After a very intense and controversial Oscars season, Netflix scooped up three awards at the 2025 97th Academy Awards. That brings Netflix’s total Oscar count up to 26 statues. Here’s a full breakdown of Netflix’s past efforts at the Academy Awards and the full list of 73 nominated titles.
Netflix takes the Oscars seriously. They continue to have a massive team working on awards campaigning. Insider reported in 2022 that Netflix had a 40-person awards operation along with 15 consultants who spread their time working on campaigns for Emmys and, of course, the Oscars. Despite that massive spending and resource allocation, it’s still yet to win some of the biggest prizes of the night when some of its close rivals have. Apple TV+ notably scored Best Picture at the 2022 Oscars, and Prime Video has scooped some top awards, too.

Josh Gordon and Will Speck’s Distant (2024) joins the ranks of schlocky outer-space dramas that are as generic, predictable, trope-y as it gets. Random creatures are mounted as assailants. They are predators and that throughline is taken to supply the narrative with blasts of action and heightened chase sequences. The drama is dialled up, moments of stillness and companionship are shattered by the invasion of massive threats. Surprise at the threat is followed by attempts to outdo the stalking monster. Life, endangered as it is, becomes doubly imperilled. Escape is evasive. Hope seems forsaken, yet the two characters persist.
The lesson here is solidarity and allyship, a chance connection that rips out peril. Hope shines brighter in this companionship, despite physical separateness. The emotional need for anchorage trumps obstacles, looming danger. Backstories peep out in scattered mini-flashbacks. Trauma and loss are entrenched deep. Nevertheless, people fight back, latching onto whatever is available.

After being announced in the late 2010s and then filmed in 2020, the majority of the world still hasn't seen Distant, and many are wondering where they can legally watch the movie.
Starring Anthony Ramos (set to share the screen with one of 17 MCU heroes being brought back in 2025), Naomi Scott, and Zachary Quinto, Distant is an American sci-fi film that follows an asteroid miner as he gets stranded on an alien planet and has to try to save his crew member.
The flick was produced by DreamWorks Pictures and distributed by Universal, but its release has gone through some issues, to say the least.

Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, Distant is a sci-fi drama that revolves around asteroid miner Andy Ramirez and all the challenges he faces when his spaceship crash-lands on an alien planet. With an overdone premise and alien creatures that look somewhat like the demogorgons from Netflix’s Stranger Things, Distant doesn’t bring anything new to the table.
Andy Ramirez was one of the two hundred miners hired by McCluskey Hawthorne Corporation. The journey to the asteroid was supposed to take over four years but was suddenly disrupted when an asteroid collided with the mining vessel ‘Borealis.’ Andy woke up in his pod when the alarms suddenly went off. His AI assistant prepared him for an immediate landing. He landed on an alien planet/asteroid, and his pod started to malfunction. According to his AI assistant, he had to step out immediately. As he tried to wriggle out of his pod,...

Uzak Movie Review: Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Poetic Study of Loneliness and Nihilism in the Modern Society

“Loneliness has followed me my whole life, everywhere. In bars, in cars, on sidewalks, in stores—everywhere. There’s no escape. I’m God’s lonely man.” These are the words of Travis Bickle from Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver.” They also resonate deeply with the two central characters in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “Uzak”. While Travis, an insomniac loner who struggles with relationships and human interactions, turns to violence as a last resort to assert his existence, the characters in “Uzak” are so consumed by their loneliness that they refuse even to acknowledge it. As a result, they become apathetic, resentful, and even nihilistic, placing disproportionate value on fleeting pleasures like smoking, watching pornography, or aimlessly wandering, rather than attempting to form meaningful human connections.
“Uzak” tells the story of two pivotal characters: Yusuf, an illiterate and shy villager who moves to Istanbul to find work in a dockyard, and Mahmut,...

Distant screened at Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival
The film begins with a fight between a husband and a wife, with the man calling his wife a whore for working at a hair salon for men, and she insisting she is not going to quit. The man then leaves the house, leaving 13-year-old Rohith, who listened to the whole thing, rather aggravated. The next day, his efforts to convince his dad to come home prove futile, and soon he tries something different, sabotaging his mother’s work any way he can, despite her efforts to prevent him from doing so.

Si se puede! Amazon MGM Studios is ready to strap on its tool belt after winning a bidding war for Mattel’s animated Bob the Builder movie! While the ink has yet to dry, we hear Amazon beat Dreamworks Animation and others looking to lay the foundation of an ambitious rework of Bob, the beloved general contractor with a passion for construction and learning. The Bob the Builder movie hails from Jennifer Lopez’s production studio, Nuyorican Productions, and ShadowMachine, the animation house behind Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, Tuca & Bertie, Moral Orel, Robot Chicken, and more.
The project reimagines Bob the Builder with Anthony Ramos in the lead role. Bob’s latest adventure is set in Puerto Rico. The story celebrates the resilience and spirit of Latino culture, and the new setting offers much to Bob’s outreach and influence.

Cohen and Halberg directed Screen Gems’ Tarot this past spring which grossed $50M off an $8M production cost — 62% of that from offshore.
The twosome were the first selection for Screen Gems’ directing incubator, where they wrote, directed, and produced their short film / proof of concept, Blink, for the Sony label. This led to Tarot which they wrote and directed.
They most recently closed a deal to write and direct You Take Care Now based on their original short story for Universal with Atomic Monster and Blumhouse producing.
Their original spec script Distant was bought and made by Amblin and is currently awaiting a 2024 release; Will Speck and Josh Gordon directed with Anthony Ramos and Naomi Scott starring.

Distant are a band that are very open about their love of all things nerdy. From video games to anime, the band will leave little hints throughout their conceptual albums that keen listeners can draw back to some of their favorite franchises. Vocalist Alan Grnja has helped to drive the anime inclusion into the band’s aesthetic since he joined. I spoke with Alan to learn more about how he is able to merge the kawaii with the 'core. Have you had any time in your busy touring schedule over the last 18 months to catch up on anime? Alan Grnja : 100 percent. Especially on the drives between states. That’s when I have time to throw things on the screen. Like I finished and caught up with the past three anime seasons on the last run. That is incredible. The possibility of a season 3 remains unknown for Speck and Gordon, but the season 2 finale sets up potential plotlines for the future.
The world of Hulu's Hit-Monkey is getting even crazier and more deadly than before in season 2. Based on Daniel Way and Dalibor Talaji's Marvel character of the same name, the next chapter of the animated show finds the titular assassin and his ghost mentor, Bryce, venturing to New York City after escaping from Tokyo with the help of Haruka. Chicago-based, China-born writer, director, producer and visual artist Zhengfan Yang knows what it feels like to be a stranger in a strange land — but also back home. If there is such a thing as “home.” His episodic feature Stranger, which had its world premiere in the Proxima competition section of the 58th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff), explores this along with such themes as loneliness and identity. Each episode is set in a different hotel room, “a place where everybody is a stranger.”
The result: seven scenes that, as Kviff organizers put it, tell “absurd, darkly humorous, poignant, and mysterious stories set in a seemingly confined space that nevertheless opens up new and surprising dimensions.”
After graduating from law school, Yang started making films with Shengze Zhu (Present. Perfect), establishing production company Burn the Film with her. Yang has made four feature-length films – Distant (2013, Locarno Film...

Rick Berman's story change transformed Star Trek: Voyager's "Distant Origin" into a great episode, thanks to a "Galileo" figure. "Distant Origin" is classic Star Trek, holding similarities with Tng's best episodes. Berman's influence brought Tng features to Voyager, enhancing the series' quality and storylines.
A great episode from Star Trek: Voyager season 3 was saved from obscurity by Rick Berman, according to writer Joe Menosky. Rick Berman became Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's right-hand man at the beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and ascended to the role of franchise leader after Roddenberry passed away during Tng's run. Berman was responsible for shepherding the Star Trek timeline through its most popular era in the 1990s and early 2000s, and this included being an executive producer on all seven seasons of Voyager.

Universal is getting deeper into the Steven Spielberg business and will be carrying more of the weight of the movies he produces.
Universal and Spielberg’s Amblin Partners are forging a new pact under a multi-year deal, but as part of the new arrangement, Amblin Partners will no longer fully finance its own movies that it produces for Universal, and Universal Pictures will be providing some of the backing for Amblin Partners movies made under the deal.
Amblin will continue to produce other movies with rival studios, such as “West Side Story” at 20th Century or “Ready Player One” at Warner Bros., but Universal will have first-look status on all of Amblin’s theatrical projects.
The idea is to give the company “more creative and financial flexibility,” according to the press release announcing the deal. That should mean more opportunities for grown-up oriented projects, like “Green Book” and “1917” that were both released by Universal,...

Nuri Bilge Ceylan likes to take his time. The Turkish director is one of the greatest living practitioners of slow cinema. The filmmaking ethos — pioneered by Russian auteur Andrei Tarkovsky and taken up by the likes of Theo Angelopoulos, Albert Serra, Béla Tarr, Kelly Reichardt and Lav Diaz — eschews the rapid editing and relentless nonstop forward-driving plots of the Hollywood blockbuster (looking at you, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) for a more contemplative, metaphysical approach.

Cannes official competition has grandfathered-in filmmakers—Pedro Almodóvar, the Dardennes, Arnaud Desplechin—who will keep being included no matter what, and Nuri Bilge Ceylan, whose every feature since 2002’s Distant has premiered here, is definitely among them. After receiving the Grand Prix for 2011’s Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Ceylan introduced his “three-plus-hours only” mode with 2014’s Winter Sleep and 2018’s The Wild Pear Tree, and reception was what you might call “respectfully muted.” Outside the festival, his reputation seems to have fallen off: it’s a long way from the 2007 Coen brothers short World Cinema, in which a cowboy played by Josh Brolin goes to see […]

In most years, September has the lowest box-office grosses of any month and 2022 will be no different. What is different this year: September could be the first month of 2022 that might be worse than 2021.
Our pessimistic August projection was 550 million; all in, this month will gross about 470 million. Our estimate for September 2022 is less than 300 million; September 2021 was 367 million.
Blame the lack of product: There will be four titles from major studios, one from A24, a handful from smaller companies; none are expected to do major business. Two of those studio titles — “Bros” from Universal and Paramount’s “Smile” — open September 30, so any impact will have to wait for October.
A couple of date changes made back in June might have had an impact: Lionsgate’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is now April 28 and Universal Pictures’ sci-fi-action film “Distant” moved to January 27. Both were originally dated for...

Following The Wild Pear Tree, Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan has been working on his next feature for some time and is poised for a return to Cannes Film Festival next year. In the meantime, the opportunity to revisit one of his most acclaimed films has arrived. Distant, which premiered 20 years ago this year in Turkey followed by a stop at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival where it won both the Grand Pix and Best Actor for Muzaffer Özdemir and Mehmet Emin Toprak, is now returning to theaters.
The film––which follows a divorced photographer’s life of solitary routine beging interrupted when a distant cousin from his remote village comes to stay in his tiny Istanbul apartment, quickly outstaying his welcome––will get a re-release in select theaters across the U.S. beginning at May 20 at Film Forum. Ahead of the run, Big World Pictures has debuted a trailer.

Universal is transporting next year’s DreamWorks Pictures’ sci-fi movie Distant from March 11 to September 16.
Distant leaves behind Disney/Pixar’s Turning Red on its old date and now will face off against Lionsgate’s family movie White Bird: A Wonder Story and Sony’s untitled George Foreman biopic on its new date.
The pic directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck follows asteroid miner Andy (Anthony Ramos), who, after crash-landing on an alien planet, must make his way across the harsh terrain, running out of oxygen and hunted by strange creatures, to the only other survivor. His AI survival suit (voiced by Zachary Quinto of the Star Trek films) isn’t helping either. Andy discovers a fellow crewmember, Naomi (Naomi Scott), however, she too is trapped inside her escape pod and he might not have enough oxygen to make it to her.
Spenser Cohen (Extinction) wrote the screenplay. Distant is produced by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones,...
