Introduction: Wood State Maps

About: I love playing in the woodshop, I'm a bee keeper.

Step 1: Start With a Real Map

I started with a laminated map. Then cut out state shape.

Step 2: Cutting the Board

First you measure the map at the widest part. You have to pick out the with of board you want. I used 1x6 and 1x10. Then you know on map where to measure.

Step 3: Stencil the Map

Once you lay out the boards in the order you cut them lay your map on them and draw the shape of the map onto your boards.

Step 4: Cutting the Shape

Then you take the jigsaw out and start cutting the shape. I use a 10 teeth per inch reverse cut blade. Here's what I learned after the first one. It's easier to cut the bigger parts off , then cut out to the lines. I then used a random orbit sander to sand it down. I started with a 60 grit on the sides that I cut. Then a120 grit.

Step 5: Stain

You pick out your stain color. I went with a darker one.

Step 6: Hangers

I measured down 1 1/4 inches from top center. Then placed d rings down 3 inches. I split the difference from center to the edge. And used a braided wire from the d rings.
And that's all there is to it. It's simple and easy. Give it a try. You can see other things I make at Todd's S. O. D. Woodworking on Facebook
