Photo of the Week: Blue-headed Vireo Migrating South

Along with warblers migrating south to warmer climates, vireos are also migrating through southeast Michigan.

And the nice thing about vireos, at least compared to warblers in fall plumage: vireos a lot easier for me to identify!

First, there aren’t many different types of vireos in our area.

Second, vireos have a large head, short neck, and bigger bill compared to warblers.

And third, and more important for me: birds like the Blue-headed Vireo look similar in color to what they look like in spring.

I’ve seen many Blue-headed Vireos over the years, but they’ve been so high up in the tree or deep in the shadows, that I’ve rarely been able to get a good photo.

Until this past week!
