The Indrani Mukerjea Story Buried Truth review :
An outstanding docu-series detailing the widely reported Sheena Bora murder case; The Indrani Mukerjea Story makes for an ideal binge watch this weekend, especially when there aren't any new big ticket Bollywood releases to relish!!
This four episode series of approximately forty five minutes each, takes an unbiased and uncompromising view on the high profile case, which involved the INX Media couple Peter Mukerjea and his as beautiful as ambitious wife Indrani. "Is it sin for a woman to be ambitious?", she asks the audience at one point!!!
Narrated by various journalists (including a seemingly excited Rajdeep Sardesai), the disappearance of the twenty five year old Sheena Bora and her alleged skeletal remains found three years later, has enough meat to engage and grip even a few those, who may have never followed this difficult case!!
The highlight is of course, Indrani Mukerjea explaning her side of the story. She appears so very bold yet so calm and composed while answering some tough questions. Having said that, the makers are clever enough to not let it influence your overall judgement in any manner. That is the series biggest strength.
Everyone from Indrani's kids Vidhie and Mekhail to her defence lawyer, get a chance to offer their own perspective to the jigsaw puzzle of a case. It gives an almost Rashomon feel to the series. You decide for yourself using your intelligence...excellent stuff. Don't miss it on Netflix!!

Mast Mein Rehne Ka (2023)
Jaggu and Neena rock the show!!
Mast Mein Rehne Ka review :
A quiet release on Amazon Prime in midst of the ongoing Animal shor-sharaaba; Mast Mein Rehne Ka turns out to be a breezy feel good fare with Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta striking a sweet senior citizen friendship, which you would root and hoot...
In fact, Jaggu dada is in top form (as usual) playing the Karwari Kamath to perfection. Neena Gupta, as the boisterous Punjaban cussing in every sentence and calling Jaggu "Madrasi" is also first rate. The angst and emotional pain of neglected senior citizens is effectively explored through their platonic relationship.
There is a parallel love track between a petty chor (Abhishek Chauhan) and street hooker (Monika, impressive) surviving in the big bad Mumbai. Writer- actor turned director Vijay Maurya does quite well for his first full fledged movie. Mast Mein Rehne Ka easily fits in the "Can See" category. Make it your Sunday matinee!!

Animal (2023)
A masterpiece conceived in a bloody abattoir.
Animal review :
In an interview to certain "elite" critic after Kabir Singh's (2019) success, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga had condescendingly requested to not hurry to review his movies. He also warned the critic that he would show "what violence is" in his next movie. Well with Animal, Vanga has definitely delivered his promise of violence and made a seemingly critic proof movie as those one or two star reviews don't matter anymore. The film was housefull in a generally empty Sunday morning show at Citylight Cinema, Matunga!!
Indeed, Animal is a masterpiece (with its share of flaws) conceived and executed in a bloody abattoir. It is as impactful as that axe crashing the head of Ranbir's opponent. You may like it, hate it but you just can't ignore this movie. Surely!!
The basic theme of a neglected son (Ranbir Kapoor) going to any length for his father (Anil Kapoor) bears resemblance to the Sanjay Dutt- Kabir Bedi track in Feroz Khan's not-so-successful Yalgaar (1992). But Vanga chooses to take a different route of highly sadistic violence and blatant male chauvinism. In one scene, Ranbir's character praises his girlfriend (Rashmika Mandanna) pelvis and states she will bear him good children. Ouch!!
Expectedly, Vanga extracts outstanding performances from his prime cast. Ranbir Kapoor is extraordinary and his life trajectory, from a school kiddo firing bullets in his sister's classroom to an oldie telling a monkey joke over a glass of whiskey, is simply superb. The actor is truly a delight to watch in every scene!!
Anil Kapoor is reliably first rate as the father who finds a criminal in his doting son. Having said that, the reason why he neglects his son right since childhood remains unexplored. Tripti Dimri leaves an impact even in a small role. She has also exposed a lot in that sex scene with Ranbir. Bobby Deol gets just three pivotal scenes and nails it. His mute villain speaks volumes through his fiery eyes. Take a bow, Lord Bobby!! Rashmika Mandanna isn't as bad as the trolling she got after the trailer release. Her role though a main heroine, isn't developed optimally!!
On the flipside, the three hours thirty minutes runtime (with interval) gets a bit overbearing as the film's tempo dips at several places in the second half. Vanga's self indulgence leads to certain long drawn scenes particularly the Ranbir-Rashmika verbal duel during Karva Chauth and that entire village sequence where Ranbir goes to recruit his fighter team.
Finally, Animal relies heavily on its violence. The blood splurting action sequences are never seen before in Bollywood. You will need nerves of steel to stomach it. The pre-interval carnage in a hotel will leave you flabbergasted. Ditto for the bloodied climax in an airfield!! And in case you feel you have seen it all, please wait for the end credits sequence. The bloodbath ain't over yet in Vanga's world. Theres an Animal Park coming!!

Starfish (2023)
Khushalii Kumar soars but Starfish drowns...
Starfish review :
Based on Bina Nayak's book Starfish Pickle, this two hours long movie turns out to be a royal bore. Beware guys as it can genuinely lull even insomniacs in to a deep snore...sorry to say but Starfish goes astray despite quite a few positives up its sleeve.
Like the exotic locales of Malta and Sicily (Italy) which are beautifully captured here! The underwater sequences are also wonderfully shot which reminded me of one more Bollywood biggie called Blue (2009). Unfortunately just like Blue, Starfish rests on a wafer thin plot which just doesn't go anywhere. After all, how many times can you watch the voluptuous Khushalii Kumar drinking like a fish, doing drugs and partying hard like there's no tomorrow. Glug glug!!
Khushalii Kumar was impressive in last years Dhokha Round D Corner and in Starfish too, she displays adequate acting chops coupled with her abundant sex appeal quite effectively. Kudos to that!!
I was actually expecting some hot chemistry between the macho Milind Soman and Khushalii but just as they come close to kiss, the director shifts focus away from them. Oooff, that's sacrilege!! As for those two (supposed) hunky heroes who get lucky with the leading lady, the less said the better!!
To sum up, Khushalii soars but Starfish drowns...

Apurva (2023)
Tara Sutaria's best performance till date.
Apurva review :
"Mera Naam Apurva Hai" is her clap-worthy concluding line to one of her abductors.
Indeed, this is Tara Sutaria's finest performance till date and the titular film, which premiered directly on Disney Hotstar this mid-week, will hopefully give her career the much needed boost!!
Tara plays the about to be married Apurva, who gets abducted from her bus on the Chambal highway. The four sadistic robbers, who take her away just to add some fun element to their night out, don't know whats in the offing for them though!!
As such, Apurva's plot is pretty much predictable like any survival drama...but it's the execution and the acting department that works in its favour. The film's crisp pace at just one hour thirty five minutes run time is another plus. I was actually reminded of Anushka Sharma's far superior NH10 (2015) during some chilling moments. And that's a compliment!!
Expectedly, Abhishek Banerjee and Rajpal Yadav are first rate as the uncouth rabid criminals, who derive perverse pleasure in killing humans -male or female!! Particularly, you will just loathe Banerjee's character as he cares two hoots for even his own gang members...
The surprise revelation of Apurva is but of course Tara Sutaria, who makes most of the golden opportunity she gets to shoulder an entire movie on her own and comes up trumps at the end of it. Atta Girl!!

Thank You for Coming (2023)
Bhumi's good, the movie ain't!!
Thank You For Coming review :
She's been looking for a frog to turn in to prince charming since her teens. At thirty plus of age, she's still not earned her orgasm. And that is after dating and mating with atleast half a dozen males, one of which is apna Anil Kapoor as a romantic shaayar twice her age.
Meet Kanika Kapoor (Bhumi Pednekar), whose life apparently revolves around satisfying her Gspot. Frustrated and unsuccessful at it, she finally agrees to settle with a richie rich goodie good dude (Pradhuman Singh), who is as straight as Bharat Bhushan of yore. Oh Bore!!
Finally, our Kanika aka Kannu experiences her first orgasm after a deep drunken party but unfortunately, doesn't remember whom she slept with. Was it her fiancé or the elderly shaayar or her bestie's curly burly hubby or someone else? Who gave her the satisfaction of a lifetime??!!!
The film's second half is dedicated to finding who the gentleman was... as Kannu goes about questioning her suspects, "Kya tumne?". It actually reminded me of Akshay Kumar asking similar thing to a dozen girls in Heyy Babyy (2007). But guys, that was a Sajid Khan trash and hence, utterly excusable!! Here, the proceedings get thoroughly monotonous and boring after the interval...
Bhumi Pednekar is an efficient actor and can rise above the script, given a good hand (pun unintended). But darlings, expecting her to shoulder an entire movie on her own, especially this one based on such a flimsy premise is taking things too far. About the rest of the cast, the less said the better.
Thank You For Coming tries to drive a point that seventy percent women in this world don't experience orgasm in their entire lives. Dunno how true or false it is!! If it is indeed true, the movie treats it so frivolously that it fails to register in any manner.
The climax offers a solution of "self help" as means to attain the ultimate sexual pleasure. "Aapla Haath Jagannath", it preaches unabashedly. But wasn't that the name of a blockbuster Dada Kondke movie of the '70s. Hmm, no further comment!!!

Based on the book 'Going Viral' by Prof. Balram Bhargava of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), The Vaccine War narrates the intriguing development of India's indigenous vaccine called Covaxin with all the internal as well as external challenges encountered during its making...
Publicised as India's first bioscience film, producer- director Vivek Agnihotri and team deserve a huge applause for putting the spotlight on our unsung heroes - the scientists at ICMR and National Institute of Virology (NIV), who toiled day and night for months to combat the formidable enemy called Corona. The fact that majority of these scientists were women also makes it a pertinent subject of women power. The film is a must see only for that...
Vivek Agnihotri's political leanings are well known and no surprises, he layers his script with an elaborate sub-plot of an almost evil journalist (Raima Sen) plotting against the desi vaccine on orders of the foreign pharma conglomerates hell bent on arm twisting India. While a particular obscure media portal has indeed been indicted of spreading fake news, there were ten other major media channels promoting the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative at that time. The Vaccine War forgets this and instead paints the whole media as anti-establishment. In the climax, they are actually equated to terrorists, which is seriously not done!!
Assuredly, the casting is perfect and Nana Patekar and Pallavi Joshi, appearing together after three decades since Trishagni (1989), are truly outstanding. Girija Oak and Sapthami Gowda pitch in sincere performances. It is interesting as well as ironic to watch the extremely pretty Raima Sen in such a vicious role and boy, does she nail it. Kudos!!
The Vaccine War soars and roars till the time it stays true to its source content of how Covaxin was developed in record time and ended up saving countless lives across the globe. The minute it switches gears to the toolkit narrative, it somehow withers and dithers...
Nevertheless, this is a relevant film of our time which leaves us with a positive message that India CAN do it. Covaxin, Chandrayaan, G20... we have seen it happen in last few years. Three cheers to that!!

Khufiya (2023)
The ladies shine in a slow burner spy thriller!
Khufiya review :
A slow burner espionage drama with the early 2000's as its backdrop; Vishal Bharadwaj's Khufiya premiered directly on Netflix this weekend and despite its sluggish pace, kept me in an engaging mode right till the end. It's a tad long at near two hours forty minutes but still worth the time invested. I vouch!!
The plot ain't that complicated: RAW officer KM (Tabu) is assigned the task of spying on a suspected fellow agent (Ali Fazal) and his family, who has evidently sold his soul to the CIA. But, has he really? There is also a parallel track of a Bangladeshi minister, who is conspiring something sinister. KM lays her trust on a new recruit Heena (Azmeri Haque Badhon) but can she pull off the seemingly impossible task??!!!
Don't expect a high octane actioner or a screen scorcher as Khufiya takes its own time to build its core characters, involve you in the proceedings and then moves to its climax...which may make it a tedious watch for the impatient but then a Baby (2015) or Pathaan (2023), it ain't or expected to be!!
Surprisingly, the espionage movie belongs to its ladies who truly impress big time. Tabu, the superlative actor that she is, leaves a mark though her role isn't entirely meaty. Wamiqa Gabbi as Charu, Ali Fazal's wifey delivers a knockout act especially in the film's second half. Bangladeshi star Azmeri Haque Badhon is outstanding in her complex role. Here's an actor to watch out for in future and hope Bollywood gives her more roles!!
Overall, Khufiya has the trademark Vishal Bharadwaj touch though I personally feel the director gives his best when adapting Shakespeare. Who can forget Maqbool (2003), Omkara (2006) and of course Haider (2014), my personal favorite of the trio. Khufiya isn't as great as them but still makes the cut to a watch. Make it your weekend matinee!!

Jaane Jaan (2023)
Kareena Kapoor is the jaan!!

Lady Drishyam.
These two words would sum up the latest crime thriller from Sujoy Ghosh, which is being publicised as Kareena Kapoor's OTT debut. Whateva!!
Jaane Jaan is basically an adaptation of The Devotion of Suspect X, a popular novel made in to a Hollywood movie earlier as well as wonderfully Indianised by Jeethu Joseph and the late Nishikant Kamat as Drishyam (2015). The plot premise plus the alibi offered by the suspect are identical here though Sujoy Ghosh begins and ends his movie on a totally different note. And mind you, I found the climax quite abrupt and disappointing.
The lovely Kareena Kapoor is obviously the centre of attraction here - for her next door neighbour cum mathematics teacher (Jaideep Ahlawat) as well as the investigating cop (Vijay Varma) cross-examining her in a murder case. The victim is supposedly Kareena's ex-husband, who was a dirty cop indulging in shady deals from hawala to dance bars.
Like Ghosh's earlier films, the characters are well etched and deliciously quirky!! Jaideep Ahlawat is outstanding as the socially awkward Maths genius who sees logic as well as magic in numbers. Vijay Varma playing the tough cop, pitches in a competent act. In one scene, he finds it difficult to resist Kareena's charm and sorta self admonishes himself. Haha!!
Ultimately, Jaane Jaan belongs to Kareena Kapoor, who is the "jaan" of this otherwise average flick. Her looks, body language, eye contact and dialogue delivery are just perfect. Watch her in the scene where she sees her ex-hubby for first time or later, when she grooves to the iconic Lata Mangeshkar song from which the movie title is borrowed. This is indeed Kareena 2.0. Yup, she's come a long way from playing Poo and hamming to glory in films like Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon and Khushi (both 2003). This lady has matured beautifully, knows how to act now and most importantly, means business. Lady Drishyam, actually!!

Scam 2003 - The Telgi Story (2023)

Scam 2003: The Telgi Story review :
After the outstanding Scam 1992 which dealt with Harshad Mehta's securities scam, Hansal Mehta and team brings a spiritual sequel narrating the journey of Abdul Karim Telgi, who was the mastermind of the infinitely bigger stamp paper scam.
Gagan Dev as Telgi is a showstopper, as much as Pratik Gandhi was as Harshad Mehta in Scam 1992. The basic motive is greed...which the fictitious Gordon Gecko famously claimed in Wallstreet (1987) as for the want of a better word, is good!! Good it is atleast initially as we witness Telgi growing from a fruit seller in a small town to a fake stamp paper baron after oiling the corrupt system - from cops and bureaucrats to politicians!!
The infamous Tarannum incident where Telgi blew away close to a crore rupees one night on a bar girl, is the highlight of the five episodes series where we see the character boosting his ego at that insane cost!! The series ends there with a promise of a second volume coming in November to take the story forward. Scam 2003 is a definite one time watch which will whet your apetite for the next to follow...

Dream Girl 2 (2023)
Ayushmann Khurrana and Seema Pahwa make it work!
Dream Girl 2 review :
For the '80s movie buffs like me, Dream Girl meant Hema Malini. That film celebrated her eternal beauty right till 2019 when Ayushmann Khurrana hijacked the title for his romcom which became a surprise box office hit. Dressed in a drag to elicit laughter quite like what Mehmood Saahab did in the '70s, the new Dream Girl franchise is basically an old wine in new bottle which works due to Ayushmann's perfect comic timing coupled with a stellar cast who deliver big time...
Initially titled Karam Hi Pooja Hai, the makers decided to call it Dream Girl 2 supposedly to cash in on the success of first part and to give them their due, the end product is a perfect follow up to that 2019 movie. In fact, Dream Girl 2 ups the ante on the humour as well as glamour quotient providing you two hours ten minutes of unabashed entertainment. Logic be damned!!After Gadar and OMG 2, this could well be another hit at the box office. Truly, 'achche din' are back for Bollywood and how!!
Cut to the plot, Ayushmann is forced to lead a dual life of Karam and Pooja to settle his father's (Annu Kapoor) debts as well as satisfy the dowry demand of twenty five lakhs to marry his lady love (Ananya Pandey). Next, he multi tasks as a bar dancer for the shady Sona bhai (Vijay Raaz) as well as the coy 'bahu' of Abu Saleem (Paresh Rawal). There is an added 'tadka' of Saleem's elderly sister Jumani (Seema Pahwa), who has the hots for Karam while his pappa Annu Kapoor wishes to make her his wife. Oops!!
Dream Girl 2 is peppered with hilarious one liners and crazy situations which will make you roll with laughter. Khurrana's double date with Vijay Raaz and Seema Pahwa in same restobar is simply hilarious. So is the misunderstanding between Annu Kapoor and Seema Pahwa, which culminates in a lol sequence at Paresh Rawal's home. The screenplay and dialogues are indeed top notch, specially the witty one liners from Shilpa to Suniel Shetty and Sunny Deol to Leone. Laughter guaranteed!!
The performances are expectedly first rate. The veterans - Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor, Asrani - are reliably competent in their characters. Seema Pahwa is outstanding as the libidinous Jumani and her scenes with Khurrana and Annu Kapoor bring the house down. On the other hand, Bollywood ki self declared struggler Ananya Pandey is ineffective and unable to conjure any chemistry with Ayushmann Khurrana. In fact, she is hardly noticeable in the movie.
Finally, Dream Girl 2 belongs to Ayushmann Khurrana, who once again delivers a super fine performance. From a MTV Roadie to singer to actor, this man has come a long way and can get in to any character with comfortable ease. Sperm donor ho ya bar dancer!! Dream Girl 2 is yet another feather in his cap. Kudos Mr. Khurrana!!

Taali review :
Let me start with a confession!!
I am a huge Sushmita Sen fan right since the '90s when she won the Miss Universe title and entered Bollywood as an actor. Sush can be called an eternal beauty with grace and dignity aplenty. That she is playing a transgender in the latest JioCinema web-series titled Taali was sufficient for me to binge watch it on the day of release.
Based on life of social activist Shreegauri Sawant who was instrumental in getting the much needed social recognition for the transgender community, Taali is structured in a non-linear form oscillating between the court case and Gauri's past as Ganesh. The six episodes skim through her life journey leaving out some crucial parts like how she managed to cope up in Mumbai after her family deserted her. Also at times, the screenplay appears to be a matter of convenience as Gauri keeps getting one opportunity after another post her sex operation. A bit more detailed study in to her psyche and mind would have helped here and I don't know if that is reserved for second season, if any.
Coming to dear Sush, she is undoubtedly the lifeline of the web-series. It is truly gutsy of her to become Gauri Sawant and deliver such a splendid performance in a totally deglam avatar. Just look at her when she confronts a hospital dean (Ananth Mahadevan) in his office and you will understand my point. Kudos Sushmita!!

OMG 2 (2023)
Bravo Akshay Kumar!!
OMG 2 review :
A supposed spiritual sequel to Oh My God (OMG) in which Paresh Rawal held Lord Krishna (Akshay Kumar) responsible for the devastation of his shop; OMG 2 has no direct case against the almighty God. Akshay Kumar plays Lord Shiva's 'gan' (messenger/follower), who helps Rawal's replacement Pankaj Tripathi in bringing justice to his teenage son. Of course, it is common knowledge that Kumar is Lord Shiva here relegated to being his messenger as per the diktat of our dear censor board. Quite a few dialogues in the movie also appear muted or modified as they don't lip sync.
Cut to the plot, Tripathi is a devout Mahaadev bhakt, whose son is caught masturbating in his school washroom and his video goes viral. Next, beta is expelled from the school whose trustee is 'Lord Ram' fame Arun Govil. Oh ho!! Pappa then files a case against the school and a few others (including himself) as responsible for his son's immoral conduct. His point is clear - introduce sex education in schools so teenagers don't go astray..
The film raises a serious concern about the need for sex education even while staying confined to the realms of commercial cinema. In fact, the mood is kept comical just like the first part. The courtroom scenes between Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam, playing the defending lawyer, are hilarious and bring the house down.
The performances are first rate. Pankaj Tripathi is outstanding in the lead role. Yami Gautam is simply superb in a somewhat negative part. The pretty lady lends her own grace and class to her grey character. Pavan Malhotra, the fantastic actor that he is, brings in his own value add as the judge for this unique case. His expressions speak volumes!! Aarush Varma is equally effective as the confused shamed teenager driven to suicide. Even peripheral characters like the quack and sex medicine vendor are memorable.
Finally, OMG 2 belongs to Akshay Kumar, who elevates it to a cut above the commonplace proving yet again that he is 'asli khiladi' of socially relevant cinema. His dance to 'Har Har Mahadev' number is truly clap worthy. In one scene, he hums the popular Gadar song as if giving a nod to its sequel running riot in the next audi. Bravo Akshay!!

Sunny and Handpump back in action!!
Gadar 2 review :
Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seat belts and get ready to time travel in the past.
2001 to be precise when Gadar released and theatres across India reverberated to 'Hindustan Zindabad' and 'Bharatmata ki Jai' cries.
Gadar 2 brings that same euphoria back to cinemas and how!!
The noisy boisterous crowd at Movietime Starcity Cinema, Matunga were cheering every Sunny Paaji scene so loudly that I missed some dialogues in between. Need to go back anyway as Gadar 2 has tremendous repeat value even for a regular moviegoer - single screen ho ya multiplex, it is a must see.
Taking Tara Singh- Sakina's story forward, this direct sequel takes place in 1970's Pakistan where Tara goes one more time to save his son Jeetey imprisoned there. The enemy this time, is an ISI General seeking revenge for Tara Singh's past adventures in Pakistan we are all aware of...
Expectedly, Sunny Deol is outstanding in a role no other actor can attempt to save his life!! Tara Singh is a complete Deol character. Right from his introduction till the climactic encounter, Deol plays to the gallery and delivers his punches - the 'dhaai kilo haath' ones as well verbal roar of 'Hindustan Zindabad forever'. Wow!!
Ameesha Patel compliments Sunny superbly and gives the film an effective nostalgic touch when the part one chartbuster songs are recreated on them. Utkarsh Sharma, growing up from kiddo Jeetey to play Tara-Sakina's grown up 'gabru' son, pitches in a decent performance. Simrat Kaur as Utkarsh's Pakistani girlfriend, looks gorgeous. The love angle between the two is truly endearing. Manish Wadhwa leaves a mighty impression as the evil General who hates Indians, particularly Tara Singh.
The action sequences are brilliantly executed and Sunny Deol does wonders with a hammer and a wheel this time. The iconic handpump from first part also plays its own pivotal role. Tee hee!!
Anil Sharma's direction is rooted in the '90s and that is the biggest USP of Gadar 2. It transforms us to that era of masala entertainers where over the top action and punchy one liners generated 'ceetis' and claps from the audience. We have been missing that fun in Bollywood for quite some time now. Glad it is back. Hindustan Zindabad!!

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023)
All about loving your lovings!!!
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani review :
Remember RGV's Company (2002)?
There was a character in it (played wonderfully by the late Neeraj Vora) modelled on Karan Johar, who boasts of his film being a "big big hit" while announcing his new venture. "Its not a love story. It's a love saga. Its all about....loving your lovings!!", he declares. Well, Karan Johar latest directorial in his twenty-fifth year of filmmaking existence, is exactly that movie which RGV mocked in Company...
Borrowing elements from his own past hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and a crucial sub-plot from Subhash Ghai's Saudagar (1991), Rocky Rani offers nothing new in terms of originality or content. Yet, the film turns out to be an engaging one time watch for its crackling chemistry between the lead pair and some witty dialogues which bring a smile on your face.
Ranveer Singh suits the character of 'bindaas' Rocky to the T and actually appears to be playing himself in the movie. Alia looks lovely in those designer sarees and conjures an amazing chemistry with her Gully Boy (2019) co-star. On the other hand, veterans like Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan are thoroughly wasted. It is appalling to see Garam Dharam in such a whinny sissy role. He doesn't even have proper lines to speak in the movie. Sad!! Jaya Bachchan's strict snobbish grandmom reminds you of Madhur Jaffery in Ramesh Sippy's Saagar (1985).
Music has always been Karan's fortè but shockingly, Rocky Rani is just plain average on this front. The old hindi songs medley is well assembled though! The production values are first rate and Karan's penchant of passing off foreign palaces as Chandni Chowk is omnipresent here as well. The movie is a visual delight, no doubt.
Finally, Rocky aur Rani makes for an ideal date movie. You will enjoy the two and half hours inside the dark auditorium and forget it all, a few minutes after coming out. It's that Kjo-neric!!

Bawaal (2023)
Varun & Janhvi shine in this love & war drama!
Bawaal review :
A direct to OTT release; Nitesh Tiwari's Bawaal gets an A for its intent and the underlying message. Even with its share of flaws and a few slack moments in between the two hours fifteen minutes runtime.
A highly image conscious Lucknowi school teacher (Varun Dhawan) despises his wife (Janhvi Kapoor) due to her epileptic condition. This ever hyper history teacher creates a 'bawaal' when he slaps the legislator's son and gets instantly suspended. As an image saving ploy, he travels to Europe with wifey in tow, and streams the World War II (WW II) striken cities of Paris, Berlin, Normandy, etc as a live history lesson to his students...
Admittedly, Bawaal's basic concept of finding happiness in oneself, is quite pertinent for today's times. To quote a yesteryear song "Duniya mein itna ghum hai, mera ghum kitna kum hai", is the lesson here. Varun's inherent frustration finds a vent while exploring the war sites of Europe. His strained equation with Janhvi also changes during the course of their Europe tour, which make for some genuinely funny moments. The Gujju gang encounter is one such hilarious sequence.
On the flipside, correlating WW II events to the human psyche of finding true happiness may not be relatable to the average Indian. Perhaps a history lesson from India might have served the purpose better.
Tiwari extracts awesome performances from his lead pair. Varun Dhawan is just perfect as the utter selfish dude, who just cannot think beyond himself. His subsequent self realization also looks completely convincing. Janhvi Kapoor is a revelation. She springs a pleasant surprise with a highly controlled and effective act besides looking extremely pretty throughout the movie. Bawaal would certainly boost her career in a big way. Kudos!
To sum up, Bawaal is worth a dekho. Don't know how its theatrical performance would have been, but it will definitely do very well on Amazon Prime. Hit hai boss!!

Oppenheimer (2023)
Not Nolan's best but still worth a watch!!
Oppenheimer review :
"I am become death; the destroyer of the worlds"; this particular Bhagvad Gita reference finds itself in the most unlikely moment in Christopher Nolan's latest cinematic spectacle called Oppenheimer, which is the name of the father of the atomic bomb. Knowing the genius of Nolan, he tells the the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer in his now patented "non-linear"form with the all important Sanskrit phrase from the revered Hindu holy book forming part of a sex scene as well as the adrenaline rushing "test" of the atom bomb.
The film is not just a simple biopic on the creator of the atom bomb but also a wonderful insight in to the political situation of the '40s, particularly the World War II. Oppenheimer is shown to be leftist inclined; an ideology which gets him embroiled in a litigation later. His relationship with his fellow scientists (particularly the great Albert Einstein) as well as his personal affairs with his wife (Emily Blunt) and girlfriend (Florence Pugh) are effectively shown.
Quite verbose in its presentation with two parallel conversations leading to the climax, Oppenheimer is certainly not everyone's cup of tea, particularly if you are craving for just action and not dialogue heavy stuff. The actual bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki isn't shown as Nolan prefers concentrating on aftermath of the same. Oppenheimer's meeting with then POTUS Truman makes for a highly interesting scene. So is the climactic revelation about a certain crucial character.
Technically, Nolan scores full marks yet again with an outstanding background score, awesome visual appeal and top notch production values expected from him.
The cast is extraordinary and expectedly, Cillian Murphy delivers his best performance till date. Robert Downey Jr. Is the scene stealer as Lewis Strauss, the Chairman of the US Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). Matt Damon is also a standout as General Groves, the director of Manhattan Project. Rami Malek leaves a mark even in a cameo. The rest of the cast is also first rate.
Oppenheimer may not match the level of Nolan's Inception (2010) or Interstellar (2014) but is way above the ordinary Hollywood stuff being served these days. Don't miss it in theatres!!

The key to a kill!!
Mission Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One review :
The core focus of the latest Mission Impossible movie is a key. Yea, you heard it right, a key!! I think the last time a key played such a pivotal role in a Hollywood film was Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder (1954). Of course, this ain't a key to a house where a murder is planned but a mean to unlock an AI generated software called 'The Entity', which can create a global havoc.
The Mission impossible franchise is all about Tom Cruise and the guy continues to amaze us with some amazing stunts this time as well. From the elaborate car chase in Italy to the climactic train mayhem, Cruise is first rate. Hayley Atwell impresses a ton as the grey shaded Grace, who turns effortlessly from an expert thief to an Ethan ally.
The new Mission Impossible is certainly worth your ticket price, especially if you have followed the franchise since its inception in 1996 when Tom Cruise became Ethan Hunt. Go and enjoy it pronto at your nearest cinema.

Blind (2023)

Blind review :
Another week in Bollywood with yet another senseless remake; Blind is adapted from a South Korean thriller and premiered directly on JioCinema this friday. Wise call by the makers I would say, as this movie wouldn't have lasted one day in theatres. No kidding!!
A serial killer (Purab Kohli) is on the loose and only one blind (ex) cop (Sonam Kapoor) has interacted with him once. How this lady manages to nab the dangerous criminal forms the crux of this lethargic and yawn inducing screenplay.
Sonam Kapoor as the main lead, is a disaster yet again proving her supremely untalented acting skills. This movie needed a Vidya Balan, boss!! Purab Kohli fails to scare in a negative role of the psychopath doctor. Vinay Pathak is just about okey dokey as the investigating cop.
Most of the film's dialogues are in English and the few Hindi ones suck big time. The foreign locales add zero value to the plot and I wonder why the movie couldn't be based in our own swadesh!!
Unsolicited suggestion: Act blind as well as deaf if anyone recommends you this tripe. You will do yourself a big favour!!

A must watch!!
Baipan Bhaari Deva (Marathi film) review :
Six sisters, all different attitudes and on not too good terms, decide to team up to participate in a 'Mangalagaur' dance competition. The practice sessions help them bond with each other and resolve not just their internal grudges but also fix some personal issues on the domestic front.
The latest Marathi blockbuster aptly titled Baipan Bhaari Deva (Being Woman is difficult) is a perfect nod to womenhood, highlighting their personal issues in a humourous way as well as offering a solution of personal bonding with kith and kin. Yea, no bra burning or lesbian-giri here like what Bollywood invariably mistakes for girl power cinema!!! These are the kinda movies they should make really...
Anyway, kudos to Kedar Shinde and his entire girl gang, who have delivered a highly entertaining fare, particularly to all the 'ladies bayka' patronizing the theatres in hordes. The almost full morning show at INOX Nakshatra mall, Dadar was dominated by women with only three men (including yours truly) amongst them. The claps and cheers were led by the ladies and the grand dance finale got a standing ovation. Now that's what I call entertainment!!

Kangana Ranaut's maiden production had a direct OTT premiere on Amazon Prime this weekend. Going by the title, if you get a Tanu Weds Manu (2015) kinda vibe, banish the thought!! Tiku Weds Sheru is easily one of the worst movies of this year. Its so weirdly bad that I wonder what made Kangana pump her money in to this tripe. The climax, involving Nawazuddin in a drag, is the most hideous scene I have seen after long...
Tiku or Tasleem (Avneet Kaur), a small town girl with Bollywood dreams, agrees to marry the much older Sheru or Shiraz (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) just to migrate to Mumbai. Next, she goes preggers from her boyfriend, who promptly ditches her. Sheru is actually a junior artist moonlighting as a pimp. He falls for wifey Tiku and tries to turn a new leaf. But, will it be so easy peasy?!!
The basic plot might have aroused your interest but its the execution here, which truly sucks!! Nawaz is a good actor but even he cannot salvage the illogical proceedings. Avneet Kaur makes a confident debut in a bad bad movie. She looks pretty, performs efficiently but Tiku Sheru won't do her any good. Sorry!!

I Love You (2023)
Rakul Preet shines in a wannabe Darr.
I Love You review :
In between the Adipurush brouhaha, I Love You had a quiet OTT premiere on JioCinema last weekend. Reminding you of Yash Chopra's infinitely superior Darr (1993), the film deals with a psycho stalker (Pavail Gulati) who holds his office colleague (Rakul Preet Singh) hostage in their locked office premises during the Diwali holiday. How the lady escapes this forced captivity forms the major part of this one hour thirty minutes movie.
While the built-up until the stalker makes his intention clear arouses interest, the last hour appears quite stretched and monotonous. Unnecessary heads are hammered and bloodshed occurs every now and then!! The iconic Darr is referenced at one point but sorry, Pavail Gulati ain't a Shahrukh Khan. Akshay Oberoi is completely shortchanged as Rakul's love interest.
I Love You remains watchable only for Rakul Preet Singh, who proves she's not just a pretty face but also a highly competent actress who can shoulder a film on her own. Don't miss it if you are her fan!!

Adipurush (2023)
Not Ramayan, this is sasta avengers, at best!!
Adipurush review :
Lord Ram in a perennial angry mode;
Sita Mata lacking purity and innocence;
Lord Hanuman indulging in Bombaiyya slang;
The mighty Raavan without a crown or throne hammering away like an iron-smith in one scene;
A bare chested Indrajeet with a tattoed body appearing a criss cross between Marvel's Quicksilver and DC's Flash.
Guys, is this a joke?
Is it a spoof?
Is it even a film?
Whatever it is, Adipurush is NOT Ramayana. It just can't be.
Making a blatant mockery of the great religious epic, this film showcases the worst side of today's Bollywood, which has become creatively bankrupt in recent times.
I had loved Om Raut's Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020) and naturally, was eagerly awaiting his interpretation of Ramayan. But Adipurush was a painful watch. It truly saddens and pains you to view the substandard execution on all aspects from VFX to dialogues to those jarring animated demons jumping on your face in 3D. The dark colour pallette given to the supposedly glittering 'Sone Ki Lanka' makes you wonder if this Raavan is inhabiting some other universe here. Asgard, probably!!
The only saving grace (if you can call it that) is Ajay Atul's scintillating score with 'Jai Shri Ram' chants elevating the proceedings to a reasonable extent.
Prabhas, a brilliant actor no doubt, reprises his Bahubali act while playing Lord Ram. The serene and calm composure associated with the God is missing. Not his fault, the script offers no scope. Kriti Sanon is beautiful but lacks the purity and sanctity of Mata Sita. You can say Saif has performed well if his character was Alauddin Khilji and not Raavan. Devdatta Nage, another fantastic actor, is made to play Lord Hanuman mouthing lines like 'Tere baap ki..'. Oh please!! Sunny Singh is turned in to an extra as Laxman. And pray, what was the need to show Vibhishan's wife (Trupti Toradmal) with all that cleavage sheavage? Who even thought of this scene, man!!
I can go on ranting but honestly, that will be an exercise in futility. Bollywood ka 'funda' is crystal clear, nowadays. Just rake in the moolah within the first weekend and then sell the movie on OTT to garner the profits and move on. Creativity or aesthetics be damned!!
Adipurush may become a box office hit if I go by the 'Housefull' crowd at Citylight Cinema, Matunga where I saw it last evening. But does that really matter?!! Ramanand Sagar's TV series Ramayan (1987) is still remembered and revered after three decades. Adipurush will be forgotten by next friday. Or is it already??!!!

Mumbaikar (2023)
Yet another average remake!!
Mumbaikar review :
Premiering this weekend on JioCinema, Mumbaikar is another South remake attempted by Bollywood. This time, they have picked up Lokesh Kanagaraj's far superior Maanagaram (2017) and made an average Hindi movie out of it. Quite unnecessary I would say, as the original Hindi dub of the Tamil hit is available online!!
Anyway, Mumbaikar marks the Bollywood debut of Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi and it's kinda sad he has chosen this launch which offers him no scope at all. In fact, his character is so underdeveloped that you just can't connect with it. Vikrant Massey is another wasted talent here and you sincerely wish this gentleman chooses better projects... for his own good!! The pretty Tanya Maniktala is the proverbial heroine but trust me, she was much better off in A Suitable Boy (2020).
The plot, revolving around a kidnapping gone wrong, which impacts some dozen odd characters ranging from underworld to a BPO (outsourcing) office, is something up Kanagaraj's sleeve. Director Santosh Sivan falters badly with its Hindi remake, which is a bit surprising looking at his rich experience.
Watch Mumbaikar only if you have nothing else to do this weekend.

Fast X (2023)
Critic proof but worth a watch!!
Fast X review :
First things first. The Fast and Furious franchise is critics-proof as its strong fan base would anyway watch it without bothering about a review. Quite like a Salman Khan film of Bollywood! So, digging deep in to its 'intolerance' towards logic or physics would only be an exercise in futility!!
This time, the focus is on family apart from the regular car chases. Trust me, you will hear the word 'family' at least ten times during its two hours of runtime. Vin Diesel has certainly come a long way from part one of this series, which always manages to up the ante on the action front with every sequel. The action sequences are truly awesome with the plot cleverly woven in to an emotional bond between Diesel and his kiddo. Jason Momoa as the main antagonist, is fantastic.
As an icing on the cake, there is a wonderful Paul Walker tribute and a surprise package in the end credits which indicates a further sequel. Bring it on. Fast!!
