Windy with elevated fire danger Thursday ahead of storms this weekend
June-like warmth continues its grip on central Iowa this week as temperatures have soared well into the 80s Wednesday afternoon. We will likely end the day just shy of a record high in Des Moines. Interactive Radar | Weather AlertsGusty winds and low relative humidity are creating a setup ripe for rapidly spreading wildfires across the state. A Red Flag (Fire Weather) Warning is in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday, but these fire weather conditions are expected to linger tomorrow. Residents should avoid any outdoor burning through at least Friday. Highs will range from the lower 80s to upper 80s with mostly sunny skies.A substantial pattern shift in our weather is anticipated Friday night into Saturday as a storm system approaches from the Rocky Mountains. Model guidance has been trending toward a slower and more amped up storm system which will likely help enhance rain chances and allow them to persist much longer on Saturday. Scattered storms will move into western Iowa during the late evening and overnight hours of Friday into Saturday with the most widespread activity occurring on Saturday. An isolated strong to severe storm cannot be ruled out during the day Saturday over our southeastern counties. This will be a much-needed rainfall with total amounts ranging from a 0.25" to locally near 1" closer to thunderstorms. Rain will end late Saturday night into the predawn hours on Sunday as the low pressure with this storm system wraps up to northeast. As colder air moves in on the back end of the system, some snow may mix in parts of Central and Northern Iowa. Prospects for accumulation do not look impressive at this time due to the preceding warming ground temperatures. Clearing skies, windy conditions, and temperatures near average will prevail Sunday into next Monday. Iowa Weather Outlook: Well-above average temperatures and high fire danger through Thursday Showers/storms very late Friday night into Saturday Widespread rain, t-storms, wind on Saturday Falling temperatures Saturday afternoon Near average temperatures and dry early next weekKCCI Weather Forecast:Wednesday Night: Clear.
