The post of Lab Assistant is common at Central Government and State Governments owned universities, degree colleges, autonomous colleges, other educational institutions, research institutions of various ministries and departments, higher technical institutions, agriculture research institutions, etc. within the country. The appointment on Lab Assistant post is done as Group ‘D’ personnel. Wherever a Lab Assistant is posted his duty is to help students in the laboratory of the concerned subject, handling and maintenance of the laboratory equipments, keeping records of the lab equipments and other related materials, etc.

Lab Assistant assists the Professor/Lecturer/Teacher and students for their works in the laboratory of the subject concerned, keeping all equipments ready and in working condition, always availability of the laboratory materials and informing seniors or sourcing in case of unavailability.

Major skills required to become a Lab Assistant include knowledge of various scientific instruments in the laboratory and their maintenance, adequate knowledge of laboratory practices and must have enough patience to handle work under pressure.

Eligibility Conditions for Lab Assistant

To become a Lab Assistant a candidate needs to have qualified senior secondary (12th) with Science stream or the related subject from a recognized board or university. Candidates having following skills are given preference in the selection process-

  1. Work experience in any college or university laboratory as an assistant.
  2. Adequate knowledge of scientific instruments in the laboratory and their maintenance.

Age Limit for Lab Assistant

To become a Lab Assistant a candidate’s age must fall into the range of 18 years to 25 years. However, the upper age limit could be 27 or 30 years at some of the institutions. The reserved category (SC / ST / OBC / PWD/ ExSM) candidates get relaxation in upper age limit according to the rules laid down by the Government.

Selection Process for Lab Assistant

The selection of candidates for Lab Assistant posts is done on the basis of their performance in the Academic Records, Written Exam, efficiency in handling lab work in related laboratory and Personal Interview. However, the recruiting institutions may select the candidates on the basis of lab test and personal interview if not received sufficient number of applications.

Salary Structure of Lab Assistant

For the post of Lab Assistant, initially, a salary is given according to the Pay Band - 1, i.e. Rs. 5,200 – 20,200/- of the Sixth Pay Commission. Salary could be according to the Seventh Pay Commission wherever it has been implemented. Apart from this, various allowances (DA, HRA, etc.) are also given.
