Introduction: DIY Tools Crate | Wood Working and Just a Fun Project

In this project I just wanted to have a little fun with a Walmart wood crate. For some time now I had my tool slaying around everywhere so I decided it's time for them to have a "home" so here it is. I hope you enjoy it!

Things you will need:

  • Wood Crate
  • 60 grit sand paper
  • Paper stencil of your choice
  • Razor blade
  • Punch tools
  • Hammer
  • Torch or a heat gun
  • Wood stain
  • Tung Oil

Step 1: Sanding Rough Edges

First of all I needed to sand the rough edges on that crate, with a 60 grit paper, just to make it look a little cleaner.

Step 2: Paper Stencil

I just printed out what I wanted to write on my crate and taped it to the box. P.S. "DIY Tools" in 150 point font.

Then I took a razor blade and cut hard through the paper to retrace my design to the wood. It's a very soft wood so the whole thing was easy to do.

Step 3: Punch Tools

At first I was going to carve out the words but then saw that my carving tool very all dull from another project ( carving a jack rabbit on my 22LR rifle stock) So I decided to go with a cheep solution of just punching the design in. I used punch tools I had laying around but I could have use just about anything, like: nails, screwdriver, knife, or anything small enough in diameter for the job. Took me about 5-7 min to do.

Step 4: Distress by Fire!

I was too lazy to go to the store and get a propane torch so I just used a heat gun at a 1100 F to give that crate a little bit of a distressed look. Just for fun. Time spent about 20-25 min.

Step 5: Wood Stain

As you can see I used a wood stain to get rid of the lame white color of that crate. I like to see a deeper and richer colors and have a deeper wood grain popping out. I think it worked out pretty well, but that's not all! Hold on and see the last step...

Step 6: Tung Oil Finish

This finish I found on amazon and decided to give it a try. From what I understand it will protect the wood and "seal" it from water damage and just handling. I have never used it before, so time will tell if it works. On the box it says to put 2 coats of oil with 24 hours in between.
