Hi! My name is XXXXX XXXXX I would be happy to help with your interesting pieces of Meakin china.
These were produced by Alfred Meakin to mark the occasion of an historic opening up of a direct shipping route between England and the port of Churchill in Hudson Bay, Canada, exactly eighty two years ago this September.
The first cargo ship to enter Churchill, Manitoba, was the British freighter "Farnworth" of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, owned by the Dalgleish Line. It docked on Sept 10 1931 and loaded a cargo of Manitoba wheat before continuing to Montreal.
It was also carrying a consignment of Staffordshire china made by Alfred Meakin marked to commemorate the inaugural trade route between Liverpool and Churchill via this northwest passage and Hudson Bay.
Here's an illustration on one of the souvenir pieces showing the route taken.
If you would very kindly tell me exactly what the set consists of I'll give you a value.
Many thanks and wait to hear.
Best wishes.
Robert
Thanks for your reply. Did the photo I sent come thru to you? I have 4 dinner plates, 7 luncheon plates, 4 soup bowls, 5 saucers, 1 cup, gravy boat, cream and sugar, 1 oval serving bowl, and 5 fruit nappies.
Yes, thanks, XXXXX XXXXX came through just fine,
which shows the pattern really well.
Thanks for the inventory.
Having done some research on past sales (and there are not that many) the premium attributable to the historic significance of the set does not seem to be that high. In other words, even though you may have one of the few sets of this commemorative Alfred Meakin china left on the planet (!), this particular example of vintage Canadiana is sadly unappreciated by collectors. So most of the value is in the regular secondary market price range for this pattern, age and maker.
These are the value ranges to expect if you were to sell at your local antiques auction house.
4 dinner plates................ 40 - 60 (for all)
7 luncheon plates............36 - 54
4 soup bowls....................32 - 48
1 cup & saucer.................10 - 15
4 saucers.........................12 - 16
gravy boat.........................16 - 24
creamer and sugar............18 - 27
1 oval serving bowl............10 - 15
5 fruit nappies...................26 - 39
Total....................circa $200 - $300 for the set.
(It therefore has a replacement value for insurance purposes of $600)
You would do a little better selling it piece by piece on line on sites such as Etsy, eBay and Amazon, etc. In which case I would add about 30% - 50% to value ranges listed above.
I do hope this helps!
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance with this, I would be glad to
Best wishes,
Robert
