Customer: Dog has these blood blister like lesions on stomach. They have been there for several months - I’ve shown his vet and they suspected hemangiomas and they weren’t too concerned. I believe one of them has grown slightly so I am getting it looked at again next week. Any thoughts?

Hello, I'm Dr. Galina and I'm happy to help with another opinion on these lesions. These seem to be located on the white, less haired areas and may be melanin deposits (skin pigment). Usually, these are not a concern, however, they may be precursors for melanoma. If the lesions change shape or grow then I would be more concerned about melanoma. It's good that you are getting it looked at again next week and the vet may recommend a biopsy to make sure these are benign. They appear small enough to be done as an outpatient procedure but definitely chat with your vet about this when you see them. I hope this answers your question and if you have any further concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

Good luck!

I was also concerned about dermal Hemangiosarcoma - is this the typical appearance of them? Or would they likely be growing faster?

Hi, in theory it is possible however, you are correct that usually the skin form of hemangiosarcoma grows/spreads quickly and is often irritating. So it appears as a rash and may cause itching.I've included some images but I would recommend a biopsy just so you know for sure what you're dealing with :)

Customer
thank you for the pictures!

Yeah these lesions are a bit more red in color which is why I believe his vet originally assumed hemangioma. I'm going to see if they can maybe do a local and punch biopsy of the larger lesion. Do you tend to see hemangiomas and/or dermal hemangiosarcomas often?

yes a local and punch biopsy should work well. it's more common to have hemangiomas present, especially if the lesions are only in the location of the white hair, so chances are that's what they are but if it was my dog I would want to know for sure!

Customer
definitely!! I appreciate your insight! Thanks so much

you're very welcome! Best of luck!
