Bangar derived its name from the bangar tree which was abundantly growing in the town during the Spanish regime. The municipality is famous for its loom-weaving industry which is highly-praised for its quality and much in demand here and even in abroad. Loom weavers still uses manual traditional weaving techniques passed on from generation to generation using antique weaving equipment to weave their Inabel products.
Visitors can easily reach Bangar, it being a major transit area for the Manila-Ilocos Route. Tricycles are conveniently stationed at the Town Plaza to take visitors anywhere in the municipality to explore the beauty of its barrios.
Bangar is bounded on the north by Balaoan; and on the south by Sudipen. A 3rd class municipality, it is politically subdivided into thirty three (33) barangays, namely:
