Veterinarian's Assistant chatimg
Customer: Hello, my cat has been having a weird skin rash/bumps on her head and around her ears. She’s been itching her head and ears a lot, and when you look at her head it almost looks like she has dandruff because you can see little pieces of what looks like skin. Her hair is now starting to come out in tufts, it almost looks like it’s coming out directly by the root because you can see skin attached to the bottom of the tuft. Her hair loss is only from her head though at this time.
Veterinarian's Assistant: Hi there. I'll do all I can to help. When did you first notice the dandruff? Has the cat been licking or rubbing the skin?
Customer: It’s been going on for about 2 weeks or so now. Yes she has always been a cat that grooms a lot but she is doing it a lot more recently.
Veterinarian's Assistant: What's the cat's name and age?
Customer: Her name is***** don’t know her age for sure, probably at least 3 or 4
Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: She has been sleeping a lot more than normal, and over the past week or so she hasn’t been eating a lot. She’s lost a bit of weight. We have to feed her wet food (she’s normally a dry food cat) and even then she’s not eating much. She also has been hiding under the bed and yesterday she even peed down there, she’s normally pretty good at using the litter box

You can see the little chunks of skin, almost like it’s the root of the hair

Is Louise very itchy? Is she on any medications?

Customer
Thank you so much. She currently is not taking any medications. She is very itchy. She seems particularly itchy on her head and her ear areas

Can you send a photo of her?

Customer
Sure! Do you want to see her head/problem spot specifically?
Customer
We just moved to California from Oregon in October. When we lived in Oregon she was indoor/outdoor, but now she is fully indoor
Customer
This is her right now
Customer
This is the top of her head, you can see where she is losing hair and where it almost looks like dandruff

I suspect an allergy.

You can start 1/2 10mg Claritin once daily and I like Welactin fatty acid supplement for pets. I would also get some Revolution or Comfortis flea med from a Vet.

Customer
Okay. We just did a flea treatment on her earlier this month. Should we wait?
Customer
Is there anything topically we can put on her head/ear to help?

What kind of flea medication?

Customer
It was just the kind where you put it on their neck. I think it was frontline brand
Customer
There is also a spot on her foot that she’s losing a lot of hair too

Have you developed any skin lesions?

Ideally, want fungal culture and skin cytology to rule out ringworm.  But the above is a good start.

Customer
No, no one in my house has. We have another cat too and he doesn’t have any issues either
Ok that would be more supportive of allergies.
Customer
Okay, thank you. So giving her the medicine, is there anything else we should do?
I would start Revolution 30 days after the flea med you just applied.
Customer
Okay, anything else?
Not that I can think of.
