My dog's eye is swollen and red and has been for the last several days (we first noticed it on Saturday morning). I thought that she had hit it on something or possibly had something in it so we've been irrigating it with sterilized saline solution several times a day as well as giving her some ibuprofen for the swelling. But unfortunately even though most of the redness is gone the swelling won't go down and it actually looks worse today than it has so far. I just moved and don't have a vet here yet, plus I don't have the money to pay one right now, so I was hoping that someone could look at the pics and tell me if I can continue to treat it myself or if I'll have to take her into a vet for it?? Not sure how to attach pics to this but do have some that I just took a few minutes ago so let me know how to get them to you and I will. Thanks, Steve

Hi there, The Ibuprofen needs to be stopped it is not good for dogs. I am not sure how you send the pictures. I know it can be done. Do you have a little tool bar that shows a paperclip? I think you hit that then can pull up your pictures. In case this is an allergy you can try Benadryl to get the swelling down. The dose is 1 mg per pound of body weight three times a day. Sometimes you can buy Terramycin Ophthalmic ointment with out a prescription at a Pet tore. If so use that 4 times a day in the eye.

You know the pictures look more like Horner's Syndrome. I will send you a link on that and see what you think.

I just read about Horner's Syndrome on www.peteducation.com and that might be it, because she has a nasty fall goin up the stairs at home last week, maybe Wed or Thurs??. She tried to go up the stairs fast and missed a stair right as she started so she went face first into the staircase. There was no signs of swelling, bruising or injury that we could see at the time but when we first noticed her eye swollen on Saturday I wondered if the fall had anything to do with it?? How do I treat this for her??
I looked closely at your pictures and they are very helpful. We do not have the cardinal signs of Horner's Syndrome which are that that pupil would be smaller and the upper eyelid would droop and the eye ball would seem to be back further in the head with the third eyelid protruding. What I see is just Chemosis of the the conjunctiva. The cornea looks OK and the sclera is also edematous.

I would try the Benadryl for a few days and see if that takes the chemosis (edema of the tissues around the eye) down and see if that helps. I think that your saline flushes are a god idea too. You might also try visine for red eyes and see if that helps.
