Weather Alert

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EDT THURSDAY NIGHT The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from midnight tonight to midnight EDT Thursday night. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Fine Particulates. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

The Town of Brookhaven is one of the most populous towns on Long Island.

The Town of Brookhaven is the only town in Suffolk County, New York that stretches from the north to the south shore, with access points to both the Long Island Sound and the Great South Bay.  Nine villages and fifty unincorporated hamlets make up the Long Island Town of Brookhaven.

The first inhabitants of the Town of Brookhaven were the Setauket and Unkechaug tribes.  (The Unkechaug maintain the Poospatuck Reservation on Long Island's North Fork.) English settlers arrived in the area in 1640, and fifteen years later purchased the lands that comprise Brookhaven from the Native Americans living in the area.  The English named their first settlement Setauket, after the Native American people who lived there.  The population of Brookhaven doubled between 1825 and the end of the Civil War.

The 2010 census indicates that the current population is 486, 040.  A 2006 estimate placed the median household income at $73, 566.  A large portion of Fire Island and the Great South Bay are in the town.  Brookhaven National Laboratory, owned by the U.S. Department of Energy, which runs several major programs including nuclear and high-energy physics, neurosciences and environmental research is located in the hamlet of Upton.  The State University of New York at Stony Brook, and the Stony Brook University Medical Center are also located in Brookhaven.
