History of the stadium

Chase Stadium has been the home ground for Inter Miami since the Major League Soccer expansion side’s inaugural season. But construction is still ongoing on Miami Freedom Park.

Delays to the construction of Miami Freedom Park have forced Inter Miami to play at Chase Stadium for longer than first intended. It was initially hoped that the Herons would move to their permanent ground for the 2021 season. Yet the switch is now not expected until 2025.

Building works only started on the $1bn Miami Freedom Park complex in August 2023. The stadium will offer Inter Miami a 25,000-capacity home ground. But it will also feature a 58-acre public park with soccer and youth athletic fields. They will also build a 750-room hotel.

Chase Stadium is Inter Miami’s temporary home ground

The Herons are funding the creation of Miami Freedom Park through 100% private backing from Inter Miami’s owners. Vice City also expect the ground to generate more than $40m in yearly tax revenue. It will also create 15,000 direct and indirect jobs once construction ends.

In the meantime, Inter Miami continue to call Chase Stadium their home ground. It takes its current name due to a sponsorship deal with JPMorgan Chase after the investment banking company replaced AutoNation as the naming rights sponsor ahead of the 2024 MLS season.

The 34-acre complex originally took the name of Inter Miami CF Stadium when it opened in 2020. It became DRV PNK Stadium in 2021 and acts as Inter Miami’s training center. It even serves as the home of the club’s operations from Inter Miami’s academy to their first-team.

JPMorgan Chase signed a two-year deal to secure the naming rights for Inter Miami’s home stadium in February 2024 when AutoNation’s contract expired. It was even the US financial service giant’s first soccer stadium naming rights deal but joined wider sports sponsorships.

Inter Miami initially only planned on using Chase Stadium for their first campaign as an MLS expansion club in 2020. Yet delays in the construction of Miami Freedom Park and the City of Miami Commission only voting to approve the site on April 28, 2022 extended its life span.

MLS commissioner Don Garber agreed to grant Inter Miami an expansion slot in 2018 as the club planned to build a permanent stadium, too. He was hesitant to permit Vice City’s entry without their own ground. But the addition of Jorge and Jose Mas helped to secure the slot.

Plans then began to develop in 2019 to buy the former home ground of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Lockhart Stadium had fallen into a state of disrepair following the North American Soccer League’s decision to move out. Inter Miami earned city council approval that March.

The City of Fort Lauderdale gave Inter Miami authorization in July 2019 to demolish Lockhart Stadium. The city also retained ownership of the site with Vice City agreeing a 50-year lease. Inter Miami also covered the $60m costs for building the new stadium and training complex.

Chase Stadium officially opened one year later in July 2020 when Fort Lauderdale CF – now Inter Miami II – lost 2-0 to Greenville Triumph SC. Inter Miami played their first match at their stadium in August 2020 when Vice City beat rivals Orlando City 3-2 in Major League Soccer.
