Leeds Bradford Airport has been forced to shut its runway closed amid heavy snowfall across Yorkshire - throwing travel plans for hundreds into chaos.

Earlier this morning, the airport announced the runway would be closed and teams were working hard to clear it so it could reopen. They said they hoped to reopen the runway at midday.

However, at midday they issued another update stating the runway would remain closed until this afternoon at the earliest.

Leeds Bradford Airport said the ongoing heavy snowfall meant the runway would be closed until further notice, and due to the high volume of customers in the departure lounge, they would need to temporarily restrict access through security.

Finally, they said they would issue a further update at 2pm. The statement read: "Due to ongoing heavy snowfall, the runway at Leeds Bradford remains closed until further notice. Our teams are working hard to reopen it as soon as it is safe to do so.

"Customers are advised to contact their airline for the most up-to-date information regarding their flight before travelling to the airport.

"Due to the high volume of customers in the departure lounge, we may need to temporarily restrict access through security, this will be managed in flight priority order. Our operations team will be on hand to assist, please listen out for announcements within the terminal.

"We will provide the next update at 14:00. Thank you to our customers for their ongoing patience and understanding, and to our teams on the ground who are working tirelessly to clear the falling snow and minimise impact on flight schedules."
