Extant (2014)
Very stylish sci fi thriller
Extant is everything and much more than I expected from a sci fi TV series. It's a series that is especially interesting for women. There is a lot to relate to, for mothers and working women. The plot is from the start on very engaging. You don't need to drag yourself through terrible pilots like many other TV series. The pilot doesn't need sex or violence to sell itself, its the great story being told that makes it worth while from the beginning.
The photography is absolutely gorgeous, with many CGI that really matter. The settings are also mind blowing, each building, room or car is beautifully styled.
Then we have Halle Berry, she must be the most beautiful woman on earth! Her face is marvelous and she doesn't have had any plastic surgery or botox, her face can express everything. Great actress! Her TV series son is played by a talented child actor, Pierce Gagnon. He is truly intriguing and has a dark undercurrent. I love his part. Im so glad this series has been made, because it has style and the Halle Berry character is a great role model.
You see, lately I got very bored with all the sex and violence and serial killers and tortured detectives. It's a pity that TV got so obsessed with violence.
All together I find Extant a classic, very well crafted series that deserves attention.
True Detective (2014)
Overacting ruins it for me
Everybody is raving about this series but not me. I have to admit, the photography and music is brilliant, but that is about all I find attractive. First of all we have Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. They desperately try to impress with their acting capabilities and that ruins it for me. Woody constantly does this stubborn and willful mouth pose, like he had a stoke, which I find really annoying. A good actor doesn't need a pose or a gimmick. It has to shine through. Matthew, especially the flash back scenes, is so dreadful serious and long-winded I just cant take another episode. Woody and Matthew play characters who want to be "authentic"...but their authenticity is obnoxiously pondered, and feels very forced. The producers probably watched Scandinavian crime series with outspoken personalities and wanted to copy this aspect. Well, Americans can't be Europeans and shouldn't try to. After watching several episodes I realize I really don't care if a suspect is arrested or not. I don't care who the killed woman was. Besides, I am not impressed with the devilish worshiping scenery of the victim. After watching all seasons Dexter I know what murder staging is, and that was pretty awesome in Dexter and the staging in True Detective feels like mustard after dinner.
The Americans (2013)
tasteless and bleak
After watching 4 episodes of The American I decided to call it quits. For me there are too many characters in this story, and all of them are totally unlikeable. There has to be a person a like, that I can identify with but this show lacks that. This Russian couple, really, they are so annoying. They are so awfully styled, and their home makes me sick, so distasteful. She fights for mother Russia and hates the American way of life...as if communism was still top of the bill in 1980. It wasn't and everybody knew what was going on there, the many political prisoners and an economy that only produced atom weapons and totally useless plastic cars. And this fight from the Russians against Reagan's Star Wars...Man! It was joke back then, nobody took that serious! Remember Two Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood? Thats how politics were mocked. How many people tried to escape Russia but mom Elisabeth keeps hailing it. I can't and I wont buy this for real, not even in a fiction series. The murderous assignments this couple has to pull of drain them emotionally and physically. So do they go on like mad man? I would have loved some suspense, but this show is just plain in your face low life's...zero romanticism or elegance, nothing, just pure bleak misery. To make a long story short: this show is so washed out and a big cliché.
The Strain (2014)
awful
It's a long time ago that I watched utterly garbage like The Strain. I had looked forward to it but I can't go on after viewing only one episode. The script is so terrible I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. When this silent plane lands on JFK, everybody assumes, without any investigation, all passengers and crew must be dead, just because the curtains are closed. Yeah right. So it takes a lot of time before two persons go inside the plane. Nobody cares about survivors, no ambulance, no medical examination, no nothing. Then they suspect some kind of disease. In the cargo they find this huge box full of dirt. It is not sealed or secured even when they don't know despite it is sealed off, because security believes he is one of them and must be a good guy. We're talking Ebola 2.0! Of course the dirt box must escape JFK, without the box we don't have a story! A father welcomes his little daughter after it was believed she was dead. Well, the girl looks awfully ghostly but dad still takes her in his arms. He notices nothing. So what should be blatantly clear for the characters is only all too obvious to me? Epic suspense fail.
Odd Thomas (2013)
very dull
I thought I was going to like this movie but sadly I found it very dull. Usually I love horror movies, no matter how bad they are. But not this one. I got the impression this Thomas is psychotic, he is seeing strange and evil creatures all the time. So I watched all these scenes he is hallucinating while this has no meaning in the story, of whatever, I just had to wait and watch until things become clear? sorry, but I got so bored and turned it off. However, I did like the acting but thats not enough for me. I like a movie that's gripping from the beginning and I hate it when my patience is tested for a reason I can't figure out. Horror and comedy doesn't go very well usually, and definitely not in this movie.
Jongens (2014)
Brilliant Dutch movie on teenage gay love
Theme: "Jongens" is a coming of age drama. It's about accepting one's own homosexuality, and the struggle that comes along. The love story is pure and natural, set to the background of an all male sports team for teenagers.
Photography: "Jongens" (Boys) has the most incredibly and beautiful imagery you can wish for, both in landscapes as well as sports and love. This movie is almost entirely shot outside at Utrechtse Heuvelrug (Utrecht wolds), a very green part of the Netherlands, and nearby lakes. The surroundings breathe innocence and flourishing life. It challenges physical exercising. Camera man Melle van Essen has done a great job. Young actors Gijs Blom and Ko Zandvliet are brilliant.
This movie is excellent educational material for high school students because homophobia is still an issue world wide.
I'm not going to tell you the story, and you better don't read it elsewhere, just watch and enjoy it.
