Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on June 13, 2018 Like all seasons, the season of fall is marked by profound changes. Autumn winds break the summer heat and provide a pleasant coolness across most of the world. Leaves change their hues in lovely bursts of color, then fall gently to the ground. The sun begins its annual retreat, bringing less and less light to each new day. Consider the following passages from God's Word as you enjoy the blessings of autumn. Because even in a season of great change, the Scriptures remain a firm foundation for life. Psalm 1:1-3 As mentioned above, the falling of the leaves is one of the most anticipated elements of the fall season. But the psalmist reminds us that spiritual lives need not wither and fall when they are connected to a Source of life. 1 How happy is the manwho does not follow the advice of the wickedor take the path of sinnersor join a group of mockers!2 Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.3 He is like a tree planted beside streams of waterthat bears its fruit in seasonand whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.Psalm 1:1-3 Jude 1:12 While the autumn leaves are certainly lovely in a decorative sense, they're also lifeless and unproductive. That made them a helpful metaphor when Jude wrote about the dangers of false teachers within the early church. These are the ones who are like dangerous reefs at your love feasts. They feast with you, nurturing only themselves without fear. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds; trees in late autumn—fruitless, twice dead, pulled out by the roots.Jude 1:12 James 5:7-8 The fall is often a season of waiting -- waiting for winter, waiting for the holidays, waiting for the Super Bowl, and so on. The apostle James captured this theme with a farming metaphor to remind us of the importance of waiting on God's timing. 7 Therefore, brothers, be patient until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and is patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.James 5:7-8 Ephesians 5:8-11 Halloween is one of the more popular events in the fall calendar. And while much of our modern celebrations for this holiday can be fun, there are many who use Halloween as an excuse to revel in the darker elements of spirituality. The apostle Paul helps us see why that's typically a bad idea. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light— 9 for the fruit of the light results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth— 10 discerning what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Don’t participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them.Ephesians 5:8-11 Psalm 136:1-3 Speaking of holidays, Thanksgiving is a major milestone that typically caps off the autumn season. So, join with the psalmist in giving praise and thanks to our glorious God. 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love is eternal.2 Give thanks to the God of gods. His love is eternal.3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords. His love is eternal.Psalm 136:1-3 Cite this Article Format mla apa chicago Your Citation O'Neal, Sam.
