Throughout Unsolved Mysteries‘ long run on TV, one host stood out: Robert Stack. The late actor, sportsman, and television host served as the face (and voice!) behind the true crime show from 1987 to 2002. It began its run on NBC as a series of specials before turning into a full-fledged series on CBS for ten seasons. After its 1999 cancellation, it returned to Lifetime with an addition 103 episodes before Robert’s passing in 2003.

But, even though the show hasn’t produced new episodes years, it still airs in syndication. So, naturally, people are curious about Robert’s career and life because viewers are continually learning about the true crime mysteries years after they initially aired.

However, if you’re watching Unsolved Mysteries in 2018 — there’s a good chance you will watch a host that isn’t Robert as well. The late Raymond Burr and Karl Malden presented the show alongside Robert in 1987. Later, actress Virginia Madsen served as a co-host for a short stint in 1999. While the late Dennis Farina hosted the revived series on the since-renamed Spike (Paramount) Network. Lifetime consistently airs his episodes in reruns for fans.

Most of the former hosts have passed away or moved onto other projects, but does that mean new episodes of Unsolved Mysteries aren’t in the future? Not necessarily. “We are actively talking to a couple of broadcasters who have shown interest, and we’re very optimistic that we’ll have something by way of new episodes by the end of the year,” creator John Cosgrove said in a statement to Decider last year. “It’s too early to go into much detail, but we’ve had our research producers look into possible stories and they’ve found some excellent ones which can be ready to go quickly.”
