H.E President William Samoei Ruto conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction of Shimoni Port, which is set to become the first fish port in the country.
Speaking on site during the visit, the president directed that the construction of the project must be complete by September 2024.
The President said the facility will help to create job opportunities and spur the economic growth of the country.
“We want to give our fisherfolk the opportunity to benefit through the utilization of our ocean resources" he said.
The flagship project has been funded with a budget of Ksh. 2.6 billion by the Kenya Ports Authority, with the aim of harnessing the potential of the Blue Economy by significantly enhancing fish production, processing, and value addition, both domestically and for the export market.
The port is projected to handle an annual throughput of 50,000 metric tons. The development plans include the construction of a modern jetty measuring 75 meters by 30 meters, along with a causeway that spans 135 meters in length and 7 meters in width. These infrastructure additions will bolster the port's efficiency and capacity.
Moreover, the facility will house a dedicated warehouse that will serve as a fish processing plant. Additionally, it will feature a fish market, cold storage facilities, and an ice-making plant. These amenities are designed to support the entire fish value chain, ensuring that fish can be processed, stored, and transported in optimal conditions.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-next year. Upon completion, Shimoni Port project is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy, creating employment opportunities and driving economic growth in the region.
Furthermore, by promoting fish production and value addition, the port will contribute to the sustainable development of the country's Blue Economy.
Accompanying the president was the Deputy President H.E Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretaries Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen (Roads and Transport), Hon. Salim Mvurya (Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs), Davis Chirchir (Energy), KPA Chairman Hon. Benjamin Tayari and the Managing Director Captain William Ruto among other national leaders.
