiedi, assistant director of the Massachusetts Film Office. Although the film office does not track film tourism per se, and visitors may not initially consider the Bay state primarily as a film tourism destination — in comparison to production hubs like Los Angeles, New York or London — there are enough popular films and the long-running “Cheers” sitcom to draw attention. The Bull & Finch bar across from the Boston Commons, known universally as the “Cheers” bar because its façade is featured prominently in the sitcom’s opening credits,...

Banijay Iberia has struck a strategic partnership with Alex de la Iglesia which will see the high-profile Spanish writer-director and his partner at Pokeespsie Films, actor-producer Carolina Bang, create high-end original series and fiction for Banijay.
Pokeepsie Films credits include HBO Max hit “30 Coins,” co-written and directed by De La Iglesia. It is believed that the deal involves Banijay Iberia taking an equity investment in Pokeepsie.
No details of new projects are given. The deal, however, certainly sees Banijay Iberia, best known for its entertainment shows in Spain, reinforce still further its fiction output potential.
Owned by Banijay Iberia, Diagonal TV recent produced Netflix hit “Heirs to the Land,” while Banijay Iberia is also backing “Bosé,” one of ViacomCBS International Studios’ biggest biopics, about singer-songwriter Miguel Bosé.

Muscadine Bloodline know their fans have some expectations of the duo’s live shows. There are certain crowd-pleasing numbers they don’t dare omit.

A white woman living in a post-colonial African country refuses to abandon her family’s coffee plantation even as civil war brews around her. A derelict spaceship full of criminals sails across the stars towards a black hole, adrift between their histories on Earth and the oblivion that awaits them in the cosmos. A former officer in the French Foreign Legion remembers his time stationed in Djibouti, where his men lost themselves in the desert (and each other) while preparing for a fight that never came.
The people in Claire Denis movies are seldom in a hurry, but they’re often out of time. They’re drawn and quartered between the soft flesh of memory and the acrid metal of waking life — pulled apart by an artist whose films are as fluid as memories, and yet also mesmerized by the violence of inflexible social constructs that separate people against each other and themselves.

Mike Pence rebuked Donald Trump’s claims this week that, as vice president, he could’ve overturned the 2020 election, outright calling the twice impeached former President “wrong.” But for the hosts of “The View,” Pence’s words were 13 months too late.
“I heard this week that President Trump said I had the right to overturn the election. President Trump is wrong,” Pence said, while speaking to The Federalist Society on Friday. “I had no right to overturn the election. The presidency belongs to the American people and the American people alone. And frankly, there is no idea more on American than the notion than any one person could choose the American President.”
Host Sunny Hostin was unmoved by Pence’s remarks, particularly because they didn’t come when Trump was first baselessly calling for the election to be overturned. You can watch the full discussion on “The View” in the video above.

Get your sunglasses and fans ready: it's time for the Ball! Why are you surprised? They bring it to you every season.
For RuPaul's Drag Race Season 14 Episode 3, the Ball challenge came with a twist that doubled the fun and the fashion.
Some queens stole the show while others were out of style. Fashion is a cutthroat world; all is fair in love and designer.
Before we get to the Balls, "A Pair of Balls" dropped two huge twists that changed the name of the game.
Firstly, Orion Story and Daya Betty's return to the competition wasn't completely surprising. RuPaul's Drag Race hasn't eliminated a queen in the first round for several seasons now. The series wants to give the queens a chance to show their stuff and have the audience get to know them.
Plus, RuPaul's goodbye message to both queens somewhat teased that more was to come.

As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 85 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething. The most recent winner, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”), had just turned 32 when he prevailed. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2022 Oscars predictions for Best Supporting Actor.)
By comparison, Brad Pitt was 56 when he won in 2020 for his featured performance in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” He joined a lucky 13 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy.
Eleven more men were in their 60s when they won Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards. For eight fellows, it took till they were in their 70s to win while two (George Burns for “The Sunshine Boys” and Christopher Plummer for “Beginners”) were north...

Updated to include comments by Tim League of Alamo Drafthouse: Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch did what a glum arthouse market was waiting for, revved it up with a smashing three-day average. “If Wes builds it, they will come,” said an elated Searchlight Pictures after a long wait to get the film into theaters.
It opened in 14 markets and in a total of 52 theatres. Over the 3-day weekend, the film is estimated to gross $1.3 million for per screen average of at least $25K, which marks the highest of any film opening during the pandemic — topping even the most successful commercial products over the last 18 months and easily grabbing the specialty crown. Wide releases from The Black Widow to Shang-Chi to Venom to Bond to Dune have cleaned up but a revival had not taken flight at the arthouse yet.

Amazon Studios has released the official trailer and one-sheet poster for the coming-of-age drama film "The Tender Bar" from director George Clooney. While this marks the first time that Clooney has directed his fellow Batman thespian Ben Affleck, the two of them won Oscars together for producing Affleck's 2012 film "Argo." The film recently premiered at the London Film Festival where it so far has garnered mixed reviews.
Besides Affleck, the cast includes Tye Sheridan ("Ready Player One"), Emmy Award winner Christopher Lloyd ("Nobody"), Lily Rabe ("American Horror Story"), Max Martini ("Pacific Rim"), and introduces...

Amazon has released the first official trailer for “The Tender Bar,” the latest directorial effort from George Clooney. Based on the memoir by writer J.R. Moehringer, the movie stars Ben Affleck as a kind-hearted uncle who becomes a father figure to a young boy in a 1970s-set family drama. If the Paul Simon-scored trailer and the title are any indication, “The Tender Bar” appears packed with plenty of scenery-chewing performances and wholesome tears. With a theatrical release on December 17, Amazon could have a bona fide family holiday hit on its hands.
Here’s the official synopsis, per Amazon: “‘The Tender Bar’ tells the story of J.R. (Tye Sheridan), a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Affleck), is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures. Things have not settled down one bit in Virgin River.
But then, we never want them to, right?
While the hour quickly put us at ease about the state of Jack's survival on Virgin River Season 3 Episode 1, it's evident that "Who Shot Jack" will be a storyline that carries over the season.
Unfathomably, the hour opened with Jack's harrowing experience at the hospital while medical staff tried to save them, and he did appear to code at one point, but then we abruptly jumped ahead three weeks.
The patrons of Jack's Bar glumly sitting in the dark, seemingly to give the impression of melancholy only for the grand reveal of a surprise graduation party for Ricky was such a bizarre, frustrating choice.
While the season may revisit the night of the shooting and some of what came afterward, it felt as if we missed out on some critical or other...
