Plans for major extension of Cavan secondary school given green light

Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (ETB) bosses have been given the green light to undertake a large-scale extension of Coláiste Dún and Rí in Kingscourt.

A secondary school in Cavan has been approved plans to undertake a major extension of its campus in Kingscourt.

Plans to carry out those plans at Colaiste Dun an Rí had been lodged with Cavan County Council in May in order to allow the school cater for up to 1,000 students.

Its’s anticipated the development will span across two to four storeys and provide a connection via a new link bridge to the existing school’s first floor.

The proposals, which are earmarked across a seven acre site, received the green light from local authority planning bosses subject to 25 conditions.

In a traffic and transport assessment report, Dublin based consultancy firm ORS, reveal how the proposed extension will see 23 new classrooms being incorporated together with a Special Educational Needs (SEN) base classroom alongside a plethora of supplementary educational facilities.

“Additionally, the extension will house facilities such as a multimedia room, a DCG (Design and Communication Graphics) room, science labs, preparation areas, a home economics room, an art room, a construction studies room, an engineering room and a tech prep room.

A number of other “essential amenities” like project storage facilities, a staff room, and a GP/dining room to support the “overall functioning of the school”, are also included.

Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (ETB) officials have similarly provided for a series of recreational and associated siteworks including an additional ballcourt, student outdoor areas as well as car parking and bicycle parking provisions.
