Larne Grammar School

Swim Ulster Senior Schools’ Cup and Championships 2022

Congratulations to the 6 swimmers who represented Larne Grammar School at the Swim Ulster Senior Schools’ Cup and Championships 2022 at the Aurora Leisure Centre, Bangor on Saturday 5th February.  During the morning session our junior swimmers swam very competitively recording several personal best times.  In the Girls 12-14 Category, Carrie Loughridge (Year 8) and Phoebe Simpson (Year 9) recorded PBs in both the 100m Backstroke (2.08.06 and 1.31.90 respectively) and the 100m Freestyle (1.38.47 and 1.14.43 respectively).

Year 10 pupils Owen Wasnidge and Oliver Smyth were competing in the Boys 12-14 100m Freestyle.  Oliver swam a PB of 1.07.66 to finish in 17th position and Owen missed out on the final by 0.04secs completing the course in 1.06.35 to finish in 11th place.

The afternoon session began with Anna Campbell (Year 13) recording a time of 4.48.73 in the 400m Freestyle to finish in 10th place.  She went on the swim an impressive 1.02.35 (PB) in the Girls 17-19 100m Freestyle, qualifying for the final where she finished in 6th place.  This was a particularly admirable achievement given the quality of the field.

Charlotte Smyth had a very successful day in the Girls 15-16 Category, competing in the Freestyle, and Butterfly events.  In the 100m Freestyle she recorded a time of 1.07.42 to finish in 17th position.  She completed the 100m Butterfly course in 1.13.58 finishing in a credible 7th place.

Our swimmers should be commended, not only for their outstanding performances at this competition, but for their resilience, determination and commitment to their sport, training up to 5 times per week, both before and after school.  We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our parents, particularly Mrs Simpson, Mr Wasnidge, Mrs Smyth and Mrs Campbell, whose support during the competition and throughout the swimming season has been invaluable.
