Ahead of what would’ve been John F. Kennedy’s 100th birthday, his daughter and grandchildren participated in a video message that honors the legacy and values of the former president.
“He is a historical figure,” Caroline Kennedy told CNN. “One hundred years is a really long time, but I think his legacy and these values are timeless and they live on.”
Caroline, who was left as JFK’s only living child after the 1999 plane crash that claimed John F. Kennedy Jr., reminisces in the video about sailing with her father and hiding under his Oval Office desk as a little girl.
“I miss him every day of my life,” she said. “But, growing up without him was made easier thanks to all of the people who kept him in their hearts.”
JFK’s grandchildren also had warm and inspiring messages regarding their grandfather, nothing that Americans can continue to honor his legacy by pursuing justice and equality both in the United States and abroad.
“My generation will inherit a complicated world, with countless, unsolved problems. Climate change is just one of them,” Jack Kennedy Schlossberg said, adding that climate change is the type of challenge JFK would have been energized about “and he could have solved.”
JFK, the 35th president, would have turned 100 this Monday. Instead, he was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963 by a sniper during a visit to Dallas.
