Aptos shooting prompts shelter-in-place order
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's office said they received reports of a shooting around 3 p.m. Monday in Aptos in the area of Mar Monte and Highway-1.
A shelter-in-place order went out to residents in the area of White and Larkin Valley roads.
"The victim self-transported themselves to a local hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect did flee the scene and it is believed that the suspect and victim are known to each other," said Ashley Kheen, Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer.
The message sent to residents asked them to be on the lookout for a white Honda Odyssey van with a California license plate number: 6SOV814
Neighbors in the area who received the shelter-in-place notification described the moments they first learned there was a shooter on the loose.
"It was super shocking. I really wasn't expecting anything like that to happen today. We were just like chilling on the couch and all of sudden we got this notification, went outside and there's a ton of stuff going on," said Matt Forbes.
Aiden Aminifird also received the notification.
"I mean, I feel really safe where I live, but it's always nerve-wracking getting something like that and told to stay home," Aminifird said.
Kheen said the shelter-in-place started at 4:07 p.m. and was lifted at 6 p.m.
