20 Days In Mariupol, the Oscar-winning Frontline/PBS and Associated Press documentary, was one of the big victors at the UK’s prestigious Grierson Awards on Wednesday.
20 Days In Mariupol won Best Current Affairs Documentary and Best Cinema Documentary at the event staged at London’s Roundhouse (full winners below).
Other winners included Me and the Voice in My Head, Channel 4’s documentary spotlighting Joe Tracini, a comedian who lives with Borderline Personality Disorder. As well as picking up Best Single Documentary, Tracini won Best Documentary Presenter.
The Grierson Awards has found itself at the crucible of industry debate about the Israel-Gaza conflict after removing Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia as a patron amid a backlash over social media posts considered to be antisemitic.

Septic Sauce, who supported Xbox’s multiplatform strategy that began earlier this year and argued that it was no longer just about selling consoles, seems to have changed its mind. The channel is now arguing the exact opposite, suggesting that keeping exclusives will lead to an increase in console sales.
Right or wrong, Septic Sauce’s Colt and Gaz are now arguing that Microsoft should have kept everything exclusive to the Xbox brand from the start, which they believe would have boosted console sales—even in Japan, the hometown of PlayStation.

Austin Butler recently made headlines for comments about his intense method acting approach while portraying Elvis Presley in the 2022 biopic film Elvis. While promoting his new villain role as Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part Two, Butler discussed toning down the method of acting this time. When discussing his acting approach for Dune: Part Two, Butler explained that he set clear boundaries this time around to avoid losing himself entirely in the role. He made a deliberate decision to protect the well-being of those around him between takes, recognizing that extreme method acting can negatively impact family, friends, and colleagues off-set.

A 56-year veteran of the Writers Guild of America West is becoming a Financial Core (Fi-Core) non-member over the union’s lack of official statement about Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel.
Dan Gordon, the writer of Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner and The Hurricane with Denzel Washington, is intending to inform the WGA West on Tuesday that he is renouncing his membership as a result of the guild’s silence on the Oct. 7 assault on the country that killed 1,400 people, many of them civilians.
“When you sit there and say there has not been an act of this magnitude, a tragedy of this magnitude befall Jewish people since Nazi Germany and you can’t find language to condemn it? And you’re writers? It’s staggering,” Gordon told The Hollywood Reporter. The scribe, who counts Highway to Heaven among his lengthy list of credits, said his adopted sister “just escaped...

For Korean cinema completists, Netflix’s forthcoming documentary Yellow Door: ’90s Lo-fi Film Club will arrive like manna from heaven when it launches worldwide on Oct. 27. Among the film’s many pleasures is the depiction of Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho’s previously unknown first film, a stop-motion animated short titled Looking for Paradise that he made in his home basement in 1992. But the documentary is ultimately about much more than that — it’s a love letter to movie connoisseurship itself.
Directed by noted documentarian and editor Lee Hyuk-rae (Sewing Sisters, 2020), Yellow Door takes viewers back to Seoul, South Korea in the early 1990s, when film clubs were popping up on local college campuses for the first time, providing young students with new cultural encounters and a platform to study the art of cinema. Much of today’s global boom in Korean film and television can be traced back to this formative,...

For many up-and-coming actors, joining SAG-AFTRA means better pay, health care, and access to higher-profile productions. Membership in the acting guild is more or less a professional necessity for most actors trying to build careers in Hollywood. However, there is an alternative path for those looking to avoid the restrictions that accompany the benefits of union membership. The largely unspoken alternate option “Fi-Core,” short for Financial Core, could serve performers looking to maximize their potential for work, save money on initiation fees, and insure themselves and their families without fully committing to the guild.
The alternative exists because of a 1963 Supreme Court ruling which allowed nonunion auto workers to access perks from union advancements, so long as they paid fees for the “core benefits” they received from General Motors. This term established a new category of employees, less governed by strict labor-union policies and more free to hover between self-selection and group representation.

When Peter “Star-Lord” Quill, while inspecting a murky extraterrestrial region, pressed play on Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love” in the first “Guardians of the Galaxy”, it would have been hard to imagine that James Gunn’s space opera would ultimately lead to something as sincere, poignant and kinda cornball as the trilogy-ending “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3″.
But as Gunn has showed over the course of these increasingly soupy sci-fi spectacles, the genetically spliced DNA of his chaotic, cartoonish cosmic vision is a double helix of opposites. Breezy ’70s rock papers over extreme violence. Cynical exteriors cloak sentimental emotions. A ragtag group of outcasts, more so than even the cast of “Fast and the Furious”, talk a lot about “family” and “friends.” Against the odds, “Come and get your love” has turned out to be a legit invitation.

San Francisco, Feb 1 (Ians) Google has confirmed that its cell network provider Google Fi suffered a data breach, which is likely related to T-Mobile’s recent security breach which exposed millions of customer records.
According to TechCrunch, Google Fi’s primary network provider informed the company that suspicious activity had been detected regarding a third-party support system containing a “limited amount” of customer data.
Last month, the US telecommunication provider T-Mobile has been hit again in a data breach, involving 37 million customers. This was the eighth time T-Mobile has been hacked since 2018.
The telecom company said in a US SEC filing that the “bad actor” started stealing the data, which includes “name, billing address, email, phone number, date of birth, T-Mobile account number and information such as the number of lines on the account and plan features,” since November 25, 2022.

Hollywood finally decided to get serious about the Korean War debacle with a pro-Army, anti-politics battle epic that blames our own negotiators as much as the enemy. Director Lewis Milestone and star Gregory Peck lead a full company of favorite actors in a gritty story of ugly combat in absurd conditions: die taking territory today, give it back to the enemy later.

For a second, it’s like 2005 has barged into the pub demanding respect. Richard Archer, singer with Staines’ indie rock massive Hard-Fi, arrives at a Thames-side Richmond boozer with his bright blue eyes flashing and the jaw-length hair he sported pre-pandemic shorn back to his classic indie bovver-boy cut. He’s as energised as he ever was when leading some of the most raucous gig scenes this writer saw that entire disrespected decade, when entire Academies would be bouncing right back to the (drunk dry) bar to clock-off clubland punk anthems “Hard To Beat” and “Living For The Weekend”. He was champion of the skint but shot-crazed, a roaring mouthpiece for the left-behind street stars of surveillance culture Britain.
The haircut is appropriate: it’s now 17 years since the band’s debut album Stars of CCTV ram-raided the UK charts, but Hard-Fi are undergoing a Semtex blast of popularity.

Last week’s episode of Ru Paul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race saw the mystery contestants being paired with some of the most iconic queens to ever appear on Drag Race. Sadly after being paired with the incredibly talented Gottmik, we saw Millie Von Sunshine being told to sashay away but before she could exit the building she had to reveal who was behind all the make-up. It turned out that it was none other than the amazing Jenna Ushkowitz who is probably best known for playing Tina in the hit musical series Glee! I do have to say it was quite sad to see Jenna leave the completion as her iconic lip-sync to “Dancing On My Own” will forever be one of the most memorable performances to come from this season but I do think the correct person was eliminated! On the other end of the competition, however, was...

In the last episode of Ru Paul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race, we saw Poppy Love continue her domination of the competition as she claimed her second win in two episodes! I personally, thoroughly enjoyed her performance of “Show Me How to Burlesque” from the iconic movie Burlesque where they showcase their incredible dance-based skills! On the other end of the completion was surprising Thirsty Von Trap and Electra Owl with the latter revealing herself to be the singer-songwriter, Taylor Dayne! In the first episode of this season, I was a bit disappointed in the fact that there was little to no theme that tied together each of the separate performances. There was some improvement last week when the idea of “dance” was used with the queens showing their own dance skills (specifically the aforementioned Poppy Love and Chic-Fi-Lay) but I did think that this theme was extremely...

New Delhi, Aug 20 (Ians) Google Pixel smartphone users were left in a lurch after downloading Android 13 as several of them were not able to use wireless charging after installing the latest operating system (Os).
The Pixel users wrote on discussion forum Reddit that wireless charging stopped working almost immediately after the Android 13 upgrade.
The problem appears to be affecting multiple Pixel models including the Pixel 6 series, but primarily the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 Xl, reports 9to5Google.
For Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owners, this could be an even bigger problem as they’re not allowed to roll back to Android 12 after updating to Android 13.
Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 owners can still roll back to Android 12.
Google was yet to issue a fix for this issue.
Those affected said that the problem happened irrespective of the charger being used.

Preparing for an upcoming flight isn’t just limited to packing your clothes and toiletries — have you thought about how you’re going to keep yourself entertained? The idealist in all of us might say we’re gonna read that book we’ve been putting off, but depending on the length of your flight, that may be easier said than done. If it’s on the longer side, it can be easy to get distracted and start to really feel the minutes crawling by.

San Francisco, May 27 (Ians) Google has collaborated with the US hospital chain Hca Healthcare to develop healthcare algorithms using patient records, the media reported.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Google will have access to patient records from Hca, which operates 181 hospitals and more than 2,000 healthcare sites in 21 states.
"Hca would consolidate and store with Google data from digital health records and internet-connected medical devices under the multi-year agreement," the report said on Wednesday.
Google will store anonymised data from patient health records and internet-connected medical devices.
That data will be used to build programmes that could inform medical decisions made by healthcare providers, the report mentioned.
Not just Google, Microsoft and Amazon are also working in the field to analyse patient data and create such AI/Ml-based programmes, to foray into the $3 trillion healthcare sector.

San Francisco, Dec 6 (Ians) Google Fi, a service by Google that provides telephone calls, SMS, and mobile broadband using cellular networks, Wi-Fi will stop activating non-VoLTE phones from January and it is offering a $100 credit to help customers upgrade their smartphones from the Fi store as well as activate it before December 31.
T-Mobile has already announced its own plans to phase out support for non-VoLTE phones starting in January 2021 and Google Fi, as a mobile virtual network operator (Mvno) that doesn't own its own wireless structure, has no choice but to follow suit. Fi works off of T-Mobile and US Cellular's networks, which means its customers will need to buy new phones, reports The Verge.
