Standout Australian industry and government projects and solutions using the Internet of Things (IoT) were recognised as winners of the 2024 IoT Awards in Sydney this evening.

The awards, the official awards of Australia’s peak industry body for IoT, IoT Alliance Australia, provided a snapshot of how IoT is being used to advance management of Australian energy and water networks, increase operational efficiency in multiple industries, modernise government services and many other uses.

The awards were sponsored by Bosch, IoT Skills Australia, Optus, Jacobs, Telstra and xDNA.

There were judged by a panel of judges from across Australian industry and academia. The judges assessed how entrants had used IoT to achieve impact, such as reducing costs, improving productivity and building community trust, and how they had innovated using IoT.

Winners developed IoT systems to increase safety at level crossings, to protect lobster farms from water borne diseases and pollution, to help large organisations reduce water wastage and much more.

The awards were presented at the end of the 2024 IoT Impact conference.

The 2024 IoT Awards Winners

  • Asset Management Award
A system to monitor Melbourne’s tram network, developed by remote monitoring company Kallipr, Yarra Trams and tram operating company Keolis Downer, tackled the problem of debris blocking switch points in the rails.

  • Industrial Automation Award
PGH Bricks & Pavers, in partnership with Bosch Australia Manufacturing Solutions, developed an IoT vision-based quality control system to accurately measure and quantify the colour consistency of bricks in factory production.

  • Logistics & Supply Chain Management Award
Refrigerated truck hire company Scully RSV’s ScullyLive customer portal, built on Inauro’s Perspio platform, helps customers manage maintenance schedule compliance, asset availability and stocktakes and monitor refrigeration temperatures.

  • Data for Net Zero Award, sponsored by xDNA
The City of Perth publishes live data from its solar photo voltaic sites to inform the public and increase public support for net zero projects.

  • Energy Management Award
With its MyEnergy Marketplace, Wattwatchers has created a living lab providing real-time, highly granular energy usage data from 5,000 premises for clean energy research and innovation.

  • Smart Sensing Award, Sponsored by Telstra
SAPHI’s Shellshock is a dynamic visual sensing technology for local government and transport bodies that replaces multiple devices with a single edge computing sensor.

  • Remote Monitoring Award, sponsored by Jacobs
SA Water is using IoT devices to send telemetry to a cloud platform to analyse and visualise data about its pipe network and its cathodic protection system.

  • Digital Twin Innovation Award, sponsored by Bosch
Digital Twinning Australia created CCEmission360, a digital twin solution to resolve CapEx-OpEx-emissions impact trade-off and automate statutory emission reporting for a multinational client.

  • Research Award, sponsored by Optus
The NSW Smart Sensing Network and NSW Department of Environment are helping local governments use low-cost air quality sensors and establish best practices for air quality monitoring through their OPENAIR project.

  • Safety & Wellbeing Award
Transport for NSW worked with multiple organisations for its smarter, safer level crossing technology trial. It uses radar-activated LED stop and advance warning signs at three passive railway level crossings in regional NSW.

  • Trusted IoT Service Award
The Transport for NSW and Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s Digital Trust for Places and Routines project in Sydney Olympic Park aimed to increase transparency and accountability of digital technology in public places.

  • Environmental Monitoring Award
The University of Technology Sydney developed and deployed real-time seawater and arsenic removal monitoring systems in Vietnam to safeguard aquaculture, particularly lobster farming, against diseases and adverse water quality conditions.

  • Data Smart Transformation Award, sponsored by IoT Skills Australia
WaterGroup's Active Water Analysis Risk and Efficiency service added human assistance to real-time water usage metering and cloud-based data analytics to help large organisations achieve significant water usage reductions.

Congratulations to all 2024 IoT Awards finalists and thank you to all entrants for sharing their achievements with the judges.
