Netflix have put out their annual lists of the most popular content on their streaming platform, marking what’s been another bumper year of material for the company. Split into the most popular general releases and various other categories, the names on the Us lists are fairly predictable, including Stranger Things, The Witcher and The Irishman, but also contain some surprisingly popular hits such as the Adam Sandler vehicle Murder Mystery.
The ratings are believed to be based on a Netflix metric using the number of individual accounts that have watched at least two minutes of their content in its first 28 days of release. For the breakdown of most popular content across all categories, Sandler’s popularity on the streamer is borne out by Murder Mystery topping the list, followed by the third season of Stranger Things, Ryan Reynolds’ 6 Underground, The Incredibles 2 and The Irishman.

“Stranger Things 3,” “The Witcher” and “The Umbrella Academy” were among the most popular series offered on Netflix in 2019, the streaming giant has confirmed.
Netflix has issued a series of top 10 “most popular” lists for its content in various genres, breaking down the movies, series, nonfiction programs, documentaries, comedy specials, kids and family and international releases that were among the most viewed in the U.S. market.
Netflix released rankings, but did not disclose actual viewership stats, in keeping with its longstanding policy. According to a Netflix spokeswoman, the rankings were determined not by total number of viewers, but by counting the total number of households to stream an individual title for at least two minutes during the first 28 days of its release. For those titles that have not yet been available for 28 days, the company used projections based on the early data to estimate a 28-day viewership number, a process...

Netflix has revealed a series of top 10 lists highlighting the streaming platform’s most-viewed films and television series of 2019 in the United States. Overall, the most popular release across any format was the comedy “Murder Mystery,” starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. The most popular television series was the third season of “Stranger Things,” and the most-viewed nonfiction release of the year was the self-care series “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.”
In the case of these lists, most “popular” is defined by anything actually released in 2019, and what was most viewed within 28 days of its initial launch on Netflix. The streamer also defines a viewer here as anyone who watched at least two minutes of these programs.

Netflix got in the end-of-year spirit Monday by sharing its own set of Top 10 lists for 2019, including its most popular titles that launched in the U.S. over the last 365 days, which is lead by the Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler comedy “Murder Mystery” and the third season of “Stranger Things.”
According to Netflix, its “most popular” domestic releases for the year are, in order, “Murder Mystery,” “Stranger Things 3,” “6 Underground,” “The Incredibles 2”, “The Irishman,” “The Witcher,” “Triple Frontier,” “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” “The Umbrella Academy” and “The Highwaymen.”
No viewership data was included with the list — which shouldn’t come as a complete shock, seeing as Netflix is famously selective about releasing numbers — but an individual with knowledge of the streaming service’s methodology tells TheWrap that the titles were ranked by the number of U.S. accounts that chose to watch at least two minutes of a series,...

Netflix is famously tight-lipped when it comes to revealing how many people are tuning in to its endless supply of movies and TV series, though the streaming giant does occasionally toot its own horn when one of its titles does especially well. Now the company is experimenting with a weekly list of its most-watched offerings in the UK, with nature docuseries “Our Planet” topping the first edition.
In a Twitter thread, the company announced that it will be releasing such lists on a weekly basis from here on out. To compile them, “we look at the most-watched individual season of a show, film or special (regardless of when it launched). ‘Watched’ means members finished at least 70% of one episode.”
“It’s a test as we want to make sure this information is useful for you,” Netflix added. “So we may tweak it in the weeks ahead. eg. we’re not including kids right now.

Deception and Being Human alum Lenora Crichlow has been cast opposite Hugh Laurie, Zach Woods, Suzy Nakamura, Rebecca Front, Josh Gad and Nikki Amuka-Bird in Armando Iannucci’s HBO space comedy pilot Avenue 5.
Created, written and executive produced by Iannucci, the tentatively titled project is set in the future, mostly in space. Crichlow will play Billie McEvoy, the second engineer. Young, outspoken, smart and career-focused but exhausted by responsibility, she loves building and fixing things but is terrified of dying in space.
The UK-born Crichlow most recently had a series-regular role last season on ABC’s Deception, in which Jack Cutmore-Scott played a superstar magician who worked for the FBI. It was canceled in May after one season. She also was the lead in the “White Bear” episode of Netflix/Channel 4’s Black Mirror and co-starred on Netflix’s Will Arnett-starring Flaked after breaking out on Channel 4’s Sugar Rush.

Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz are exiting Magical Elves, the production company behind hits such as Top Chef, Project Runway and Nailed It, which they co-founded in 2001. The Emmy-winning producers will remain partners and are expected to launch a new company as as independent producers. Meanwhile, Magical Elves will remain a part of Tinopolis USA, the U.S. subsidiary of UK-based Tinopolis Group, which acquired the company in 2014.
It is a common practice for the founders of a successful production company that sells to leave when the five-year post-acquisition period, during which they are required to stay on, is up, and they go on to launch a new company with the goal of building it and eventually selling it.
Their departure comes as the owners of Tinopolis, which owns a slew of British production companies including Question Time producer Mentorn and Mums Make Porn producer Firecracker Films, are once again keen to sell.

While the natural reaction to learning of (another) sequel could be to groan, when it comes to Wreck-It Ralph, well, we’re pretty excited, to be stepping back into the world of our favourite video game antagonist – and to celebrate the release of the film, we spoke to directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston.
Moore (left) is the more experienced of the duo, as Ralph Breaks the Internet marks the directorial debut for Johnston. We all discuss the sheer brilliance of John C. Reilly, who again voices the title role, and what he brings to the character from a human perspective, as the film graciously tackles the notion of toxic masculinity, celebrating a protagonist not afraid to explore his more vulnerable side.
With one of the film’s best scene featuring all of our favourite Disney princesses, we asked about how much fun the duo had affectionately ridiculing the old-fashioned tropes of Disney storytelling.

I knew things weren’t going to go as hoped when the lack of a short film before Ralph Breaks the Internet brought a filmed introduction by three of its middle-aged, male creators instead. They pretend as though they’re personally beaming themselves into our theater to share their gratitude with fake buffering circles freezing frames every now and then as one tells us the hardest part of making this sequel was fitting everything they love about the internet in. It’s spoken with a transparent insecurity boomers have when speaking about trendy topics they know superficially. But you go with it because, why not? Well the answer arrives when another asks, “How do I turn this off?” Let’s just say these dad joke-spouting, contradictory “tech wizards” set the stage perfectly.
The reason I loved Wreck-It Ralph (and still do after numerous re-watches) is because it didn’t do what I thought it would.

Why the next thing you’ll tell me is that the Blockbuster Video is…uh, oh. That sums up the challenge for the folks at the Walt Disney Animation Studios. In 2010 they finally had a hit that almost rivaled their friendly (same company by then) neighbor at Pixar, a modern attitude take on the Rapunzel fairy tale called Tangled. And two years later Wdas had an even bigger hit with Wreck-it Ralph a zany look at what goes on after hours at a video arcade, a clever mix of Toy Story and Who Framed Roger Rabbit (lots of cameos from game superstars from several companies). Six years later Wdas decides to finally produce a...

It’s a vast dystopic wasteland and a bright neon cosmopolis, one that puts Tokyo and Philip K. Dick’s Hell Ay and Times Square on New Year’s Eve to shame. It’s a seedy place, where a troll lurks underneath every other bridge and within the majority of your mentions. It’s busy — too busy, in fact, a 24-7 bazaar that’s constantly bustling and overwhelming. Some folks give you helpful advice; others are straight-up stranger-danger personified. (Do not go over to the “dark” side.) Everyone wants to sell you something.

She’d never ask for anyone to actually call her by the title, but the sassy star of “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is, in fact, a Disney princess. When Vanellope von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman) was introduced in the 2012 Disney hit “Wreck-It Ralph,” she was presented as a sassy racer in the candy-coated Sugar Rush arcade game, a misanthropic glitch who doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of her peppy competitors. By the end of the popular animated feature, Vanellope was crowned a winner, a best friend, and an actual princess.
In the world of Disney, that princess moniker doesn’t come lightly, and anointing the sassy Vanellope means she joins classic characters such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Pocahontas. Fittingly, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” puts Vanellope at the center of its story, but it’s not the standard Disney Princess narrative. Instead, the film centers its...

Plot: Things are going pretty well for Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly). No longer faced with an existential crisis, he’s back to loving his job, hanging out in his free time with his new found Bff, Vanellope (Sarah Silverman). At the end of 2012’s “Wreck-It Ralph,” Ralph (John C. Reilly), a brutish videogame goliath, found friendship and acceptance in the form of Vanellope (Sarah Silverman), a spritely princess from a neighboring kart racer called “Sugar Rush.” He was a character in crisis and in finding that acceptance, he learned to be okay with who he was. The question of where this story could go (and where you could put Ralph to throw him into existential crisis once more) was answered with a single destination: The Internet.

The end of the 2012 Disney hit “Wreck-It Ralph” reveals that sarcastic Sugar Rush racer Vanellope von Schweetz is the game’s long-lost princess-turned-president, marking it as one of Disney’s more offbeat princess origin stories. Vanellope isn’t Ariel or Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty, but she’s got some serious Disney Princess DNA, and “Ralph Breaks the Internet” turns its attentions to her (again voiced by Sarah Silverman) as she continues her path to candy-colored maturity. It’s a familiar journey from the Disney canon, but this one is bolstered by a loving relationship with her dedicated best pal Ralph (John C. Reilly), the introduction of an inventive new world, and good-natured digs at the kind of princess-centric stories that came before.
While the first “Ralph” film centered on Ralph’s own liberation from video game villain to legitimate hero, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” turns its attentions to Vanellope’s next big step.

After going from 8-bit zero to arcade hero during his original outing, Wreck-It Ralph levels up in a big way with “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” an ambitious, all-around-satisfying sequel to Walt Disney Animation’s wonderfully outside-the-box smash that ranks among the studio’s very best toons: It’s a poignant buddy movie that’s sincere in all the right places but knows better than to take itself too seriously. While the 2012 project was an inspired example of easily expandable world-building, this more-clever-than-expected follow-up skips the obvious next step — simply exploring the other games that share the same power strip — and sets out to conquer the relative vastness of cyberspace instead.
That’s a lofty goal for any sequel, further complicated by the fact that reformed bad guy Ralph (voiced by lovable lug John C. Reilly) has made friends with fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), which calls for an all-new dynamic.

Ralph Breaks the Internet proves that even 8-bit characters can grow and develop.
It’s strange to think that Wreck-It Ralph came out before Frozen, but it did; the former arrived in 2012, while the latter emerged a year later. Frozen was a juggernaut that placed Disney Animation Studios on the same level as its sister studio, Pixar, but Wreck-It Ralph was a solid offering that kept Disney Animation’s momentum going after the triumph of Tangled two years earlier. Ralph’s deft and witty blend of adult nostalgia for 1980s 8-bit arcade video games, combined with a wonderful visual palette and a story that could enrapture little ones, proved to be a unique and satisfying combination.
After six years we at last have a sequel to Wreck-It Ralph, and it’s gratifying to say that Ralph Breaks the Internet, while having the slight whiff of corporate obligation around it, is an entertaining,...

Disney has released a new clip from Ralph Breaks The Internet. The clip features a fun scene where Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) come across the Internet search bar, which is where they meet a new character by the name of KnowsMore, who is voiced by Alan Tudyk.
I also included a new promo spot for the film called “Happy Birthday, Internet” and as you might suspect from the title, it celebrates the day the Internet was born, October 29th, 1969, which also happens to also be the the first time that the Internet crashed. It’s a brief but amusing history lesson.

Netflix faced questions about the shifting media landscape during its earnings release, held a week after WarnerMedia announced plans to launch a competing service in a move that follows in the digital footsteps of The Walt Disney Co.
One issue, in particular, loomed large for Wall Street: What will Netflix do to fill the hole in its content library, once Disney and WarnerMedia claw back their movies and television shows for their own on-demand services?
“Content like Friends is likely to disappear from Netflix in 2019 as WarnerMedia launches its own Svod service,” wrote Btig media analyst Rich Greenfield of Btig, in an analyst note released ahead of the company’s earnings interview. “As more content creators launch their own Svod services, how should investors think about the impact of losing high-profile syndicated content?”
The loss of Friends is, in streaming services as in life, would be a blow.

Netflix flooded its U.S. streaming service with an all-time high tonnage of original TV shows and movies in the third quarter of 2018 – a positive signal that the No. 1 subscription-video service will hit its customer-acquisition targets, according to a new report from Wall Street firm Cowen & Co.
The company bowed nearly 676 hours of originals for the quarter ended Sept. 30, which is equivalent to about 28 full days. That’s more than double the amount of Netflix originals launched in Q3 2017 (289 hours) and up 50% from 452 hours in Q2 2018, Cowen & Co. estimated. The relative quality of that glut of new content is debatable, but Netflix’s track record shows that greater amounts of exclusive programming leads to higher sub growth and lower churn.
In the most recent quarter, the company released new seasons of “Orange Is the New Black,” “Marvel’s Iron Fist” and “Bojack Horseman,” along with controversial drama “Insatiable” and Cary Fukunaga-directed psychological thriller “Maniac,...

Turns out that Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (November 21) has as much in common with “Zootopia” as its predecessor, “Wreck-It Ralph,” in addressing inclusion, diversity, and change.
After Ralph (John C. Reilly) bonds with fellow misfit Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) at the end of “Wreck-It Ralph,” their friendship nearly breaks when plugging into the internet in the first Disney Animation sequel since the studio regained its prowess more than a decade ago.
“It’s friendship affected by change,” said director Rich Moore. “Change is constant, which you can count on. Nothing stays the same forever. But doesn’t mean that a friendship can’t resolve because of different points of view or different dreams. In fact, good friendships can become better because of change.”
Six years after altering his role from villain to hero, Ralph and Vanellope must save her arcade game, “Sugar Rush,” from being shut down when its obsolete steering wheel breaks.

While most of the trailers for Ralph Breaks the Internet have focused on the characters' hilarious interactions with the World Wide Web, this morning's trailer does more to show off some more of the plot and new characters, while still being a lot of fun.

Gal Gadot is ready to break the internet.
The “Wonder Woman” star has joined the voice cast of Disney’s animated “Ralph Breaks the Internet.”
The “Fast & Furious” actress revealed Friday on Instagram that she’s getting back behind the wheel and will be playing street racer Shank in the sequel to “Wreck-It Ralph.” It marks her debut role in a Disney animated movie.
“Shank is amazing at driving cars and has this bad-girl vibe to her,” she said in a statement. “But as the movie goes on, you realize how fun, wise, and warm she really is on the inside, which is what I like most about her.”
The video Gadot posted, along with the image of Shank, teases the plot of the movie, which involves the online racing game “Slaughter Race.”
“She is the coolest character in this world of ‘Slaughter Race,'” director Rich Moore said.

The Immortal Warrior herself, Gal Gadot, is entering the hyper-competitive world of online racing for Ralph Breaks the Internet, in which she’ll play the tough-as-nails Shank.
The Wonder Woman 1984 star took to Twitter earlier today to announce her involvement in Disney’s animated sequel, along with a sneak peek at her character doing what she does best: speeding down the digital highways of Slaughter Race.
Described as something of a big sister to the wide-eyed Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), Gadot is another exciting addition to the ensemble cast of Ralph Breaks the Internet, which takes place a full six years after its predecessor and thrusts Wreck-It Ralph into the midst of the world wide web.
Here’s what the DC actress had to say over on Twitter:
I’m so excited to finally announce that I am playing a character named Shank in Disney’s #RalphBreaksTheInternet hitting theaters this November!

Disney has released a new image from Ralph Breaks The Internet and it features Vanellope hanging out with the Disney princesses and as you can see the princesses are all sporting new more comfortable outfits. In fact, it's Vanellope who brings the new clothes into the princesses lives and she looks very pleased with herself.
When talking about her character, Sarah Silverman told EW:
"I’m very proud of my character being a Disney princess with a human waist. I love that she is a princess but wears, like, a hoodie, and she inspires them all to wear comfortable clothes. It didn’t really cross my mind that I’m a Disney princess — like, that I’m canon— until we all met this year, and I got a little choked up. It’s corny, I know, but I was like, ‘Oh s—t, right. I’m this Jewish, comfortable-clothes-wearing Disney princess.
