MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The results are in for the Neville Charter vote that sought stakeholders’ input.

This comes after the Neville Charter Association (NCA), a private nonprofit organization, filed an application to convert Neville High School to a Type 3 charter school on Oct. 25, 2024.

From Dec. 17-18, parents and guardians of students enrolled at Neville High School and certified faculty and staff members were eligible to vote if they wanted to weigh in on the NCA submitting an application to the Monroe City School Board.

On Dec. 19, Jennifer Haneline with the MCSB announced that the board received a total of 144 votes in favor of the change. In a social media post, Haneline said the MCSB “only captures votes in favor, not votes against.” Meaning, there was not an official box for voting against Neville being turned into a charter school.

According to Haneline, on the days the vote was being held, 1,037 students were on the roster. 100 parents voted in favor of the charter application, while 937 parents did not vote in favor of it. Out of 70 certified faculty and staff members, 44 voted in favor, 14 did not vote in favor and one person abstained.

After Haneline posted the results, members of the community took to social media to express their thoughts and ask questions.

“I think the ballot should have been a for/against ballot. Not voting because you are against and not voting because you’re not interested in voting are two different things,” one person wrote.

Another person questioned the change, writing, “Neville is such a great school, why mess with it?”

Haneline addressed some of the community’s concerns.

“... As a board member, I do understand not everybody who might support this voted and not everybody who didn’t vote, doesn’t support it,” Haneline wrote. “This vote is part of the process to help board members make their decision when it comes to our determination.”
