In brief: Smooth, comfortable, very black ink.
In depth: I ordered the Clena as part of a large order of a bunch of different
pens, as I wasn't sure what I liked. The Pentel EnerGel is a very popular gel
pen, so even though I personally wasn't too excited about it, I ordered it. I
chose the Classical Pink Clena body because, well, pink, but after I placed the
order, I was filled with regret about the body because it looked so, so thick in
the picture, and I personally don't enjoy the feeling of super thick pen bodies.
Well, I was very, very wrong, because of the 13 pens I ordered, the Clena has,
by far, the most comfortable body. The grip isn't squishy, just a thin layer of
silicone or rubber over plastic, but the whole pen feels just so, so good in my
hand. It's light, so it doesn't have that luxurious, heavy feel you get with
more expensive pens, but there's something about the design of the body and the
grip that, again, feels so good. I love using it so much that I will create
reasons to write with it.
The ink was also a pleasant surprise. Because the EnerGel uses a needle point, I
expected this pen to write fine, light lines, but goodness, the ink is so dark,
it rivals the Zebra Sarasa R (also in 0.5mm). While the Sarasa R has a blue hue
to its black ink, the EnerGel has a more neutral tone. The tip glides across
paper smoothly --- probably the smoothest of all the pens I bought --- with zero
skipping. I haven't noticed much if any feathering, but it is noticeably broader
than my other 0.5mm pens. Given how dark the ink is and how smooth it writes, I
wish I had gotten it in a finer size, such as the 0.4mm, but I really have no
regrets at all, and this was the pen I was the most unsure about.
Also, I would say that the photos of the pen on JetPens are bit misleading in
regards to the color of the pen's body: in reality the pink stripes at the top
are lighter, unquestionably "pink" rather than "light red" as the pictures make
it appear. Very much a warm, midtone pink, while the body itself is a soft ivory
color rather than a stark white (which I think suits the overall aesthetic very
well). I personally wish Pental hadn't chosen brown as the accent color, but
it's fine. It's a soft, desaturated light brown, with a cool undertone and used
sparingly. The metal of the clip is somewhat interesting, as it seems to have an
extremely subtle pink sheen to it, which is also seen on the button(?) to
retract the pen.
A pure delight, this pen, and I plan to order another in 0.4mm, as well as
plenty of refills. I will continue using this pen a lot.
