A Ghost Story (2017)
.....critical acclaimed?
Well, obviously the critics enjoy watching paint dry and grass grow. I would say this was the worst movie I've seen in my life. Literally nothing happens for 90 minutes. I have no idea why it was rated R, should be PG as again, nothing happens. Outside of the party scene at the house there are many 150 words of dialog in the entire movie. The acting is bad for the most part, I mean anyone can sit/stand in a white sheet and do nothing for 90 minutes. How this movie got made I don't know. Why anyone would want to be in this movie I don't know. What reason does anyone have to watch this once...I don't know.
Hubie Halloween (2020)
Fun light hearted original comedy
Need something fun to watch that isn't a direct rehash or scary movie? Hubie Halloween hits the spot even for us big kids who don't need every movie to be rated R. Plenty of star actor power throughout the film with so many famous comedians too. Hodge Podge of Halloween stories, Scooby-Doo and Adam Sandler characters make this enjoyable for all ages and comedy fans. I can enjoy this and Ted for different reasons....... Wolfman jack would be proud of Shaquille O'Neal and friends for keeping his legacy alive. Now go have dinner with your family, eat your candy and drink your wine, the night is young.
A Very Good Girl (2023)
Went with my Filipino wife
I don't regularly watch chich flicks or even Tagalog films, so for me this was a fun change of pace. Which also means this movie is pretty good and well done. The editing is very modern for today's generation which has short attention spans. The acting by the 2 lead women is fantastic and most of the women characters are well developed. I won't say the film is anti-male, but they purposely made the few male characters into bad generic roles. Despite the long running time, the movie is fast paced and has a deep story that is both fun to watch and keeps you interested in the back story. You really get to know all the characters hearts and by the end you really want Philo to committ the ultimate sin before the the ultimate karma comes for Mother. This is a good movie, not your typical Filipino romance drama you see all the time.
1899 (2022)
Very Boring and Slow
Hmm, I keep seeing reviewers mention a show called Dark, never saw it so I won't pretend to compare. I managed to finish 1.5 episodes of this show, if you can manage more than you must be as bored as I was watching this go nowhere slowly. Very generic characters that have little intrigue or interest. The show tries to create a somber and creepy vibe, but like most bad horror movies it just spins its wheels and doesn't entertain or even make you wonder what will happen next because you almost don't even care. This is almost like a show written for people who don't have access to good shows, good acting and good storylines. It's pretty easy to see why the show was canceled, anything Stephen King is better than this 3rd rate ripoff.
Quarterback (2023)
Relatively boring for the most part.
If you followed the 2022 NFL season, then about 50% of this filming you've already seen. Early episodes feature all 3 Quarterbacks but eventually fades into nothing but loud mouth Mahomes family, unless you are a Chiefs fan I can't imagine how that would be interesting. To me Kirk Cousins was the star of the show and guy I'd want to meet and his wife seems real nice too. I wish there was more on Mariota, but I understand the players had veto rights and blocked a lot of the footage from being used. I guess this show appeals to Chiefs fans and those into Real House wives type shows, i don't know, but there's so much I'd rather watch.
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
Good crime drama
Clyde makes a good psychopathic criminal mind to torture the local Justice Department. The movie has some good twists and a fun ending revenge. Fox isn't particularly likable but I think that's they way they intended it.
The Lost City of Z (2016)
Going forward in reverse
The movie has some good actors and film making, unfortunately the story is simply boring. There's little excitement or adventure, everything feels scientific and has a been here, done that feel. Zero fresh ideas and the ending will leave you deflated.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Decent at best
Starts pretty well the first 35-minutes or so, then goes off the rails of teeny booper horror generic romantic non sense and boredom. The movie really drags the 2nd half and offers nothing more than a queer love story and teens running from killers thinking they can get away or outsmart whoever...with the typical incompetent Sheriff doing nothing useful.
Menace II Society (1993)
Good story and lots of lessons
You really do get out of life what you put into it. If you are evil it's going to come back and get you. I feel sorry for the grand parents having raised such gutter trash child and grandchild.
X-Men: A Team of Outsiders (2012)
Potential squandered
Seems like this could have been a great show, but the storyline is a but stupid at times. The doctor is super annoying and you constantly wish she would get slapped or killed. The series has a weird ending that shows a worldwide epidemic. The series is a contained storyline with a low budget feel as theirs no story outside of the main story.
Your Honor (2020)
Son is a murder
What would you do if your son murdered someone in cold blood? I guess you'll have to watch this series to find out. People kill others with their car everyday and rarely are they accidents and this certainly wasn't either. Kinda like the dad in John Wick trying to protect his son.
American Auto (2021)
Funniest NBC show since the Office
I know NBC has had a dry decade, so interesting to see them finally bounce back with a new show that's actually funny. Obviously a very diverse and modern sitcom, but a good cast.
Hustlers (2019)
Sadly just another mediocre movie
After watching the mediocre Gemini Man and Terminator Dark Fate I hoped this movie would live up to the height. While J Lo gives a strong performance the story is just so typical. Strippers trying to make money any way they can and them blowing through it and desperate for money a month later. I guess the only moral to the story was the crooks on Wall Street got away with their crimes, just like the ladies do in this movie.
Until the Light Takes Us (2008)
It's okay
I'm not a big fan of most of the metal documentaries out there and this one doesn't do much for me either. I look at this as a dumbed down version of events with essentially only the viewpoints of 3 or 4 individuals they spend the entire film interviewing or following around. If you want more details you are much better reading Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground which has like 20 times more info.
Inside Metal: The Rise of L.A. Thrash Metal (2017)
Thrash or not?
Well this video does cover the basics of the start of the scene so that is a plus. However it seems very repetitive in its subject matter, interviews and direction. Way too much time is spent talking about Glam Metal and why LA Thrash became more known as Bay Area Thrash. None of the interviews were all that compelling to me personally and I'm not exactly sure why Accept a German band were included in this at all.
First Man (2018)
Too long and boring
Gosling was terrible in his wooden acting. The director did a poor job in filming the flight scenes, all from the cockpit where you couldn't see what was going on. I'm guessing this story would have been better told through a PBS special then they did here.
The 15:17 to Paris (2018)
Pretty good and down to earth film
I had no expectations for this film, so was pleased to find it enjoyable. The acting and story was well written. The directing was great by the GOAT and a humble soundtrack. After watching the boring First Man yesterday this was a bright spot.
Beautifully Broken (2018)
Excellent Family Film
I never read reviews for this movie, so I didn't really have any expectations going in. However, this was a really good movie about how all lives can have problems and opportunities. Family should stick together and try to help others to make their lives and the world a better place for all.
Adrift (2018)
Easily one of the worst movies of the year.
I thought based on the critic reviews this movie would at least be decent, but it was very boring. I took my wife and there was only 2 other people in the theater on a Tuesday evening. This story is so basic and so much been there done that. Essentially there's only 2 actors in the movie 90% of the time and they simply aren't very interesting. I didn't care for the flash back's, though you'll see the silly reason for it late in the story of why they wait until near the end to show the actual ship wreck. I don't know if this was Woodley's first time producing a film, but it definitely missed the mark. There's nothing exciting or interesting that happens in particular. The mediocre soundtrack can't make you care anymore about the character's and it's a relief when the storm scene finally is shown. I'm glad with movie pass I didn't have to pay to waste 2 hours of my life.
Wayward Pines: Bedtime Story (2016)
Finally over, maybe forever
I would rate the season finale higher, but it seemed to just cut off at the end with no real answer to all the build up. Like most of the season this episode had it's flaws and dragged a bit. However, the ending gave no satisfaction, we can only assume the humans fell into sleep and either the Abbies continued their evolution or died off and were replaced by another humanoid species. Either way I'd be happy if the show didn't return. While Season 2 was really good, season 2 had potential but often bogged down and spun it's wheels in confusion without direction. Wayward Pines became just another show on TV and there's few characters worth caring about.
Marco Polo (2014)
Solid Show
I'm on the boarder of giving this show 6 or 7 stars, but seeing how I've only made it through episode 5 I will withhold final judgment. Like others I'm not sure how true any thing in this story is or is it just piece's of history thrown together to build a story around the time Marco Pollo visited Asia? I find Marco to be out of place and somewhat erratic in this story, sometimes he tells the truth about things and sometimes he lies. Sometimes he seems to not care if his actions result in his death. Overall the story and filming are both dark and a bit depressing. There's no joy or light to be found and sometimes I wish the Asian acting was done in the native tongue with subtitles, somehow that would make it feel more authentic. There's probably better shows on right now, but I'm a sucker for following a series to it's conclusion sometimes.
Jarhead (2005)
All the elements are there...but it doesn't work
I finally watched this movie on Blu-Ray last night. I love war/military type films so I figured it should be enjoyable considering all the good reviews. I don't know if the Full Metal Jacket clone first 30-minutes turned me off the to the rest of the film or just the generic story and acting? I like Jamie Fox in The Kingdom, which is a much better film. Jake Gyllenhaal was brilliant in Zodiac and End of Watch. I don't know if I've seen a film that spent so much of it's dialog on cursing as this movie does. As the story progresses you really feel the movie start to drag a bit and wonder if anything is actually going to ever happen. In the end this Marine unit misses the war and there is no fighting or shooting at all. Then to wrap up the movie is a retarded party seen with everyone drinking around bonfires and shooting their guns in the end. The only real saving grace of this film is Lucas Black's character and Peter Sarsgaard to some extent. There are so many much better war/military films then this, including the above mentioned The Kingdom and Green Zone if you like Middle East zones. I must also say that if this is how Marines typically act and are organized, they certainly aren't the well oiled machine I thought they were supposed to be.
Beautiful Boy (2010)
Below Average film
My wife and I found this movie dull, interesting and lacking any real spark. The first 3rd of the movie was okay, the middle 1/3 was totally boring and the final 1/3 a bit more interesting. The movie really seemed to drag for a while in the middle as so many movies do, they take what should be a 50-minute script and try to make a movie out of it. The acting in this movie is good, but they simply can't save what isn't there to begin with. There simply isn't enough character development or interesting moments in the story to make this a good film. At no point do we see the back story of why the couple became estranged or what led their son to go on a killing spree. I guess due to this being a low budget film or 1st time director there is no variation in the film and it is flat throughout. A very reserved film style that lacks anything fresh or original. I'd love to see someone write a movie on this subject again, only this time do it the right way.
Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
Sweet Action Goodness
Not many good action movies that keep there intensity throughout, but this is a rare breed. Good acting across the board and great cinema sound help push this beyond the average action flick. After the 15-minute introduction to the characters it's pretty much non-stop action movie shooting and killing goodness. If you like non-stop violence and one-man war machine this is your movie. If you want a movie that makes perfect sense...well you wouldn't be watching movies would you? Obviously this scenario is pretty much impossible, but beyond that it's fun to watch! I would recommend this film to any action movie fan.
Omohide poro poro (1991)
The weakest Studio Ghibli release...
I've seen so far. I thought they couldn't do worse then Tales from Earthsea, but in some ways Only Yesterday is worse. The animation is sub par for a Ghibli release, I guess the budget was lower then normal. I agree with all the other reviews that the story is simple and slow, but it lacks heart or originality and isn't particularly interesting or joyful. Maybe something is lost in the subtitles and lack of music in comparison to all the Ghibli titles that have been wonderfully overdubbed with English soundtracks (Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononokee, Ponyo, Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart, The Cat Returns, Howls Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, Grave of the Fireflys, Arrietty and Nausicaa. Oh well, you knew at some point they would misstep.
