Enough Said (2013)
Most realistic dialog I've heard in ages
I saw this movie this past weekend, when it FINALLY made it to a local theater. The fact that I found a lot of kinship with Julia Louis Dreyfus' character helped push it up a notch or two. Like her character, I'm a divorcée, and my only child, a boy, went off to college this past August. Fortunately, I'm not as needy, and would never think of inviting one of his (younger) friends to live with me after he went off to school. :-) All in all, very realistic dialog (it's not easy dating in your 40s/50s), and I think this captured an empty-nester's mindset very well. Great acting by all, but James Galdofini's performance as Albert was charming and bittersweet.
Zombieland (2009)
A definitely FUN movie!
May contain spoilers.
Just got back from seeing this with my 14 year old son. We both thoroughly enjoyed this movie which was a whole lot o' fun! Scares me a little that I didn't find it all that gory, from the opening scene on. :-) All but six of us left the theater before the credits finished rolling, so we got a treat at the very end.
Lots of good lines doled out by Harrelson and Eisenberg, who played off each other very convincingly.
I'll probably rent it when it comes out on DVD, because I can only imagine the outtakes from the scenes with Murray and Harrelson!
Step Brothers (2008)
OMG! What a HOOT!
I just got back from theater, having gone by myself. I have to admit I laughed out loud and I snorted a few times. I didn't think "Talladega Nights" was very funny, nor "Anchorman", so I had low-to-medium expectations for this one. But, then again, I'll go to see Will Ferrell in pretty much anything! You can tell they must've had a lot of fun filming this, and were at their best when they were hurling insults at each other. And how can you resist that cheesy marketing photo, posed like little boys as parents would in a studio photog opp? "40 Year Old Virgin" had that same kid-stuck-in-an-adult-body feel to it. Highly enjoyable film - I can't wait for the rental, as I'm sure the outtakes/bloopers will be a riot!
The King of Kong (2007)
Excellent documentary
I just watched this last night with my 12 year old son. The two of shouted, "Steve was ROBBED!" Now, I realize editorial license may have been taken, but it sure seemed like the screws were being put to Wiebe, especially when Mitchell's videotape was accepted. Did the guy who checks the videos find any discrepancies, once the original was submitted? *WAS* the original submitted?
Was it my imagination that the two wives were portrayed as two different types? One seemed so wholesome, the other, well, not so much. I also found it interesting at the end when Mitchell and Sanders are sitting in the booth, and Sanders made some really nice comments about Wiebe. Mitchell says something derogatory, and Sanders is clearly uncomfortable with what Mitchell said.
Thanks to this movie, my son now wants to go the Fun Spot in Weirs Beach!
Yes (2004)
Apparently I'm missing something...
OK, OK, so it was supposed to be artful in its use of Iambic pentameter. Unfortunately all I viewed was a a movie that thought it was Oh-so-clever. How these two people would have ever gotten together in REAL life, is beyond me.
The one clever bit was with Shirley Henderson, and her cleaning cronies, occasionally interjecting their views of the various relationships in the movie. Just some of the looks the cleaning folks shot to the cameras was well worth it.
I wouldn't compare this to "American Beauty" at all, as one earlier reviewer has. Don't know WHAT I'd compare it to, but I'm glad it was a free rental. 108 minutes of my life I'll never get back.
The Aristocrats (2005)
Pretty f-in' funny!
I just got home from seeing this at the local "indie" theater. I went by myself, but found myself laughing out loud at some of the versions, most notably Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Pollak (as Christopher Walken), Bob Saget, Mario Cantone (as Liza Minnelli) and Gilbert Gottfried. This film is definitely not for the timid, but no one walked out during the showing I attended.
The basic premise of the movie is being let in on the comedians' "secret handshake", so to speak. Each comedian puts their own spin on the joke, and it provides commentary on their coming of age - who told it the first time they heard it, comments on how their colleagues tell it. The various versions can include incest, defecation, urination, sexual taboos, etc., etc. You're probably asking yourself, "How could any of those things be funny???" Go see the movie and you'll find out!
Closer (2004)
Just back from viewing this!
Oh no!!! Went on a FIRST date with someone to see this movie! My biggest surprise was the very raw I'm session between two of the characters. By no means am I prudish, but I didn't think it needed to go to the extent it did. *** SPOILER *** As I had read in reviews of this movie, the scene where "Larry" interrogates "Anna" regarding her affair with "Dan" was REALLY uncomfortable, but, I thought, VERY honest. I think I'm in love with Clive Owens - but he was a spiteful S.O.B.
At the end of this movie, I was drained, and wondered what the point was that was (supposedly) being made? That the closer someone got to Love, the more they retreated from truthfulness? Instead of exploring the path of Love, it seemed more like the path of obsession.
