Dear Child Ending Explained: Is Jasmine Able to Run Away From Her Captor? What Happens to Perpetrator?

Dear Child Ending Explained: Also known as Liebes Kind, this drama-mystery-crime TV mini-series, based on Romy Hausman’s novel of the same title, is directed by Julian Pörksen and Isabel Kleefeld, produced by Friederich Oetker and Tom Spiess, and stars Kim Riedle, Sammy Schrein, Naila Schuberth, Justus von Dohnányi, Julika Jenkins, Haley Louise Jones and others. The series has 6 episodes, each with a runtime of around 45 minutes.

Dear Child Plot

Lena, Hannah and Jonathan’s life is spent in confinement and isolation – they eat, sleep and go to the toilet at prescribed times, and the moment “he” enters the room, they must line up and show their hands. However, one day, they manage to escape their captivity, and after a horrible car crash, they end up in a hospital.

However, the real story starts there as Lena’s parents arrive to see their child after 13 years, thankful that she is alive. From there starts a dark and horrifying look into a shocking secret of an unsolved disappearance from years ago.

Who is the woman who got into an accident at the beginning?

Jasmine, a woman kept confined in a house by a man, ran from the forest right in front of a car in order to escape her captor. Right before, she incapacitated her captor and fled a remote military bunker but got into the accident right after.

Why did she call herself Lena? Was she Lena?

Jasmine, after months of being confined and told repeatedly that she is Lena, and tortured when complaining, found herself mentally unable to comprehend her new, free surroundings. That’s why, when asked at first, she constantly mentioned that she is Lena. However, soon, realising that she isn’t going to be hurt anymore, she fights against her instincts to reveal her real name.

Who is Lena?

Lena Beck was a woman who was abducted 13 years before the incidents of the present event. No one even found her, but when Jasmine turns up, the police find many things about her story similar to the incident, especially the fact that Jasmine has the same hair, calls herself the same name and has the exact same mark on her palm that Lena had after suffering from an accident years ago.

Who was the perpetrator?

The perpetrator was the owner of the security company who took care of the bunker and thus had unlimited access to it. He came to know Lena through his work – Lena’s parents used his company to install the security system in their house, and he came in contact with Lena when she accidentally locked himself in the house. He started to be fascinated by her because she looked exactly like her mother, who ran away after having her quite young. It was probably not from having his own parents that he abducted her and confined her, in a way to keep her.

Why did he abduct Jasmine?

Lena died after childbirth, and after that, the perp abducted many other women to fill her place. Jasmine was the last one there who was able to get away and not die in the house. He made everyone look like Lena (or, his mother) so that they “would replace” her in every way.

Why did Hannah help her “father”?

As is revealed towards the end, Hannah isn’t the perpetrator’s biological father. However, only the police are aware of that fact. Hannah, who was been raised in captivity and always lived her life in that manner, prefers the routine and the monotony. Also, it is also revealed that she asked him to let her “keep” Jasmine because she was a really good storyteller, just like Lena.

However, personally, I think that she was helping Jasmine the entire time instead of the perpetrator. She gave Jasmine the shard of glass that Jasmine eventually used to save herself, and in the end, she looked like she truly loved her in spite of what she might have let on.
