NORTH MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) -As the end of the year looms the city of North Mankato is forming their plans for impounding lost or stray dogs.

The city said that their hope is to partner with Mankato’s soon to reopen impound, but an agreement hasn’t been formed.

The city is forming what they hope to be a temporary plan, where they’ll use a small climate-controlled shelter with a capacity of just three dogs.

North Mankato is also partnering with a local vet to provide care for any picked up animals, and city law enforcement said that while their hope is for the facility to be a temporary solution, they are preparing for other possibilities.

”We’re hopeful that we’ll still be able to explore some type of formal option, or this may require the city to look at some kind of permanent shelter in years to come but we’re hopeful that some type of arrangement can be made,” said police chief Ross Gullickson.

The city previously had an impound partnership with BENCHS, but that contract expires at the end of the year.
