James B. Hunt Jr. Library

Located on NC State's Centennial Campus, the James B. Hunt Jr. Library is one of NC State’s two main libraries, complementing the D. H. Hill Jr. Library on North Campus.

What's inside the Hunt Library?

When it opened in 2013, the Hunt Library was featured in Time magazine as the Library of the Future. Designed by the world-renowned architectural firm Snøhetta—famous for its design of the Oslo Opera House and the 9/11 Memorial Museum Pavilion—the Hunt Library has won numerous architectural awards, including the AIA/ALA Library Buildings Award, and its interior is furnished with a collection of iconic 20th- and 21st-century furniture and fixtures, earning it an ALA Library Interior Design Award as well.

Requiring one-ninth the space of conventional shelving, the bookBot—our automated collections storage and retrieval system—helps transform this 21st-century library from a place to store books into a rich environment of learning and collaborative spaces. From immersive visualization spaces to large-scale display walls to digital media and gaming labs to music studios, the Hunt Library provides world-class platforms for experiential teaching and learning.

The bookBot will be off from November 1, 2024–January 3, 2025 while we install its new 30-year LED lights.

During this time, you can request materials held by the bookBot through the Catalog in order to receive them via interlibrary loan.

Filled with natural light, it’s also just a really pretty place to meet your friends and colleagues to collaborate or find a quiet place to study on your own. With dozens of reservable spaces, as well as dedicated Faculty and Graduate Student Commons, the Hunt Library is Centennial Campus’ social and academic hub.
