The Turner School District in Kansas City, Kansa, is updating their current COVID-19 back-to-school plan despite lots of teachers and students out sick.
The new plan says "unmasked and unvaccinated individuals who are close contacts to a positive case may quarantine for 10 days.
In lieu of the 10-day quarantine, an individual may quarantine at home for 5 days and return to school with a negative COVID-19 test after 5 days.
Another option would be the individual remaining in school, taking a daily rapid COVID-19 test for 5 days (or every other day, if resources are limited), and wearing a mask for 10 days following the exposure. All tests are administered in school buildings without cost, while supplies last. Quarantine days for students will be excused absences another option would be someone to remain in school, taking a daily rapid covid-19 test for 5 days if testing is available and wearing a mask for 10 days following the exposure."
At tonight’s meeting, two parents had written comments asking the district to close schools because of people out sick and make masks mandatory.
Masks are only strongly recommended in district buildings.
One parent who did speak doesn’t want to see any new mask rules.
"Anything we can do to get our kids into a learning environment that they feel safe in, but at the same time they’re able to be without masks," said Kent Young, Turner parent.
There was no mention from the board on if any schools will be closed.
School board members plan to provide more on the plan to parents Wednesday.
