Neighbours 'pull pensioner couple to safety' from terrifying fire that destroyed house

Neighbours told how a pensioner couple were pulled to safety from a terrifying blaze that completely destroyed their house.
Firefighters sent four appliances to the bungalow on Grange Lane in Formby at 2.55am earlier today.
No-one is thought to have been injured in the fire.
A nearby neighbour said: “I’ve never seen anything like it, we smelt the smoke and heard the sirens about 3am and came out to see what had happened.“
The next door neighbour said: “We thought it was our house at first, and all ran out and heard the popping and crackling of the fire.
“There was so much smoke and it was really scary, the other neighbours got the couple who live there out, it was terrifying but at least they got out safe.

"We're the first of several thatched properties on the road, so if had caught onto ours and then onto our next door neighbours, it would have been much worse.
“We thought it was going to catch onto our thatch roof but thankfully the fire service managed to get it under control."
A Merseyside fire and rescue statement read: “The entire property - a detached bungalow - was destroyed by the fire.
“There are not thought to be any injuries.
“An investigation into the cause is not yet complete.”
