Fast forward to now, I'm rocking the role of an Analyst at Google, delving deep into Data Engineering, Analytics and Reporting. 📊💻 The takeaway? Your journey may not follow the expected route, and that's absolutely okay! Your unique background, even if it doesn't seem to fit the mold, can be your secret weapon. People are often surprised when they ask about my journey into analytics and learn that my background is in pharmacy, with experience in various roles within the pharmaceutical industry’s medical division before I transition into analytics. I guess it’s because it’s a significant shift. How I ended up on this path is a mix of serendipity and intention. I’ll leave that story for another occasion. One of the intriguing things about data analytics is that you don’t necessarily need a data-related degree to land a job in this field. Take me as an example. Through networking, I’ve learned that everyone’s journey to analytics is unique. Many come from diverse backgrounds, such as social sciences, business, engineering, and even humanities. However, entering this field does require much work and acquiring new skills. Despite the varied backgrounds analysts come from, there are four main paths we took to land our first analyst role: 1️⃣ Transitioning from a related role, like finance. 2️⃣ Pursuing a degree or relevant education, such as computer science or data science, can be pricey and time-consuming. It can cost around $40,000 and more with several years of study. I wouldn’t recommend this route if you already have a degree. ROI simply isn’t there IMHO. 3️⃣ Attending a boot camp for an intensive crash course, usually priced between $5,000 to $15,000. 4️⃣ Taking the DIY route like I did—this requires self-discipline and lots and lots of online research. It's cost-effective; I spent under $500 to get my first analyst role. So, if you're considering a career in data analytics, these are the main paths you can take. It's a rapidly evolving field, so be prepared to keep learning—there's always more to discover. P.S. I just wrapped up my Google Advanced Analytics Professional Certificate Program. A career Gap of almost 3 yrs to cracking a role at Google !⭐ This was something beyond my expectations. And yes, the journey of landing a job at a good product company wasn’t easy. I too had my fair share of ghosting & rejections. But, with each failed attempt, I learned something new. Even I have had my share of rejections in my professionals Journey. And as a working professional here’s what I learned from them - ➡️ With my first rejection, I realized that my way of preparing was the issue. Although I began with free resources like Google & YouTube with every resource, I confused myself. ➡️ Later, I realized my mistake and made a structured plan: → I started with foundational concepts like probability distributions, hypothesis testing, and confidence intervals. → Then learned programming languages like Python or R. Earlier, I was focusing on this first. → Then I understood Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA). Lastly, I made sure to master SQL for querying and managing databases since it is the most frequently asked question in interviews. Don’t make the mistake that I made, cause Data Science is a vast field. You need the right plan and consistency to cover everything properly.
