Benefits & Implementation of Remote Monitoring Program in your practice

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is a growing trend in healthcare that allows healthcare providers to remotely monitor the vital signs and medical status of their patients using technology such as wearable devices and smart devices. RPM has proven to be particularly effective in the management of chronic diseases, as it allows healthcare providers to track and respond to changes in a patient's health status in real time, leading to better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients.

In this blog, we will dive deeper into the benefits of RPM, the RPM codes and CPT codes used to bill for these services, and how to implement an RPM program in your practice.

Benefits of Remote Patient Monitoring

There are numerous benefits to using RPM for both healthcare providers and patients. For healthcare providers, RPM can help to reduce the burden of in-person visits, as patients can be monitored remotely, allowing providers to prioritize their time and resources more effectively. It can also help to reduce the risk of hospital readmissions, as providers can identify and address potential issues before they become more serious.

RPM can also improve the efficiency of care delivery, as it allows healthcare providers to remotely monitor multiple patients at once and respond to changes in their health status in a timely manner. This can lead to improved patient outcomes and a higher level of patient satisfaction.

For patients, RPM can improve access to care, as they can be monitored remotely and do not need to visit a healthcare facility as frequently. It can also improve the patient experience, as patients have more control over their care and can be more actively involved in managing their health. RPM can also help to reduce the cost of care, as it can reduce the need for in-person visits and hospitalizations.

RPM is particularly useful in the management of chronic diseases, as it allows healthcare providers to continuously monitor a patient's health status and intervene when necessary. This can help to prevent the progression of the disease and reduce the risk of complications. RPM can also help to improve medication management, as healthcare providers can monitor a patient's response to medications and make adjustments as needed.

RPM Codes and CPT Codes

RPM codes and CPT codes are used to bill for RPM services. RPM codes are used to bill for the remote monitoring of patients with chronic conditions, while CPT codes are used to bill for the provision of RPM services.

RPM codes include:

  • 99453: Remote monitoring of physiologic parameter(s) (e.g., weight, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, respiratory flow rate), initial setup and patient education on use of equipment.
  • 99454: Remote monitoring of physiologic parameter(s) (e.g., weight, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, respiratory flow rate), device(s) supply with daily recording(s) or programmed alert(s) transmission, each 30 days.

CPT codes include:

  • 99091: Collection and interpretation of physiologic data (e.g., ECG, blood pressure, glucose monitoring) digitally stored and/or transmitted by the patient and/or caregiver to the physician or other qualified healthcare professional, qualified by education, training, licensure/regulation (when applicable) requiring a minimum of 30 minutes of time in a calendar month.
  • 99457: Remote physiologic monitoring treatment management services, 20 minutes or more of clinical staff/physician/other qualified healthcare professional time in a calendar month requiring interactive communication with the patient/caregiver during the month.

It's important to note that RPM codes and CPT codes are subject to change, so it's important to stay up to date on the most current codes to ensure that you are billing correctly for RPM services.

Implementing an RPM Program in Your Practice

To implement

an RPM program in your practice, there are several steps you can take:

1.    Identify your target population: Determine which patients would most benefit from RPM, such as those with chronic conditions or those at high risk of hospitalization.

2.    Choose the right technology: Select a device or devices that are appropriate for your patients and that meet the necessary security and privacy standards.

3.    Train your staff: Ensure that your staff is trained on how to use RPM technology and how to interpret and respond to the data collected.

4.    Set up processes for data collection and management: Establish processes for collecting and managing data from RPM devices, including how to record and track changes in a patient's health status.

5.    Communicate with patients directly via your own nurse staff or outsource this communication and onboarding

6.    And finally Monitor and bill for services (same as above)
