Customer: My Westie gave birth about a week ago. Today I noticed that she has a round patch of skin about 3 inches wide on her rear right beside her tail that has no hair. She usually sheds really badly after giving birth but has never had full patches of fur missing.

Does Shasta seem itchy?

Is the area of hair loss scaly or crusty at all?

She's no more itchy than normal. The area is soft and pink, just looks like normal skin without the hair. It doesn't appear to be sensetive since she didn't try to pull away when I was examing it. I know she didn't have it before she had the puppies.

Since it's not scaly, itchy or painful, I think we can write it off to normal post partum hair loss. The fact you said she does normally lose a lot of hair after whelping makes me think this is just an extreme case.

If she were mine, I'd keep an eye on it for a little while and see if it gets bigger or changes appearance. You could use something like a Sharpie marker to trace the outside edge of the patch so that it's easy to tell if it's getting bigger.

If it does, or if it changes, then you should have your vet take a peek at it..just to be on the safe side.
