Culligan water softener model 01023115 How can I tell if my water softener is actually working and just needs to be

Contractor's Assistant chatimg
Customer: Culligan water softener model 01023115How can I tell if my water softener is actually working and just needs to be calibrated, or if it’s not functional at all?I moved into this house 3 years ago and it was already here and installed. The previous owner said it was “oversized” and didn’t use much salt. Well a year later I hadn’t needed to add any salt. I also have lived in a home with a functional water softener and I know what the feel of water on my skin and hair feels like, and this water softener didn’t give me that feeling at all, plus I was still dealing with hard water spots on my shower doors etc. I tried to adjust the settings to have it regenerate more often but I’m not sure if I did it correctly.I ended up just unplugging it because I didn’t want to deal with it. But I’d like to try to get it set up and working properly.

I should add, a year later I didn’t need to add any salt, but the salt level had actually not moved. Not enough to be noticeable anyway.

When playing around with it last year, I had also turned a knob or done something to bypass it and I forget it I put it back or not.

Definitely make sure the bypass valve is not in bypass, and is in operational mode.  Run a regeneration cycle and make sure it goes through a cycle.  Typically will take about 2 hours.  The cycle should be noticeable as it is not that quiet.  It will also drain water through the drain pipe connected to the softener.  Oversizing is actually not bad.  It means it will regenerate automatically on its own less often, using less salt.  I'm guessing it is in bypass mode that your salt level hasn't moved in a year.  It would hurt to grab something fairly clean, something of a rigid pole of some sort to break up the salt inside the salt reservoir to make sure there is no salt bridging going on, so the salt is mixing with the water correctly too.

Customer
Ok thank you. I will check the salt reservoir in the morning.
