Trying to keep it standing: Owners of the old Loma schoolhouse hope to restore the building
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - For many in the town, the old Loma schoolhouse holds significant memories. After shutting down in the 80’s, it was remodeled into an 8-bedroom home.
When the property went up for sale, it was a no-brainer for one Loma native and her husband. They purchased the Loma building and it now holds a special place in their hearts.
She just couldn’t watch this space go, but it wasn’t long before they ran into some challenges. The foundation was starting to give out and the cracks in the structure were getting worse.
Shirleen Hutton, the owner of the old Loma school, said “Our full intent was to keep it. But now we’re in a dilemma of it’s starting to get worse, and we’re not finding any way to keep it standing.“
They have reached out to different contractors for help, but say it is far too expensive.
Ultimately, Hutton is open to ideas- whether it’s a contractor willing to give them a great deal or community members donating money and/or services to help them refurbish.
