Church Steeples

That’s a frequently asked question we get at Kivett’s Fine Church Furnishings. Remember the nursery rhyme you learned with your hands: ‘Here is the church, here is the steeple, open the doors-see all the people!’  Then you’d wiggle your tiny fingers inside your interlocking hands to indicate all those folks inside the church, worshipping together. That’s what the church is: a group of people coming together to fellowship, hear God’s word, and reflect on how it can best guide each of our lives. A church building and its crowning steeple is a heart-warming reminder that God designed us to be together, to worship corporately, and to reap the benefits of sharing our lives with each other.

From early church times, steeples have been a symbol of community gathering, pointing toward heaven to symbolize our goal to get to our eternal home with God. Church steeples served the community as timekeepers with their periodically tolling to let everyone within hearing distance mark the hour and half-hour, and height of the spire was a clear indication that sanctuary and peace were as close as the nearest church- found by looking for the nearest steeple.
